Corey had to have this 1979 Buick Lesabre when he saw it at an rural auction in central Pennsylvania. We went to pick it up today. Sure, we could have trailered it, but where is the fun in that? Instead we drove it home using more coolant than fuel per mile.

Down under we love those 3800s, our Holden Commodore from 88-94 have the 86 3.8L (around 200hp stock) version commonly found in your 86 87 88 front wheel drive buicks, ours are reconfigured for rwd though and go damn hard, we love em, we call em mangas cause the sound they make on limiter lol make great burnout engines 😂 I'm actually in the process of giving mine an overhaul and adding a turbo setup ,should see around 350bhp and around 600-650nms give or take of torque on like 12-15psi 👍 Should be fun until the t5 dies 😂

My Grandparents had an 83 LeSabre so this took me back. The washer fluid reminded me of my Grandpa. Ethylene glycol coolant was not expensive and not readily available in the 1930-40s, so alcohol based coolants (probably similar to washer fluid) were common. It lowered the boiling point and didn't cool as well especially in the non pressurized radiators, so he would use straight water, draining it out at night in the winter, then filling it again the next morning. After WWII ethylene glycol became more available, but he said it was $7/gal (something like $100 today), so he saved for a few months finally getting enough for the car then didn't have to drain the rad each night.

First - I like your car. I remember when these were new and there were lots of them around. The LeSabre Limited is the nicer model with the nicer velour interior. It's also nice looking in red. A Buick 350 is a good engine - in 79 that was about the end of them being produced. They started using smaller engines in 1980 and later. The body still looks really decent on it. I know you just bought it for $450, and I don't know what your plans are - there is obviously a pretty major problem with all the smoke out the tail pipe. But guys - when you bought coolant and added the Bars leak - you fill up the RADIATOR first, not the overflow bottle! You're driving with nothing but air in the cylinder heads. You're making the problem worse. And if the HOT light came on, the engine was up at 255 F at least! You need to let it cool off for a good 2 hours at least! You added washer fluid and it was boiling - that's not good guys. You can crack the block or the cylinder heads, if that hasn't already happened before you bought it. And you kept driving. I know it's a cheap car, but if you want to save it, don't make the problems you already have worse! Good luck.
@thegearknob7161
@thegearknob7161 4 года назад
Body on that isn't bad for a 79, you did well for $450! I imagine you're still falling over parts for those where you live. That said I've not seen a head gasket fail as bad as that and I remember Rover!
@dr_olds1430
@dr_olds1430 4 года назад
No, I own one; any parts that are not mechanical are surprisingly hard to find. No one ever saved them or ever cared about them, so body panels and such are impossible to find. But they still make everything in terms of mechanical components.
@thegearknob7161
@thegearknob7161 4 года назад
@@dr_olds1430 Mechanical is what I meant. It looks like the body panels are in good order, so they wont need replacement. Most cars of that age are full of holes unless they're garage queens. Interior doesn't look in too bad shape either.

I wouldn't drive it far on that blown head gasket, it will destroy it. I had a similar situation on my Buick 350 Regal. I ended up replacing both head gaskets with the blue Fel Pro ones. I chased all the head bolt holes with a tap and brake cleaner then after cleaning deck surfaces and installing gaskets tightened in 3 steps in sequence. Put it back together and ran great. Don't forget to use a little film of oil on the head bolt threads as well as where the bolts contact the cylinder head for maximum torque wrench acccuracy. The bolt holes in the Buick 350 block are blind and don't pass through the water jacket like a Chevy 350.

Moe,Larry , Curly , first with a bad head gasket it's going to over heat no matter what , except this one trick ..keep the radiator cap loose don't tighten it , that way the coolant just flow's thru the system until you get it too where you needed it to be . i'm from the L.V as well and should had just carried jugs of plain ole water , now? that you boiled it up , you could had warped the head , and that's going to cost you more than what you paid for the car..unless you do it your self , but that car is a nice cruiser , my buddy had the 2 door like this one , only thing was when his mechanic replaced the fuel filter at the carb, 2 days later it went up in flames :) D-duncan might repair it ;)

The engine gave up about 70 miles later...while I was driving my Grandma home. Fortunately, my Dad's adolescent antics had steeled her nerves to such things, and she calmly rode out my coasting across three express lanes and round and off ramp to wait for a tow. I rebuilt the engine for my high school auto shop class that year. I paid $500 for it in 1987.

The only problems Buick engines of the 70s and 80s had were due to lack of maintenance. Skipping oil changes ia a death sentence for a Buick. Steel gears in the aluminum timing cover housing needs good oil. Dont foget, the 231 grand national engine is just a 350 Buick minus 2 cylinders and a shorter stroke. All the same turbo principles apply. The blocks can hold 1000hp. Bottom ends... 400hp with earlier stud/nut rods. 500hp/6000rpm with a good balance job with the later capscrew rods this should have.

Great video but you may want to check your edits since you were driving east on old 22 just about into Foglesville and then you were in “Hamburg” which you went past 20 mins before Foglesville.

i would have done bars leaks head gasket fix. surprisingly it works. i used it on my 96 camaro LT1. it's been several thousand miles, no more antifreeze in the oil, no more steam out the exhaust.

The Bat-smoke screen works well. Robin would be pointing and nudging Batman as if he were jealous. Otherwise, I like the car :)

if radiator leaks, don't use barsleak, it jams everything up, pour black pepper down the radiator, black pepper is totally natural, strong and doesn't clog up and you can just keep adding until it stopped leaking (bandaid sollution)

Smoking deal you got there lol. But definitely worth it. Rebuild or drop another motor in. Looks like a nice car other than the motor

Head gaskets....before you melt a piston....car trailers are cheap to rent at Uhaul. It takes considerable work to recommission a car from storage prior to driving it even a mile.... otherwise internal damages occur and show themselves later.

Buick 350s are great engines. They don't like to be overheated tho. At all.

Kseal and liquid glass works with a flush and straight water. The antifreeze and the smartass ruined what could have been a fun video. Get new friends, or at least new camera/commentary

The use windshield washer fluid as antifreeze is not recommended. For the radiator, Believe it or not, plain water would be best!!!!!

might have blown head gasket, but pouring cold coolant into hot radiator and block, and then starting, is a good way to crack a head or block. when adding coolant to a hot engine, make sure it is running.

If you are going to do a head gasket job, do it right away, dont let it sit, the cylinders will be pitted in short order if you let it sit around for any length of time, especially if you poured straight water in it.

My mother had a light blue 79 Buick LeSabre turbo when I was little. That thing was optioned out had the mag wheels and everything.She traded it for a Mazda 626 in 1982 and the man who ended up with the Buick ended up blowing it up I think probably because the turbo never really spooled up with my mom driving it!

Should be adding water to the radiator rather than antifreeze. Water will do much less damage once it gets into the crankcase. The reason is, antifreeze has silicates in it.

2 bottles and no thermostat will do it if you can get it hot enough i've found that blue devil tends to weld the thermostat shut
