Nice to see Birchip again, the quaint little town in the Mallee, my ex in-laws lived there until their passing in 2016 & 2021 respectively. Haven't been back since, but I'm sure not much as changed. Anyhow thanks for the video and the memories. 😊🚂

I know this comment is a bit off topic, but just watching this reminded me about the idiotic rail network and tunnel (SRL) that is currently bankrupting Victoria to the tune of 15.5 billion dollars so far with no end in sight. Imagine if they put that money in to creation and upgrade of the states rural rail system.....they could take a ton of trucks off the road which would cut pollution and stop destroying the states roads which are falling apart. And it just makes sense to have a network of lines out from Melbourne to all major rural centres. Freight would move a lot faster. Anyway, sorry for that, enjoyed the video. I hate Melbourne these days but rural Victoria is still a great place with (in general) a better class of people. Cheers

Being in country SA I can't speak with any authority, but I believe the SRL will pay great benefits in the future with cross suburb access, making it easier for many people to leave the car at home, or not have one at all. I agree with you 100% about upgrading rural rail. It is happening, even though it is happening slowly. I hope my state improves both suburban and rural rail too.😊

I know train people ( like me) live trains and it is a solution to transportation however every truck is a JOB. The avenue into road transport driving is alot less expensive and time than training train drivers.Roads upgrade means everyone can use the road. Improved road base, passing lanes. Employment of supportive services, fuel, truck stop cafes, mechanics and tyre retailers in country towns and most importantly the ratio of peole employed in regional areas in road transportation than rail. The standard gauge conversion to Mildura employed no local peole or contractors or suppliers. Rail employment in regional is very small compared to road. You upgrade roads to take heavy trucks and maintenance is reduced. A train derailment on interstate line stops all rail on that line, weeks and months. Trucks go around a road accident and continue to deliver. Farmers with an average crop season can subsidise income owning and driving a grain truck. $400 million was spent Mildura to Dunolly...two trains a day! Rail to Albury should be every 20 minute container trains. How many freight train drivers live and work from country towns compared to truck drivers?

@xr6lad 16 дней назад
@@rsinclair6560100%. It also isolated the region for absolutely zero benefit (unlike the Wodonga line where it made sense as it was a through line to other states) . And prevented a more direct passenger rail returning. As it has elsewhere in Victoria. It was a lazy solution for a state government to milk the federal government of paying for it without thinking through the long term outcomes.
@rsinclair6560
@rsinclair6560 16 дней назад
@@xr6ladI Knew Albury and Wodonga extremely well during the late 1960's and 70's. When Albury was a massive yard and depot. I know of standard 8 movie film with 38', standard goods lined up in steam and Diesel locomotives swapped at the boarder. But the freight by rail was protected under law until the Liberal Grinner Government took over years and years Labor. Anyway to keep the topic light....Birchip has a great bakery, pies awesome and snot boxes and you need to see the Mallee Bull in the main street.

@@driver667yes I'm surprised how mostly straight it is after seeing the clips so far. Imagine if the track was upgraded to 160kph for Vlocity trains (won't happen) can easily do the trip Mildura to Melb in 5.5-6 hours. As you probably know the Perth to Kalgoorlie line is also mostly straight, is 653km and with their 160kph Prospector train covers the trip in 6.5-7 hours. They have 1 train a day in each direction, with Mondays & Fridays with 2 services a day. 3 car sets. Perth is more than half the size of Melbourne, Kalgoorlie also smaller than the Mildura region with its nearby towns.
