We have tried to share all our experiences in #RfLife as we have learned so much for the first time. This is no different. We are sharing our journey of learning about having a HDT (Heavy Duty Truck) or some would say a "Tractor". We don't claim to have all the answers. We are definitely learning as we go. That's what makes the RV Lifestyle so much fun to share. Hope this helps some of you on your journey as well.
Remember the truck we spend $65,000 to buy and is a used 2019 mack Anthem. Modifications to a HDT can cost anywhere from $30k to $100k depending on what you are wanting to do and use your truck for while you travel. A great resource is Http://www.HallHaulers.com

You could be doing a pre-trip inspection while the air goes up. Check lights, flats, leaks, loose hoses, mud flaps, everything.

Congrats, and I think you both did great! Here's some tips from a fellow Mack Anthem owner and driver: 1. Get that air leaking down overnight checked out, it's not normal. Likely going to be a bad leveling valve or pinhole leak in a suspension or cab air bag, but could be anything. Easy to DIY and at least narrow down location, I already gave you some usual suspects. There's also the air tanks and dozens of quick release fittings on the inside of the left frame rail next to the transmission. 2. Stop in Harbor Freight and get a pack of those mini bungee cords. Truck stops often have them, but for more money. Use one on each side to pull the windshield curtain up off the seat belt. Really bad design from Mack, still present in my '22 truck. Pulling the curtain a little further back and up frees up the belt to move like it should. 3. When you get out, before you slam the door, turn around and pull down on the seat belt to reel it all the way in, to keep from slamming it in the door. Eventually it will land across the striker and cut the seat belt. 4. When you do need to idle up while parked do this: put your foot on the throttle to rev it up to 800-900 rpm, then hold. Turn on the cruise control, then press the set button and take your foot off the throttle. It will hold the high idle, and you can adjust with the +/- speed setting buttons. Turn cruise off or tap the brake pedal to restore normal idle speed. 5. Driving a semi with Google Maps is a good way to get in a jam. Not just usual low clearance hazards, more specifically truck restrictions. I saw some of those roads you turned onto and just cringed, even with you being bobtail. If your Mack has the built in GPS, it's actually quite good. Otherwise, get a trucking GPS. 6. Atlanta. I live near Atlanta and drive around it almost daily. There are truck restrictions. Through trucks over 6 wheels are prohibited inside I-285. One or two left lanes are also usually prohibited for trucks over 6 wheels. HOV lane doesn't count, so remember to count only regular travel lanes. That said, very unlikely you'd ever get pulled over for those, but if you do it ain't a cheap ticket. Motor Carrier Enforcement and Georgia State Patrol do patrol in Atlanta and perform roadside inspections in some really dangerous places. They won't care that you're "not for hire." Obey the law and don't be the tall blade of grass LOL. 7. Grease that truck by every 15k miles, and expect to change fuel filters at 15k on average. PM interval is 60k, I get mine done at 50k. If you haven't already, stop in a Mack dealer and pick up a gallon of motor oil, a gallon of the correct coolant, some windshield washer fluid, and a spare set of fuel filters. You may not be willing to DIY fuel filters, but at least having the correct parts on hand you can hire anyone to do it anywhere, anytime. While you're at the dealer, stop in service and get a service history. With 500k and the year model, that's probably a lease turn in. If it hasn't been done in the last 300k, you may want to consider having them run the overhead adjustments. Usually requires at least an overnight stay, and just under $1,000. Good news is, you only need to do that every 300k. Also look to see when the last 7th injector and ignitor was done, that's a 150k service item. There is a pdf on the Mack website with all this, you should download it and get familiar with it. Sorry to blast your comments with a huge wall of text. I hope all this helps - I really want you to succeed with this big truck adventure and rooting for you!

I thought the same about the air psi level. My old Columbia will hold air for quite an impressive amount of time when left parked. I replaced the airbags on the cab as they had been losing a ton of pressure.

So happy that you were able to join our crazy journey. We are asked a lot about the truck. You can see that in another video. Remember these trucks can be found in the $40k to $60k range when they are 5 to 7 years old. So they are very affordable.

@TonyBenton728 why does it matter?... For 3 years we have spent thousands of hours editing... building community.. helping people.... giving hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to charities across the United States as a group... we have worship together, cried and laughed together. Built a reputation to all kinds of Brands as a movement making a change in this world so they wanted to partner paying thousands of dollars to help build something only God can have the credit for because we could have never done it... This journey is not for everyone and it is only going to get bigger and louder... We are so thankful and blessed. On we go... the best part is those that don't want to be a part don't have to. Looking forward to what happens in 2024.

@@SwitchItUpLife You are correct it’s not for everyone. I drove for 41 +years. I know the advantages of the HDT and disadvantages. Yea you get the truck cheaper than a modern pickup but all of the other things you do to get it to do what you want is not factored into the total cost. You have to have a second vehicle to get around which is this case will be a jeep. Shelia will be shadowing you while you are gone from point A to B. There are a lot of things I don’t agree with about the way laws are but unless I wanted to spend and ton of time fighting them there is nothing I can do about it. You will spend the majority of your time on west . Because to get a rig that long anywhere on the east coast is extremely limited. We are somewhat limited to the places we can stay even with our F-450 and 45 feet Riverstone.

As a great grandma I'm not so certain I would use the word priceless. Maybe overly tired. I am a retired driver like Mr. Smith, and please, there is a reason why the commercial industry has there drivers drive a maximum of 10 hours a shift (with short breaks of course). It's been proven your body and all of it's blood system gets stressed out sitting and not moving for hours on end. It can cause blood clots. So try not to drive for such long periods of time. By the way, great video.

40 years plus Class A driver. Take your time. Be careful bobtailing without a trailer. A lot of torque without the trailer and it can take off on you when it’s wet. Remember your in our world now and most of us take it professionally. Ask questions from other drivers. Most drivers are willing to help and give advice. Take care. Also get a CB radio and keep it on 19. It may save your life or someone else’s.

To air up a little faster you can turn on the cruise and hit set or accel see if it will take the truck to 1200 rpm high idle. Works on many vehicles but not all. If your trailer will be 54K lbs the tractor has to be 20K lbs you will be closer to the 80K lbs gross combined than you may think.

I drove for 10 years, and of course the majority where standard transmissions, but being up high in the truck sure helps seeing the view from above. I drove many makes/models and have to admit my favourites where Kenworth & Peterbilt, with Volvo coming in last. I realize much for buyers, has to do with who will give you the best deal, as they all do a fine job of moving goods throughout North America! Even today, I enjoy driving still, after being retired for 5 years, and always look forward to driving our Tiffin Phaeton motorhome, and seeing what's around that next corner, enjoying the view along the way!

I know this trip was your first in the new ride, but the sound needs a lot of work. I have written before about some sound issues, but I hope it gets worked out. Longtime follower, look forward to the experience.

I, Rick, lived in Merced, CA for 2 years from 1995-1997. Beautiful place to live and love the weather but way to expensive

Great Video. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing with us. You might need to find a new mic location. I had difficulty hearing due to road noise even though I understand it was quieter for you. Just a whole new learning curve. 😊

Ha ha! I lived in LA for over a decade and I love driving in NYC (one rule: bumper in front wins) and Boston is a little crazier (NYC rule with the addition: if it's wide enough for a vehicle it's a lane), but I agree that traffic in and around Atlanta, Georgia is absolutely the worst!!!! Yes, you deserve a sash and a pin! Best...

With all of the equipment I've driven, pressing the throttle helps bring air system to pressure quicker. That way your wife doesn't get too bothered by the beeping

One question I forgot to ask, what is your MPG, it won’t be much different from when you are towing. Just interested in the new trucks. I have 2014 Volvo 780 and I was getting 12MPG Bobtailing back up to AK in 2020. I think I get 8 to 10 pulling.

What do you have to do at port or scales? How many camp or rv park are you not going to get into now?
@badgerpa9
@badgerpa9 3 месяца назад
What states have RVs stop at the scales? If you know the size each RV park in the world will hold and provide that on an excel I bet they could then tell you that, but since they do not have the size limit for every RV park it would be really really stupid to think they could give you a number.

Is there a fast idle so the airbags can fill up faster?
@jessicaw.6321
@jessicaw.6321 3 месяца назад
Is a current driver. I recommend when the air pressure is building you can actually put your foot on the throttle and give it some fuel and it will air the tank up faster. So therefore you're not listening to the beat constantly.

In my DP RV, I can turn the cruise control on and hit set and the rpm's go up to 1500 to help air up
