At 12:51 your lucky you didn't get slammed you never stopped at the stop sign and right there by the hospital and B building... that road is always busy
From Boston. But my son lives in Altoona. Took that journey many times. Consider Altoona my 2nd home. So many memories of me and my son. makes me want to cry
I’ve moved to Altoona a couple of years ago and HELL YES IT SNOWS! When I drive it’s so hard to get up the hill where I live also, lots of crazy people in town last I heard screaming from my neighbors at 2AM in the morning.
I was in Altoona back in April and was going to do a solar panel job in Portage.I decided not to and went to Binghamton NY originally where I am from for a few days, first time in 30 years.I live in Raleigh NC which is a boomtown growing fast.Altoona looks like it has seen better days.
@@kookiesandcream6010 Sounds like you live near me. hahaha!! I live on top of 17th street and it's definitely a huge change considering I lived in the country in Sinking Valley for most of my life

Altoona is the largest city in Pennsylvania in the region between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. Altoona's most prosperous era was from roughly 1880 through 1950 during the heyday of the Pennsylvania Railroad (now the Norfolk Southern). At the 5:30 point the trip passes over the Norfolk Southern which is one of the primary east-west rail routes from Newark NJ to Chicago. At the 7:00 point the trip goes past the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Altoona Hospital which is one of the largest employers in that section of West-Central PA. Altoona is in a valley in the Allegheny Mountains and one can see how hilly the terrain is. There is a Penn State two year branch campus in Altoona and Altoona is also the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates AA affiliate in the Eastern League.
@@Donn512 wel we have Hershey I live in Lancaster so I’m like 30 minutes away and we Dutch wonderland and we cn the hotel aka cartoon Network Hotel and it might be trashy but it’s home where all my friends and family live and we Felid of screams don’t believe me look it up
@@makeitevenweirder3045 I was born and I lived in PA for 7 years and the only reason I stayed there was because of family. It's mainly Altoona that looks awful but Pennsylvania is always so depressing and it's never sunny.
amazed, too dramatic!...if you want a video to promote a city for tourists, speak to the mayor about it....this a video to show the reality of a city, the good and the bad!!
Where they are at the red light at 1:00, the crossing section is pleasant valley. To the left leads toward the mall, to the right heads toward Greenwood.
when you drove straight into oncoming traffic and had to drive up onto a sidewalk to avoid getting into a collision, ya know, the place where you edited out your video footage. And no, none of us here think we are law enforcement, but we value the lives of other human beings, unlike you.
@@Andrea1542 13:20 Stop sign with one-way sign. Proceeds to turn the wrong way into oncoming traffic across two lane and then onto a sidewalk. Video footage is cut, then resumed once turned around.
We get a lot of sunshine between june and october. It's definitely not a pretty area, but it's not bad. There are some very lovely areas, just like anywhere else, though it's a fairly depressed area.
Am thinking of a move to Altoona. I would like to hear from those familiar with the area on the good, the bad and the ugly. Would appreciate all comments to help me decide. Thanks for the video and for all who take the time to respond.
I was in Altoona back in April for 2 days and it looks depressing like my hometown of Binghamton NY.I live in Raleigh NC and there is work everywhere but it's expensive here.
I was born in the Altoona Hospital in 1947. I grew up in the city and surrounding areas of Lakemont, Greenwood, Hollidaysburg, and Brooks Mills. I graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1965, then commuted for two years to the Altoona Branch Campus of Penn State and graduated in 1969 after two more years at the main Campus in State College about 45 minutes away. I've returned for brief visits, maybe 4....5 times, in the last 50 years. From your video, it looks like the place I remember; although, you limited the tour to older residential neighborhoods and didn't capture any of the highlights. Almost half of the housing units in the city were built before 1940, but there are some impressive newer areas. The racial demographics state that 93% of the population is White, and 90% of Altoona residents have at least a high school degree or equivalent while 17% have obtained a bachelor's degree. Approximately 17% of the residents are 65 or older. Speaking very generally, I recall the people who live there as being serious, hard-working, down-to-earth, and good-hearted. They are not all the most outgoing, so it might take some time to get to know them. There is not a lot of money there....never has been, even during the peak years of the Pennsylvania Railroad Repair Shops. While it isn't Silicon Valley, you don't see homeless people living in tents on the sidewalk either. The population of the city peaked in the 1990 census at 52K, and as of 2020, had decreased by 17% to slightly less than 44K. Here, 14% of the residents are employed by the local, state, and federal governments. The largest private-industry employer seems to be Healthcare. The median household is slightly over $41K, and since the unemployment rate is under 5%, one must conclude there are many "working poor". About 23% of residents and 18% of families have income levels below the poverty line, and the child poverty rate is 34%. Time has not been kind to this place. Thank you for the clip. Good or bad, one never forgets their home town.
Yeah buddy I cross the street often I must not have crossed the street at 12:52 when you made this video because I'm still alive and watching 84 others watching your absent minded dui driving . Do you come from Altoona I'm guessing you do.
@Kkenroz House There's plenty of nice areas, and there's been a ton of development over the past several years. The angsty bandwagon of hate towards the city is unreasonable, and only parroted by those who moved out 20 years ago or those who are still in high school (or younger) If you've lived in other similar-sized areas (~75-100k population) you'll realize Altoona is one of the better cities of its size in the region. Take Cumberland, MD or Johnstown, PA as examples. Altoona beats those places by a mile in crime, convenience, shopping and general layout. Not to mention Altoona is economically flourishing right about now, which always helps make an area feel better
Dude you blew right through a stop sign at 12:52. You could have killed an altoonaian. But probably would have saved them from a life of misery and blight.
