Driving a 1964 4-speed Wildcat

Here is a little drive in a real-deal 2x4 4-speed Wildcat, stock 425, T-10 trans, 3.42 positrac, and carbs. It moves pretty good for a 4200lb full size boat (without passengers and so on). The T-10 has a cool whine to it, kind of like an M-21 or M-22. Just a fun drive around the block, with a little gratuitous acceleration.

Love it! I'm putting together a '63 421 Pontiac Grand Prix with the T-10, but a 3.64 rear end (Grand Prix 4-speeds typically came with the 3.42). Your video is serious motivation. The whine of that transmission is like the sound of heaven.

What a cool and rare Buick. Never seen a Wildcat with a manual transmission. I had a 1969 but it was an automatic. It ran really good for a heavy car. Sure did surprise a lot of muscle cars with it.

I watched the video before I read the description - about 50 years ago I had a '59 Apache with a 327 and a M-22 - and boy do I remember that whine! I did not remember that T-10s had the same whine; thanks for the whine and the memories. A full size car, standard steering, standard brakes, a V8, and a 4 speed on a country road - heaven. My Dad told me people bought cars like that for "pulling boat trailers".

Sweet ride. I was raised on the great 50's and '60's cars on Woodward Avenue (Detroit area). Buddy of mine had the '64 Wildcat, 2x4, 4-speed, headers, and it ran pretty darned strong. I have always loved the so-called "odd ball" high-performers like the Buick Wildcat.

My buddy in high school had a '63 with the 430 Wildcat engine and a 2 speed Powerglide. Robin Blue, a white top, with white bucket seats. I'm 56, and, by far, this was the FASTEST car I've ever been in. It was insane. It would do 80+ in low. He pampered this car to the limit. It was museum quality, with fender skirts. I mean, this car was faster than you-know-what. Unfortunately, on a clear sunny day, his EMPLOYER (!) had a fatal heart attack while driving his 1973 LTD and T-boned the Buick at about 40 mph, before he passed. While a very stout car, it was totaled. A very unfortunate chain of events.That Wildcat will always be in my mind. A really great car. Superb in every sense.

What a combo to have, so rare, in a Buick too! AM-FM to boot!Another very rare option for the day.A car one really has to be able to drive, having to do the work of steering, braking, etc. The car sounds wonderful.I'm glad to see the car has a good home.Sigh, for $1000 quite a few years ago I could have had a '64 Wildcat, albeit a 4-door hardtop automatic with factory A/C. Could not afford it then, I kick myself now. It had radio delete and the honorable Judge thought radios were distracting.

What a great rare car. The 425s and 401s were almost always tied to a power eating dynaflow transmission. Buick stuck with that transmission and as kid growing up in the 60s most of us stayed way away from Buicks because of the transmission.

@Quickened1
@Quickened1 5 лет назад
I had a '63 445 Wildcat with the DUAL PATH TURBINE, 2 speed trans, (incorrectly identified as a Dynaflow but had the same basic housing). This was an experimental transmission made only in '61, '62, and '63. If you want to know more about this transmission, look for it in the Motor's transmission service manual from the era. You'll only find a few pages on it. It was also known as the switch-pitch turbine. By 1963 Buick had perfected it, as there were subtle differences between it, and the two previous years of production. To this day, it was the most impressive car I ever owned, and I only wish I could go back in time to buy one new off the showroom floor. I simply cannot list all the reasons, but fuel economy and power delivery were incredible for the day, not to mention, unless I did it manually, it never shifted a gear! I will never forget the day I put old school, bias ply, 60 series racing tires on the back and dropped it into low&go! That was the first time I'd ever been in a passenger car that nearly lifted the front wheels off the ground, every time, it actually might have, don't really know for sure. The thing that really set the cat off, is that I figured out how to shift the thing once it maxed out the rpm's at 60, took a couple tries. There is a very special technique, and once I figured it out, the car would slam into second and take off like a rocket to it's top speed... I only wish I could have taken it to the track to get an elapsed quarter mile. All I know is, there were a lot of Mustangs, Camaros, and even a few Corvettes, that ate my dust, and forget about the rice burners... Those were the days... 😘

Very much enjoyed that wee ride in this beast. I'm never likely to be in one for real. Rather surprised at the lack of power steering in such a big car, especially an American one, but I completely agree that it's a far better driving experience, except maybe when parking it. @neatoauctions So what you are saying is anyone that drives an old car with old equipment should upgrade them to be able to drive them? So, should all Model A drivers put a power steering setup on their original cars? Should everyone driving a concours-quality original 1934 Packard upgrade their steering to make the car safe in battle? Lastly, YES, I AM very pleased with the short shifter and horrendous steering. My ignorance is bliss, and this is the point I have been tring to make.

Everything about that trans tells me it likely came out of a car set up for a road race. It is wide ratio with a closer 3&4 similar to the M 20 in ratio but with most definitely straight cut gears. It is most likely a Doug Nash. Nash took T- 10s and modified them for racing. He got so good at it he started building his own cases which bear his name. Richmond bought him out and put his name on the corvette trans. If it has the needle bearing on the input shaft and it goes out change it to the ball bearing type. The needles are race only and they had to change them every race. If you have to change the trans you can get about the same quality from a Super Case Muncie with straight cut. Buicks have a lot of low end torque because of the extra weight which could explain why ( straight cut ) it is in there! There is a reason they are still building Nailheads. Sounds good.

@neatoauctions Seriously? You are STILL stuck on the flailing arm thing, eh? Airbags are also safer, as well as crumple zones, as well as traction control, as well as... where would it stop if I were to update the car to be completely safe? Also, if you couldn't tell, I was having a lot of fun driving the car, and it was not because of a steering box...

The Borg-Warner T-10 was one of the smoothest shifting transmission in the 60's. Mopars even had them in 1963.

Does this car have arm-power steering. You seemed to be doing quite a lot of wheel winding

I'm really surprised that even in 1964 a buick of this size does not have power steering. The Wildcat was almost the size of a Electra . I would sure hate to park this car

I'm sure it was an option, but it was all ala carte you ordered it if you wanted it then. My pops had a 63 LeSabre that had the power steering, but it was way over assisted and didn't have a very good road feel, but that wasn't uncommon for that era either...

my older brothers both had 64 Buicks, both convertibles one was a LeSabre and had power steering,and the other had a Skylark and it didn't I know what you mean about the ala carte, everything was a option then there were no packages like today
