Absolutely yes. You will know that it is good driving practice to take up a dominant position to make clear your intent in exactly this situation when driving a car. Getting out early when there are parked cars on both sides of the road allows you to both see further ahead and conveys your intent to move ahead. It is always a dialogue of course and anyone should be prepared to cede way to others if the situation dictates but it has been very well established that timid cyclists who 'hide' at the edges of the road are far more likely to experience close passes than those like me who cycle in the middle of the lane until I consider it safe to move over to allow vehicles to pass by at a time and place of my choice. This is just as true for oncoming vehicles in narrow gaps as it is for overtaking vehicles. And the Highway Code (Rule 67) appears to support the view that taking a dominant position to allow for moving either left or right to avoid danger is the correct course of action: "Watch out for obstructions in the road, such as drains, service covers and potholes, positioning yourself so you can move to the left (as well as to the right) to avoid them safely Take care when passing parked vehicles, leaving enough room (a door’s width or 1 metre) to avoid being hit if a car door is opened, and watch out for pedestrians stepping into your path" The chap in this video who you praise is in my opinion cycling dangerously. If there is more than six inches between his left hand and the door mirror of the blue and white cars I would be very surprised. Much, much too close. If, instead of you there had been a bully in a van or wide 4x4 such as in the following clip, he would have been waving his hand in anger rather than gratitude.

Quick Q - is it safe/considerate for me to coast behind a HGV at a safe distance, who's max speed is 60 mph, (excluding when other junctions are merging onto mw where I'll go into middle lane) in lefthand lane instead of trying to maintain 70 and overtaking slower HGVs? I'm unsure whether 60mph is too slow and affects the flow of traffic. I've picked up some really useful stuff on here - thank you.

The kids on electric bikes are not a significant problem here in Christchurch. The people who can afford electric bikes seem in most cases to do the right thing, although their lane positioning can sometimes be a bit questionable for the speed they are travelling. The problem areas are cyclists using the footpath even when a separated cycle lane has been built and riding the wrong way up streets including one way streets. Riding the wrong way on a cycleway there there is one provided on both sides of the road and the direction is clearly marked. And cyclists not stopping at stop signs and red lights, even where the cycle lanes have lights giving priority to cyclists they regularly jump the curb to use the pedestrian crossing or keep going when traffic has a green turn signal on. Equally as poor is the behaviour of E-scooter riders who do all the same things as cyclists with even less road experience and less protection, helmets are not mandatory on scooter and are often travelling at 30+kmph on the footpath and shared zones weaving through pedestrians. I am in favour of environmentally friendly personal transport devices, but their users need to be responsible and follow the guidelines for safe use (there are no laws in place at this time).

Some drivers seem to think that they have priority just because the cars are on my side of the road and literally drive at me! 1:42 personally I wouldn't filter here. Traffic is still moving, however I would position myself in the right of my lane close to the center line. This is because if someone isn't paying attention, I can see them in my mirrors & filter if I wanted to, making an easy escape for me. I'd also crate space between myself & the cars in front. Nothing wrong with filtering, just knowing the risk vs non ricks are key. Filtering while a car wants to change lines, while the lane is clear in his path. Clearly shows something up ahead is blocking that lane & you should move into the right lane & let him in front. Just my thoughts on this tho at a dayly motorbike rider.

optimally, drivers would space themselves appropriately as they approached the problem, and then merge in the last hundred feet before the cones. otherwise you get people jumping queue and saying "but I'm merging in turn" which turns the whole thing into a shoving match. really, I'd like to see no overtaking zones the last hundred yards before every merge.

Never trust a turn signal. Saw one tonight. Tesco roundabout near me. I’m going ahead….car from Tesco (to my immediate left) indicating left…so I could assume I can keep on going without waiting…🤔 But the position of that car is dubious……and driving in a ponderous way-like those old Volvos of yesteryear. I slow down, and sure enough the car turns right-with it’s left signal still going….so it goes in front of me I guess if we had hit, that driver would deny they were indicating left. Cutting corners happens all the time here. Often have to slow down & let them complete their turn before I reach the line.

I think the cyclist at 5:15 could do better; He needs to be out of that door zone at that speed. This being so, there isn't enough room for Ashley to come though. One could argue that the cyclist has priority since he started passing his obstruction way back but it's ambiguous, best assume no-one has priority. Not everyone is Ashley though and some will try and 'thread the needle'. Take command of the duration by anticipating and taking primary before this situation.

@@ashley_neal There's obstructions on both sides of the road, I think best to take it as no-one has priority. Interesting, the way you have your driver enter the intersection in clip 11 (7:10) would be illegal in Australia, although many do it anyway.
