Dallas is a major city in the state of Texas and is the largest urban center of the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the United States. The city proper ranks ninth in the U.S. and third in Texas after Houston and San Antonio.[8][9] The city's prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, and its position along numerous railroad lines.
Neighborhoods
Central Dallas is anchored by Downtown, the center of the city, along with Oak Lawn and Uptown, areas characterized by dense retail, restaurants, and nightlife. Downtown Dallas has a variety of named districts, including the West End Historic District, the Arts District, the Main Street District, Farmers Market District, the City Center business district, the Convention Center District, and the Reunion District.
Economy
The city's economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare and medical research, and transportation and logistics. The city is home to the third-largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation (behind New York City and Houston).
In 2007-08, Comerica Bank and AT&T located their headquarters in Dallas. Additional Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Dallas include Energy Transfer Equity, HollyFrontier, Southwest Airlines, Tenet Healthcare, Texas Instruments, Dean Foods, Trinity Industries, and Energy Future Holdings. Irving is home to 6 Fortune 500 companies of its own, including ExxonMobil, the most profitable company in the world and the second largest by revenue for 2015,[90] Kimberly-Clark, Fluor (engineering), Commercial Metals, Celanese, and Pioneer Natural Resources.[90] Additional companies headquartered in the Metroplex include American Airlines, Regency Energy Partners, Atmos Energy, Neiman Marcus, 7-Eleven, Brinker International, Primoris Services, Radio Shack, D.R. Horton, AMS Pictures, id Software, ENSCO Offshore Drilling, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Chuck E. Cheese's, Zales and Fossil.
According to Forbes magazine's annual list of "The Richest People in America" published September 21, 2011, the city itself is now home to 17 billionaires, up from 14 in 2009. In 2009 (with 14 billionaires) the city placed 6th worldwide among cities with the most billionaires.[94][95] The ranking does not even take into account the 8 billionaires who live in the neighboring city of Fort Worth.
Dallas is currently the third most popular destination for business travel in the United States, and the Dallas Convention Center is one of the largest and busiest convention centers in the country, at over 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2), and the world's single-largest column-free exhibit hall.
Events
The most notable event held in Dallas is the State Fair of Texas, which has been held annually at Fair Park since 1886. The fair is a massive event, bringing in an estimated $350 million to the city's economy annually. The Red River Shootout, which pits the University of Texas at Austin against The University of Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl also brings significant crowds to the city. The city also hosts the State Fair Classic and Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl.
Sports
The Dallas metropolitan area is home to six major league sports teams: the Dallas Cowboys (National Football League), Dallas Mavericks (National Basketball Association), Texas Rangers (Major League Baseball), Dallas Stars (National Hockey League), FC Dallas (Major League Soccer), and Dallas Wings (Women's National Basketball Association).
The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League play in nearby Arlington, Texas. Since joining the league as an expansion team in 1960, the Cowboys have enjoyed substantial success, advancing to eight Super Bowls and winning five; according to profootballreference.com, as of the end of the 2009 season they were the winningest active NFL franchise. Known widely as "America's Team", the Dallas Cowboys are financially the most valuable sports 'franchise' in the United States, worth approximately 1.5 billion dollars.[122] In 2009, the Cowboys relocated to their new 80,000-seat stadium in Arlington, which was the site of Super Bowl XLV.
The Dallas Mavericks play at the American Airlines Center. They won their first National Basketball Association championship in 2011 led by Dirk Nowitzki.

Not too many people from out of town know about this but Dallas has a pedestrian underground system that connects all the buildings in downtown Dallas with air condition tunnels and a lot of people that work in downtown use them to go from place to place. There are restaurants stores and all kinds of entertainment underground. You can look it up in the Internet I think it’s called the Dallas pedestrian underground tunnels.

Just watched your video of Downtown Dallas. Thank you for recording it & posting it. I left the Dallas area 22 years this month - December, 1994. And then I was living out in Allen, Texas on a horse ranch, & right down the road from Southfork. It has changed a ton since I moved there in January of 1977. I can't get over how there are no shopping places like Sanger-Harris, Titches, Neiman Marcus. I think I located the building I work in - LTV Tower(Webber, Hall, & Caudle. Also, worked at Price Waterhouse. But, I don't see the Mercantile Building, (Raucheer Pierce, Refsnes) anymore. Didn't a building go in with the name Avenue of the Americas? There were places to eat downtown when we girls would go out at lunchtime but, really can't tell where there are any now, hardly. The West-In as it is called now, I remember eating at the Spaghetti Warehouse. Wasn't there a school of some kind down in the area. Isn't the Addison area near that? I can't seem to remember. Not. use to seeing Woodall Rogers road. There are so many newer & taller buildings now, & just doesn't seem user-friendly now.

Nice video! There's another video on RU-vid that I encourage others to watch, downtown Dallas in 1939. Being a Dallas local born and raised, I was surprised to see the downtown look like NY with so many people and very bustling! You would have to know Dallas history as to answer your questions about the downtown area perceived as "empty" Like most major cities, in the earliest days of their forming, Dallas included- everything all businesses homes etc were located in the central city downtown. Also not as many people had cars at the time, as most highways were nonexistent then, and the railroad played a pivot role in early Dallas history. Overtime, post world war 2 and with the baby boom, as more and more families finally began to purchase family single homes, with yards driveways, nearby shopping centers and schools(starting the suburbanization process in the actual "city" then) further away from the central core, but still within the city limits. Also now more and more people had cars and when the highways were built to accommodate all these new drivers, and then when more and more middle class left the city over the decades for the suburbs, that led to an overall decline of Dallas and downtown as well, since most of the businesses moved to the suburbs. Downtown Dallas experienced substantial: banking, building, and real estate during the late 1970s-mid late 80s, as that's when most of our prominent and recognizable skyscrapers were built- my personal favorites:Reunion tower(The Ball, The Bank of America Plaza(green building), Fountain place, and the Renaissance Tower. The BOA plaza and Fountain Place both initially had twin towers planned. Sadly, not long after the 1980s wave of skyscraper development, all the businesses went under, went thru several mergers, closings, etc and that halted any new development prior to the year 2000, around the time they built the American Airlines center. The 1990s Downtown was nothing but a bunch of empty parking lots/buildings, gov workers during the day and a lot of rift/raft at night. I read somewhere that the 1990s skyline represented "the tombstome of Dallas", since so many were in the banking, finance, and real estate industry, who recalled the recalled the 1980s Dallas prosperity. Honestly, the development of present Uptown(immediately north of downtown) is really where all the activity picked up, and was largely ignored downtown during that same time. With the exception of City Place Tower in uptown, which also went under like those downtown, Throughout most of 1980s-1990s, uptown was NOTHING as it's compared to today with all the development it's gotten since 2000. Now, finally, downtown IS back on the rebound. 💯

I think people fail to realize that Dallas is hot as shit during the summer time. Dallas is one of the hottest cities in America during the summer. Hardly, any one wants to be outside during that time. When it’s cooler people venture outside. No one wants to deal with temperatures over 100 degrees with high humidity. I’m from Dallas and most people stay inside.

halfvolley11 Chicago is built completely different. Secondly, people in Chicago can layer up. There’s not much you can do when the temp is 102F with a heat index of 115F. People would much rather be inside than burn to death. The pool is only going to do so much. BTW this is consistent heat...not a little heat wave that midwestern cities get. The normal high temp is 97F in August. That does not include the average 18 triple digit days we see each year. Until you’ve experienced 100F degree temps at night...you probably wouldn’t understand.

I Was there last july and it was hot. Most people avoid the heat and stay inside. Fort Worth Stockyards is a cool place to visit. Take the Trinity Railway from Dallas Union Station.

This is nice with no crowds of people walking around and notice the streets are clean. I'm a native Brooklyn New Yorker and I avoid Manhattan as much as possible, even some places in Brooklyn are horrible, it's dirty and grimy and expensive, go figure. There is nothing worse than hoards of people mindlessly walking all over everywhere, I like space. Mass of people = garbage everywhere.

Here in Australia, we have a strong car culture too, but our downtown areas are much more lively with people

Yup. American cities are very car-centric. There's a new trend now to build more walkable cities/neighborhoods, new urbanism etc. Americans are getting so tired of driving everywhere and being stuck in traffic that they are starting to walk more. But it's a long way to go until we can ditch our cars and walk everywhere. The best cities where you can have a relatively comfortable lifestyle without a car in the US are NYC, DC, Philly, SF, Chicago, Seattle, and Portland. Everywhere else you need a car.

great video but to all the cynics, j utah mostly showed only central downtown. However, uptown, deep vellum, design district, the cedars and the southside had limited coverage. these are more walkable than the center. central downtown dallas wasn't built in the 20s, 30s, and 40s, like the eastern US. it was mostly constructed in the 80s around big oil and finance. these buildings didn't allow for lower level retail. soon however with the revitalization of old corporate headquarters, there will be tom thumbs, parks retail, and walkability. also dallas will soon experiment in having the first connected systems downtown; systems like electronic waste management big data traffic analysis, and big data crowd analysis to help understand peoples interactions with the city. dallas has gotten a lot better and will continue to improve

There are plenty of buildings that were built in the 90s and later that aren't any better! The central part of the city pretends that pedestrians don't exist. There is nothing on the street level to interest the eyes. Way too many blank expanses of wall and parking garages. You go inside these office buildings and the interiors are usually gorgeous. The outside environment is one big disappointment, and that's why almost no one living in Dallas says, "Let's go spend the day downtown!" You go there for the symphony or the museum, and then you drive home. You don't walk around looking for anything of interest, because you'd have to walk for blocks to find it. There would have to be massive reconfiguration to make anyone want to spend time there.

The comment about downtown not being built in the 20's or 30's is not accurate. There is historical color film footage of downtown Dallas life in 1939, taken by a Dallas Times Herald photographer. It shows central downtown Dallas to be a bustling place, with people everywhere, sidewalks packed with pedestrians, streets jammed with traffic. Back then, downtown was where everything in Dallas was; shopping, movie theaters, restaurants. Outside of downtown were residential areas, and no malls or other shopping centers. Wynnewood center, one of the oldest shopping centers, wasn't built until 1949.

I stay in dallas and this is a Sunday morning, he passed the church house and the parking lot was full. Let this had been any other day like a Monday. Non stop people + traffic

Downtown Dallas be live on the weekends especially in deep Ellum and Main Street. I'm Dallas native but I often the street lights in downtown always throw me off

Just got done watching the Atl drive through. I know that Dallas has a more populated combined* statistical metro population the Atlanta, but it just looks far smaller. The Atlanta Skyscrapers alone makes Dallas look like a secondary city..I personally think it's because Atlanta has a larger urban area.

All of you people complain, but I think this is great. I like in DC and it sucks to have so many people fit into a sardine can of a city. Dallas is my kind of place if its like this.

If this was shot on a summer afternoon, I'd say it looks empty because it's too hot to go outside. Lots of people use the tunnel and bridge system that connects a lot of the downtown buildings so you can avoid going out in the heat. Also, downtown Dallas is mostly a business center so people are in their offices, not out on the sidewalk. It gets pretty dead downtown after 6 when everyone's gone home. 31:20--the infamous Dallas Book Depository on the right. If you'd continued straight instead of turning left you'd have followed the Kennedy motorcade route to its completion.

Driving in Dallas is a walk in the park without annoying taxis. But try DC driving is a pain in the ass with the Biggest Traffic Congestion in the USA and those red taxis lol and yes yes yes even on Sunday Mornings.

Everybody will be Uptown Dallas because it's more vibrant and busy. Going downtown is like a very quiet so u don't see a lot of people.

That was interesting but brutal! So many parking lots but nowhere interesting for people to walk and so few sidewalk patios to enjoy a drink or a meal. I can't believe how unwalkable it is and how few people there are in the downtown core. The buildings give nothing back to the city and make the area seem inhospitable. I would see no reason to get out of the car, in that city! All those ugly parking lots, man, that's a killer! Good work on the video though, I watched it all in horror! lol

I was there a few years ago and yes, it is like you say. The upside to this, though, (for a JFK buff) is that when I decided to walk down to Dealey Plaza on a sunny Sunday morning, I had the plaza all to myself ! It was EMPTY and rather eerie, as if time had frozen ... like a Twilight Zone episode ... Unforgettable !
