Driving a mile in The Emerald Bullet 1962 Mercedes W111

Take a drive with me in the Emerald Bullet. I feel more torque with the 2.8 liter motor than I did with the 2.2 liter. My butt dynometer says it is much faster. How does the engine sound to you? Is this what a 2.8 liter Mercedes Benz engine is supposed to sound like? Notice all the gauges and the clock working.

You don't need to put first gear unless you came to a complete stop. Just depress the clutch and then release it slowly while acelerating and you can keep second gear while almost stopped. And no it's not a 3 speed, it's a 4 speed.

What a fantastic car these were. I remember driving my father's 220SE, W111 in 1966. I was 19 years old ,, and no car today comes even close to the pleasure it gave me Thank you for making the video. You lucky bastard to own one. ! Only wish I could afford one of these in Australia today. Driverless cars are the future ? Thank god I probably won't live to see it.

I like the sound, it brings me back many fond childhood memories. The vertical ribbon type speedometer with colors changed from yellow to red is so fantastic. Thank you for sharing. Chang, Singapore

Had a 250s and 280sel didn't sound like yours in fact they so quite you can only the engine if you rev it around the 4k rpm. Yours sounds really bad. By the way the 1st and 2nd gears is just to get moving so stop revving the shit out
@clemenscity

Gus Ibrahim you proably had a w108 because w111 never came AS 250s or 280sel, and ITS suppose to sound like this although he is way to late to change gears

Engine certainly sounds 6-cylinder..more smooth running & subdued sounding when revved up unlike the 4-cylinders which become harsh & loud. I believe in those days they did have a 6-cylinder petrol engine of 2.2 litre so whether 2.2 or 2.3 (in the newer 230.6 W115) or 2.8 W108) etc. the sound i hear here all 'belongs' to that era of Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder engines, which of course is somewhat different from their newer 6-cylinders from W116 onwards. On a sidenote, if you want to get hear something quite similar, the Citaro bus (with the smaller 6.4 litre in-line 6 diesel) sounds something like that in a kick-down acceleration mode ! I understand these old car engines are from a very different era from a modern bus engine but (surprise or not) they can sound alike too..being 6-cylinder in configuration i'll say is the basic ingredient behind it.

seems to be a 4 cyl engine seems to be geared very slow, something in the area of 4:1 these cars had a built-in quality that is more rewarding than sparkling performance

this one needs some grease, you will have to top up the grease in all the 16 points , being suspensions, shaft etc... , valves need looking into and tuning and timing , but it moves all you need is some TLC , I like the manual on the Nelson, all I have is a auto but I feel true driving is on tree for a car this age...Nice video , enjoyed it and good Luck Mate...

You should lubricate the doors, steering, etc. Sounded a bit creeky to me. Otherwise sweet car man. Engine sounds fantastic and interior looks great. I also really lime the manual column shifter. Nice car, and thanks for sharing!

My original 230 was bad repaired, one piston rod broke out of the oil sump. I found a W114 250E that was converted to carburators. My car is a W111 1968 Automatic. I now I can't pass 3200RPM or it will shift to the next gear. I didn't know it was going fast until some neigbhbours told me they were trying to catch me up ( we live in a hilly zone) and no wonder what they did, they just couldn't

The car is making engine/transmission noise like hell. This is very regrettable! When in good condition, the car wouldn't produce more noise than modern cars! This is a shame. How dare you show a car in this conditions? The car deserve a general (serious) overhaul by dedicated mechanics. A shame!

Looks a nice car. I think you forgot to use your indicators though. Or didn't they have them for this model year? Current posh cars do that a lot too, turning into a street without using blinkers, so you have to let another 50 or so cars pass before you can get to the other side of the road, instead of being able to go while the car turning in slows down traffic.

bademeister i just thought it looked like he turned that wheel very easily. the cars ive driven without powersteering made me use all my strength for it to turn. yeah that is a thing of the past unfortunately, here in sweden the diesel has gone up again and is more expensive than the petrol. i drive a 123 240D which i picked up from a field almost 5 years ago, but its in pretty bad nick now, rear axle is crap, front suspension arm has snapped, brake mastercylinder most likely gone too or one of the brake curcuits, and the rust of course but it runs brilliantly fires up like nothing, and none of the w123s ive driven are as easy to shift as mine.
