I'm the cyclist in clip 11 starting at 7:15 and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with your analysis but I think it reflects a learning point for yourself if I may. I'm glad to see that some of your viewers have it on the money too in the comments. I gave you some reflections I made in the initial email but you probably don't have that to hand when recording audio. Everything about the car's position, from a left position at the junction he joins from, selecting the lane to take the first left, and maintaining a position to take the second left predicts against him taking the right turn he did. The learning point for yourself is that the speed of cyclists is very dependant on the gradient and you need to be aware of gradient changes to predict cyclists' actions. I do not in-fact accelerate down the hill but maintain my speed by coming off the power completely and gently applying the brakes. Further, for the duration of the road I am not in the blind spot (I recall seeing the face of the driver). as he brakes for the speed hump, at which point I am not in the blind spot. Though I was suspicious of the car as it emerged from the junction, the point at which I realise the risk increases is when he continues to brake after the zebra crossing and it is at the point the he brakes hard that I enter the blind spot which is the key point of my reflection. My road position, being to the right of him is good if he turns left or continues straight and communicates to following vehicles my intention that they should not be overtaking at this point. Your comment that I have "very little road sense" is I think deeply unfair and represents a lapse in the integrity of your analysis.
@ashley_neal
@ashley_neal 4 года назад
Thanks a lot for first of all sending in the clip and secondly your response. I knew that you wouldn’t be overjoyed with my analysis but unfortunately it still stands. When you mention gradient in relation to predict a cyclists actions I shake my head in disbelief. Just use your brakes more! If I had a collision because I was too close to someone I wouldn’t dream of saying “I was going downhill” Too often the road cyclist has little else on their mind other than rate of travel, and too few pick their time to use speed at sensible times. You even admit in your own comment when risk was increasing, but at that same point alarm bells had been ringing in my head for a while. If you had concerns about the emerging vehicle at the start and rode how you did, it ratifies my quote of “Little road sense” I expect you to also to be less than happy with my response, but sometimes what seems to be a harsh word can teach us most. Please see my words in the way they are meant, which is to increase road safety and reduce risk for yourself and everyone who reads this. Kindest regards, Ashley.

The father and son incident was good , the son was speeding towards the cyclist , the dad explained you can't see what might come over the hill towards you, and there was a solid white line , stating this to stay in between the lane lines.

I don't think Jarrod was doing it on purpose, therefore it's not a must get in front incident. A lot of drivers fixate on the things that they are most scared of and see little else. This is the most likely cause of this incident.👍🏼
@gixxerman69
@gixxerman69 4 года назад
@@ashley_neal Fair point. To be fair, most MGIF incidents that I have witnessed are not malicious, but the result of drivers just not thinking or planning ahead. They see a cyclist and immediately think they will be travelling slowly, therefore they need to be in front of them. Almost a case target fixation it seems. On the rare occaisions that I have discussed the MGIF with them, most were unaware that they had done something silly. I did have one very baffling one though. A driver passed me (30 limit and I was doing about 20) and immediately after passing me they turned left into a side road causing me to have to brake quite sharply (a classic left hook). It was such a bad bit of driving I thought a word or two was in order. Having asked why they overtook so near to when they were going to turn, the driver simply replied that they "wanted to get past me". I explained that what they did was dangerous and pointless, but they just couldn't see it, and just kept repeating that they wanted to get past me. Oh and to ice the cake, so to speak, they couldn't resist spouting out the tired old road tax nonsense. I left it there as some people, it seems, are beyond help.
@Asfixiator7

My biggest worry with cyclists "holding people up" is at least 1 person will be impatient and almost cause an accident if a bigger vehicle is in front. I will happily sit behind a cyclist for miles on end but as soon as another vehicle turns up I start over thinking.

It’s not so much the concept, more the way all ALR Smart Motorways are built following the trial build (M42). The original build and concept had refuges every 800m, and automatic camera monitoring throughout, so any issues were picked up within seconds and controls put out. AFTER the trial, to save money, refuges every 2KM, large stretches not covered with ANY camera, and few automatic cameras, so issues can have resulted in multiple collisions before controls come in.

@@paulcollyer801 Honestly I think there needs to be some important changes to the law and driving culture in the UK to make them work safely also. First and foremost on that list would be implementing a law similar to Germany mandating the creation of an emergency lane upon joining stationary traffic. In effect this would mean something like lane 1 must form a queue as far to the left as possible when traffic stalls, similarly to the right for all other lanes thus creating a gap between lanes 1 and 2 for EV's. This would in effect remove the need for a dedicated hard shoulder for emergency access since the space is created dynamically when traffic stalls enough for it to be needed since ultimately this only really becomes essential when traffic stalls and queues bumper to bumper. Blue lights and exemptions are usually adequate to make progress in flowing traffic but a complete stall is another matter. Granted this still doesn't solve the issue of providing a safe space for sudden breakdowns where even limping a relatively short (

The cyclist didn't accelerate both of them are on the brakes (check his levers), he knew the danger he was not going up the side of it. You can't completely stop every time a driver could do something crazy, the car turned right from the left lane without indicating (until after the turn) Cyclist slowed and left himself enough room to be able to avoid the car. Taking it to its logical extreme... If you were cycling along a major road and a car was waiting on the minor would you stop just in case the driver decided to pull out on top of you? you would have put yourself in that danger by cycling in front of him. Clip 13 - Malory could see a junction ahead but matched speed just behind a large vehicle that was turning in this would make her completely invisible to any car that would be waiting to pull out, didn't she put herself in that position like the cyclist in clip 11?

7:37 i think the skoda knew what he was doing and saw the cyclist the whole way as this was a one way street he had the wrong lane to turn right, no indicator and sudden steering all to just get ahead of the cyclist. im a keen cyclist also and wouldve been just as aware but to be fair the cyclist had no idea the skoda was going to turn until.. he did.. suddenly i guess i dont know how to end that in english

9:08 for clip 13 is a common mistake. The driver pulling out is only seeing the car pulling in, which obscures the car behind it (the cam car). We need to be thinking about what traffic can hide. Could it hide a bike, motorcycle, or in a different scenario, a pedestrian (?).

When you are taught to drive you should be taught if you think it's not safe, don't go. If you can't be sure it's clear then, in that case don't go. Yes you might miss a gap, but you've also potentially saved a hell of a lot of insurance money.

Lots of interesting and thought provoking clips and commentary - great selection. I think Jarrod is my favourite. Feel sorry for the Polo driver. I wonder if the young lady who lost her wing mirror knew about acceleration sense and engine braking going down that hill? I'd like also if I may to share something that happened the other day. I was out in my wife's Fiesta doing my usual trying to make safe progress within the speed limit. I had a young lad in another Fiesta behind me. He was following close and I could see from the scowl he had on him that he was getting impatient. Sure enough he went tearing past at the first marginal opportunity, cut in front and then roared off onto the dual carriageway going straight across three lanes of traffic. Instead of getting wound up I thought "driving fail" and the thought made me smile. I had to think twice though a little further up the road where I made a mistake myself. Nothing too drastic but a little lapse meant I went a bit off line and had to correct sharply enough for my daughter in the back to notice. She said "but daddy, I thought you watched Ashley Neal?" We both had to agree that I might well have made it onto driving fail myself in that instance.

I think as other comments have pointed out that the criticism of the cyclist is incorrect. The road positioning and observation of the other vehicle is what is at fault in the clip, and the cyclist has not been given information they can use to anticipate the driver’s next action. The other driver should have seen where the cyclist was. It takes time to remove yourself from a vehicle’s blind spot when they have put you there. The vehicle pulling onto the roundabout from the supermarket is the opposite. An argument can be made that the vehicle waiting to exit the supermarket should anticipate vehicles driving fast across a roundabout that handles through traffic, especially where they have waited and looked for so long. It is a misjudgement of speed. The fact that the mini is speeding doesn’t change that it should still be given-way to. To criticise one of these without any criticism of the other is unfair.

Ashley, I have seen and been involved in many near misses on roundabouts and I would suggest that the advice should be DO NOT EVER TRY TO OVERTAKE OR UNDERTAKE on roundabouts. One should expect that people may change lanes on roundabouts, they may not be familiar with the road layout. I have seen and been involved in many near misses on roundabouts. One often sees people in cars having nearly misses trying to pass articulate trucks on roundabout where the truck trailer unavoidably drift into their adjacent lane and the car is probably in the truck drivers blind spot. One of my pet hates is where people try to pass as they are turning right when I am going straight on, on what are essentially single lane roundabouts.

The clip with the mini flying over a roundabout, I get that all the time while driving my work truck. Obviously a truck is slower at accelerating because its heavy and on roundabouts where there is no entrance onto the roundabout from my 12 oclock, people will just keep their foot down and come flying up behind me while I'm turning left. It's even worse when the view down the road from the right is restricted because of trees or a hedge and all you can see is maybe 20 feet of road at that entrance to the roundabout. But as my instructor said "if they don't stop they'll hit you and that's on them, they were not on the roundabout when you pulled out so you did nothing wrong. You give way to whats on the roundabout not whats coming up to the roundabout"

The absolute arrogance of the truck cutting in at the last minute forcing the car to take evasive action borders on 'driving without due care'. There was ample time and a huge gap behind the car to get in for the exit, but no, he must get one more vehicle ahead. Totally pointless as he has to stop at the lights with the traffic. The car driver however as Ashley says does himself no favours by losing his temper. Far better to have complained to the company and sent your clip in to them (and the dvsa) so they could educate their driver etc. The lorry will no doubt have multiple cameras that would back up the car driver's evidence,. Unfortunately with all that horn blowing and actually trying to keep the truck out with his road position, he has lost the moral high ground. The horn means 'I am here'. The truck driver knows you are there because he has deliberately decided to carve you up, so all the anger means nothing to him. Before anyone says the truck driver may not know the area etc, the incident was at Darford and the company are based at Purfleet a few miles away. The fact the driver exited at the leftmost exit of a multi lane slip shows he knew the area. Possibly as a bulk vehicle he is doing multiple short trips in a day and is frustrated at the traffic impeding him. Not worth arguing with a truck, they know they will win.

I really dislike this culture of knowing fine well how to avoid a situation (say, seeing someone joining a motorway for example) and drivers speeding up and not adjusting their speed to allow a smooth join from the other vehicle.....and then blasting their horn! It is completely unnecessary and the more I see of dash cam footage allegedly showing ANOTHER vehicle at fault.....it is actually the dash cammer that is the bad driver.

Coming from a lifelong cyclist, the rider in clip 11 should have anticipated the possibility of the skoda driver doing what they did. However the Skoda driver should have known the cyclist was there. Golden rules for safe cycling. Asume everyone is an idiot, always assume you haven't been seen, don't rely on signals, expect the unexpected.However, elevation IS a real factor while cycling for obvious reasons so drivers should be aware of this

Definitely the last one. The "camera driver" clearly drove too fast past the line of cars when he, or she, had no vision past the first car. Slowing down, looking on the left AND "kissing" right is a necessity here. This way, you are never surprised. Plus, "kissing" left allows a potential driver in one of these parked cars to spot you earlier.

I think you forget to tell something about clip #10: It's also illegal to use your horn when there is no dangerous situation. The aggressive honking was not only irritating for other drivers, it could also scare someone to do something dangerous and cause an accident. I don't know why that guy was aggressive about that tiny mistake of the truck driver, but he should learn to handle his anger. You can be disappointed that someone made a mistake like that, but when you get angry because of that tiny mistake you have a real problem. What is the next step? Brake check? Cutting someone off? I would have slowed down to give him some space. My first driving lesson on the highway an Audi driver cut me off a little. I just lifted my foot of the gas pedal and let him take some room. Then I speeded up to the normal speed again. No drama and we both were on our way.
