Hanover was previously named Wapello, in honor of Chief Wapello of the Weskwaki Tribe.
The town sits on the Apple River, a tributary of the Mississippi. A natural drop in the Apple River made the town an ideal site for a dam and mill, which was built in 1863. The wooden mill operated until 1949.
Hanover is known as "The Mallard Capital of the World" thanks to Whistling Wings, the world's largest Mallard duck hatchery, located in Hanover. Whistling Wings supplies hundreds of thousands of ducks to restaurants, wildlife refuges, and research facilities.
