I admire your sense of adventure in driving it home!

I would never drive a car over 30mins with a flashing engine light. Most times it's a bad coil or something, but could be bad timing or low compression. Either way, you're gonna be dumping raw fuel into your cat which not only wastes gas but clogs your cat. I would unplug an injector on the misfiring cylinder before I do a trip like this to prevent any further damage

An 800 mile road trip and you didn't check the oil level carefully? At least I would have had extra oil with me just in case. Hopefully the oil level warning light is working and you haven't done any additional damage. Good thing you didn't need to replace the battery because it's a real pain to do. Glad you made it home ok.

Check the plugs and timing. If the valve cover gaskets and plug seals leak, oil will get into the plug chamber and cause a misfire. Could also be related to the timing belt and cam chain tensioners if the timing belt service was neglected. There's you tube videos on this. It's common with these v8 engines.

That's not a rod knock , that's a busted chain tensioner pad....can jump time and bend valves if you're lucky

When you get done fixing it, it will be worth it. I just got one myself. Planning on my lift kit, aggressive tires, tow hooks and skid plates.

Exhaust leak maybe. Exhaust manifold would be more noisy when cold and quieten a bit when warmed up.

Great video, Josh. I might overlook checking the oil before the first start too if I had just bought a nice Touareg like that. All the excitement. Eventually, reality does set in and you have to...oh I don't know, open the hood..hmm... It was great seeing parts of I-84 again. I've traveled on that freeway many times, and I-15 too. I miss Boise.

My sisters vw Touareg battery died and her key got stuck in the ignition and we had to jump it to get the key out

That’s rod knock doesn’t go away when it warms up.

The problem with that car is ( the main problem) is its a petrol basically worthless, `If it was a diesel at least you could drive it.

You need cleen all engine and oil pan

Common fault. Timing/cam chain tensioners. Timing/cam chain back of engine so engine out.

I’m about to do the same thing in my 1984 f150! I noticed the rod knock about a week ago and I have to leave in 2 days

All the touregs on youtube n on forums. I have never heard any good news abt them. There r always issues

New vee dubs are garbage plastic throw away cars. I have a few 60's bugs with dual carbs,big cams,bored out engine etc.. And they never break down. The only car broke in my yard is a car with a computer/ECU issue. Anyone with a clue about mechanics or cars,knows these new cars are plastic junk.
