When you shift a Mack transmission pause in neutral and take a drink or a smoke between shifts so you can let the revs fall so you can get into the next gear without scratching it!
@@laquanwashington7168 Its all about your timing, if you rev it up to 2100 rpm you have to wait for the revs to drop to 1200 before the shift can be completed.
Rev to 2100, double clutch, stick 'er in the next gear at 1250 and on up the ladder until you're doin' 67mph. Back down the ladder when you get to the next little hill or headwind, in reverse order. I can still do it in my sleep, and actually did way back when. I had the privilege of driving a 1977 model R tractor pulling a bulk dairy wagon for a couple hundred K miles before I made a career change. My boss didn't believe in power steering, so you almost needed a crow bar to steer it in the tight turns. He also didn't believe in A/C or air ride seats...mercy, what a ride! Wish I could do it again! Thanks for sharing.
EM6 2 valve mechanical mud stick 6 spd drove many R models and DM models with this drivetrain they are rock solid run circles around the new crap today and last a lot longer
I used to drive one of those and on occasion, a U model as well for Cumberland Farms over 30 yrs ago. They weren't the fastest or prettiest, but they were built tough, very reliable, and would always get you home.
I loved my Mack trucks....drove them from 1980 to 1984 in Gainesville Florida. Thank you so much for a great video and you camera work was awesome. It made me feel I was back in the cab...very very cool video...Thank You!!!
You need a Jake on that bad boy, any time somebody tells me I shouldn’t ever shift with the Jake I tell them try driving a 5 speed Mack up a hill and tell me how it goes! 😂
Evan Rivera yes, those 5 speeds have big gaps between the gears, and when climbing a hill a Jake helps the Rpm’s drop a lot faster to get in the next gear before you loose too much speed. For example Instead of 2 seconds for the revs to drop from 2100 rpm back to 1300 when you go to upshift, it only takes about half a second if you have the Jake turned on. Meaning instead of a 2 second delay to get it from 2nd into 3rd you can slide it in immediately and keep accelerating.
I did the same thing first time driving an R model. Learned on a 238 Detroit with an rtoo 9513, going from that to a 237 with a 5 speed and mud stick was quite an adjustment. Went from shifting up at 2150 and down at 1800 to shifting up at 1900 and down at 1200.
I run these r model maxitorque ext range trans from 2100-1200 or 2000 to 1100 to not wind it out so much. Only supposed to use lo and 1 and then go hi and 1 and run through gears if loaded heavy. Be in the right gear before grade or find yourself in neutral grinding away haha.
I drove a DM 686 mixer truck 237 with a mud stick perfect gearboxes for curb pouring 1st on the main Lo on the compound perfect speed for the masons I drove another DM 686 with a 31 yd packer body 237 with a mud stick your not gonna fast but you will get home every night there strong and reliable I also drive my buddy’s 1988 Mack RD 600 K 285 with a 12 spd Mack gearbox
There's a few different ways you can shift. all five out and go to high you can shift three and go to high drove a transmission like this for 20 years plus
This is a descent transmission if your running around gravel quarries and construction sites...As for the highway, especially hilly highways...What was Mack thinking!!?? We've got one at our company. Stupidest truck ever! A Superliner with a five speed. We work in the Colorado mountains, sooo....pretty sure gears 3-5 have never been touched😂
They do sound good, but man were they junk. The 864 naturally aspirated and the turbo 865’s and 866’s all had the same problem...crankshafts would snap like they were made of kindling.
No, it is 2 sticks but it’s called a 6 speed low hole. you only use the second stick when you’re in first gear on the main trans. Basically your main stick is 1-5, and the aux has reverse, lo and direct. You can only use lo in 1st on the main so you start out in lo first, shift the aux to direct first then you just use 1 stick from then on.
No it’s called a 6 speed. Main trans is a 5 speed, compound has a Low Direct and Reverse. You only use low in first gear but it does give you 5 speeds of reverse.
Dude you are grinding every single gear becuase you are shifting way too early. You have to wait for your rpms to come down. You probably trying to use the clutch too. Your not a trucker are ya? Not like a school bus, these trucks don’t have synchronized transmissions. Need to match rpms to transmission speed. The owner of this truck would probably kick you in your sack if he found out you borrowed his truck without asking and then beat the piss out of it
shortthrow50 Yep, I only drive it a few times a year. It's mostly used to teach high school students so they can get their CDL. Luckily Macks can take it! Lol.
revving up high isn't the problem, sticking in the gear before the rpms drop to the sweet spot is, at least this is what I've learned in ATS driving a non sync lol.
@@vkuscak as you let off the throttle, gently keep pressure on the shifter. It'll come out when it's right. Move it to next position, gently very gently apply slight pressure and when the rpms are right, it should fall in. May need a little tap on the throttle when it gets close so the rpms don't fall too fast. Lower rpms make an easier shift.
@@19crazydude thx for the tip, unfortunately i dont drive the real thing, and the sim rig im using doesnt have tactile feedback in the shifter. would love to drive this truck irl though cheers
You obviously have never driven some of the old Mack's with the Mack TRL1076 Transmission's in em. They are a great transmission but they could be a bitch sometimes to shift.
