The most annoying and dangerous thing is when emerging from a slip road is the driver who makes an effort to close your gap up by speeding up !

Yep, although even worse are those that dawdle on the slip road at 40-50mph and you can see 70mph traffic coming up behind you. The amount of times I've had to floor it onto the carriageway to get out of trouble - one particular junction on the M5 near me is so bad for people doing this.

The minute I see somebody doing this, I instantly move out into the lane to prevent them from doing so. This is especially true when it's busy, when causing a slip road to come to a standstill is dangerous.

I’ve been thinking about the updates to the Highway Code a lot…and I’ve (currently) come to the conclusion that stopping to let pedestrians cross while exiting a roundabout seems to cause more problems than it solves, unless there are zero other cars at the roundabout at that moment. I have not yet had a time where doing the right thing has felt entirely safe. Drivers behind me are just not anticipating this behaviour. I desperately want to do the right thing, and want to protect pedestrians as best I can, but I’m not yet sure this update to the code is the best way to do that.

Not sure its the "right thing" if it doesnt feel safe (I am agreeing with you), indeed even Ashley seems to have changed his stance on this and now seems to recognise that its not always the best thing to do (this was confirmed by the DVSA within weeks of the change to the HC).

@@dwaggys3322 Exactly - there are so few times where it is safe that I don’t think it’s a positive change. I actually think the change causes more confusion. Worst case scenarios: 1. pedestrians who know the rule may expect it and drivers don’t do it 2. a driver may not do it safely and the driver behind may crash into them, putting everyone, including the pedestrians at greater risk.

I'm of a strong opinion that any roundabout that needs this feature (or even ALL roundabouts if we wanted to) should just get zebra crossings. There's a tiny number of roundabouts I've encountered with them and they work perfectly. No issue for pedestrians or driver or for the driver behind the vehicle stopping as everyone knows what's going on. It's very explicit. You can see the zebra crossing and everyone and their dog knows how they work. As a motorcyclist I choose to ignore the current addition to the Highway Code for personal safety. I rather not create a situation myself where it's easier for people to run me over. Plus, it still dangerous for the pedestrian as the car driver behind might choose to overtake me (as I don't occupy as much space on the road and it would likely be very possible to slide in).

Just carry on as you are. I think it's ludicrous to stop to let people walk across. You are more likely to get hit from behind or someone to overtake you and run them over@! Also by stopping you might be causing problems round the roundabout. I don't think it's ever a hood idea to stop on a roundabout.

Merging is about planning. looking early enough and picking the gap . The HGV is likely to be on a constant speed ( especially in a 50mph roadworks ) which makes it easier to assess. A touch more gas earlier up the slip road to get up to 50 and the car would have slipped in nicely.

99% of the time I would agree, no issues doing that with my car, my brother's however is fairly gutless certainly on uphill merges and sometimes a little help is nice, it's not like a huge adjustment is needed most of the time.

As the driver there, the two lorries were muuuch closer than they appeared on camera. At the time, I'm pretty sure I was cruising at 50 MPH most of the way down the slip road.

The HGV is likely to be doing 55 or so, they never do 50. See it all the time when I slow for a 50 set of roadworks and they just blast past...

fair point. I'm always looking for my gap as soon as I have visibility, and I actually prefer, if allowed, to be going a little faster, because it's easier to drop back a little to get in the gap than to surge ahead.

in Oregon's highway code, it does say that a person already on a motorway must allow a person approaching on a slip road to merge. of course, the local police officer I asked about the requirement to indicate at the end of a merge (yes, it is required, here) said it even better. "you're not allowed to run them off the road."

Probably didn't see him, even if they watch the video they will probably think they did everything right. Bikers fault for being on the correct side of the road? Looking for somewhere to flytip or somewhere to use as a toilet or did they move the cones and drive through I wonder? Obviously driving safely was low down on the cars priority list.

He was going a bit fast for the conditions and I’m not sure reversing actually made any difference as the van had virtually stopped by then. Good idea though. I think I’d just have braked hard and squeezed as far left as possible. If you look there is a flat muddy area to move over to.

I was taught as an American driver to do your best to fit into traffic and get up to speed when merging, but ALSO to try to make space for people who are merging if I'm already on the highway. If traffic is pretty solid in the near lane but there's space in the far lane, the polite thing to do is to get over so that the people merging have plenty of room. If you can't get over, then slowing slightly to make a gap in front of you for someone to slot into is the next best thing.

Absolutely agree about joining from a slip road. It should be like a team effort, with everyone doing what they can to keep traffic moving. I've had arguments with people from the 'those on the carriageway have right of way' brigade. Having said that, it seemed to me that in this case the cam car could have been further forward, and could have found the middle spot between the lorries, with just a little more speed.

While yes, those on the carriageway technically have right of way, with a slip road, if there isn't a gap, vehicles NEED to create one. That's because slip roads end and it's not like you can just stop completely on a slip road and give way without causing danger.

@@lauriethefish2470 As Ashley is often at pains to point out, there's no such thing as 'right of way' on the road. There is 'priority', but even that comes with conditions. I've had cars stop in front of me on slip roads. Quite scary. But I've not been too close, and I've been able to slip past and find my gap.

I want to know what the other side should be called, to be devils advocate. bit of fun here if a lorry has to brake from 60 to 30 for that car to join the faster motorway, then the lorry behind will slam on the brake from 60 to 25 most likely and that follows suit all the way back till a break in the traffic or the last car has to brake to 0. stopping is way worse on a motorway then a short slipway. lorry was 100% right to keep going as he has to think about people on the faster road behind him rear ending him or any braking he might do may cause others to slam on the brakes to come down to his speed. alternatively the lorries could of all just go into the middle lane and then everyone can join the motorway easier at whatever speed they wanted 40 or 50mph. but in truth in this video we all can agree there was loads of room for that car, he just wanted a mile long gap to join in remember I just said that to be devils advocate. bit of fun. road driving can never be perfect what in life ever is the videos best advice at @6:50 you should never merge if you are going to cause anyone to slow down, stop, swerve or sear.

Regarding the merging onto a motorway clip. If the driver speed up to a speed that was greater than the lorries, there wouldn't have been a problem. So many people don't seem to want to get to a suitable speed for a motorway whilst they're still on the slip road. Same for leaving the motorway, so many people slow down before they're on the slip road.

I might have said this on a previous upload. I worked with an ex fireman who was a truck driver. His theory was that most people are conditioned to just see cars and other vehicles don't register mentally.

I kinda agree, as a truck driver myself. And people don't learn about other vehicles, either. It would be nice if people at least knew that when overtaking a truck, then slowing right after that we need a lot more time, especially if we have a load on board because we might be braking, but the load isn't and still wants to continue, so makes us slow down and stop that much slower.

Another excellent video. At 07:59 I think the cyclist is invisible behind the Mini's A-pillar. It shows the importance of the driver shifting his/her head to look around both sides of the A-Pillar when approaching a junction!

Totally this. I also think many motorists are hardwired to only look for motor vehicles and lorries. They don’t seem to be capable of observing cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

@@TheGiff7 PSNI posted a great tip about this. On road trips with the family, have a competition to see who can spot the most cyclists or bikers. Then, when they grow up and start driving, they will already be in the habit of scanning for bikers and cyclists.

Agreed - I had a painful altercation with a car bonnet due to this. The driver said I was in her blind spot - hopefully she's since made the leap to move her head to compensate (and also slows down before entering roundabouts). She had the good grace to be very sorry, anyway!

I dunno, I drive manual and teach automatic. Assuming you know your car, I think slamming it into reverse on a manual is quicker. In an automatic you've got to wait for the car itself to engage the gear.

The amount of times I've been honked for letting a pedestrian cross according to the new laws...just the other day I stopped to let someone cross at a junction and the guy behind me slammed his horn on. Credit to the pedestrian here, but she stopped before crossing, stormed over to the guy that honked me and gave him a right earful. It was glorious.

The driver who fails to anticipate that the car in front might stop at a pedestrian crossing point to allow a pedestrian to cross in not just a clown but a dangerous clown.

For me on that sliproad clip, the dash camera deliberately didn't take that gap properly. There was plenty of room but they failed to match speed (which they clearly could do since they sped.up once they emerged!)

For the mini at @ 8:00 , that's almost certainly an A pillar blind spot. You HAVE to move your head around approaching junctions and crossings.

Yep, I got taken out on a roundabout for that reason. The girl had a quick look at the roundabout, thought it was clear and didn't bother slowing down or moving her head before she entered it - if she had slowed, I'd have emerged from behind her A-pillar. People check for car-sized objects and above, but often forget about the people-sized ones.

At 9:00 Is a classic example of my dislike for the new changes regarding giving way to pedestrians. I feel it puts pressure on pedestrians to make the crossing quickly to not inconvenience traffic and in this case they're running quickly in response to the horn.

At around 2:20 with the unhelpful HGV for the cammers emerge onto the motorway. To me it looked like the cammer had more room in front of them to utilise and put more distance between themselves and the unhelpful HGV behind. We don't know what speed the cammer was doing and yes I saw the 50 mph speed limit signs on the slip road. But I might have been tempted to temporarily exceed that 50 mph limit and accelerate a bit more briskly to be further away from the rear HGV and then once merged, ease off slightly if above 50 mph. And bear in mind speedos often under read, plus speed limits often have that tolerance. And there was no sign warning of safety cameras. I'm not advocating speeding but in a situation like that I would say it might be safer to temporarily exceed the limit given the situation.

Totally, many times I have been on the speed limit and a situation arises where I think I'd be better off escaping forwards, I will go as fast as it takes for a short period and then brake back to the speed limit. It's saved me from getting into a mess when passing slip roads and several cars are needing space that isn't there, I give them that space and let them get on with it behind me.

Cammer here! The gap in front was a lot smaller in reality due to how dashcams work. At the time, I was doing 50 MPH if memory serves, that's real mph not speedo mph.

Just checked the registration plate for the black Vauxhall, R28JLJ, following the learner driver and, according to DVLA, it should be a white Citroen. Checked 9th April at 14.47.

Yep, white petrol Citroën DS3, I'd checked too. Could be the clip is old and they've changed the car registration recently, but judging by the driving attitude, more likely a (badly) cloned plate.

2:19 fair enough in this case of knocking off cruise control for a few sec as it is a 50. But when you're on a 70 keep in mind most trucks are cruising at 55 so you can easily use that extra speed to get past and stop them catching rather than dawdling.

Great catch in the first clip with the quick reverse to stop a collision with the van. I am a new Tesla owner (1000 miles) and yesterday I was driving on single track roads in Scotland, where stop-and-reverse is a frequent requirement. As I learn the vehicle, I am finding that I will stop and reverse towards a passing place behind me considerably quicker than most people can react with a clutch and gearbox. With practice and muscle memory, this reaction should only get faster.

Living in the Devon countryside where single track roads are everywhere, I can confirm, it's almost always the white vans who travel too fast for the visibility. The problem is they're on piece work and if they don't travel fast they won't be given the jobs.

I think that the guy merging on the M5 should have gained a little more speed to gain more space in front of the HGV but the HGV should have helped by backing off a little bit and helping out.

If you live somewhere with narrow lanes like in that first clip, you have to learn to react like that as there are so many drivers who will zoom round blind bends at breakneck speed. I’ve never had to reverse to avoid an accident before, that’s impressive

The merge onto the M5 should have gone a bit quicker and gone to the middle of the space. The HGV should not have to slow down for a car to merge although if there was space to do so he could have moved over, but it looked too busy to do so.

That very last clip: If you are going to make a turn (especially across oncoming traffic) make sure your exit road is actually clear before you commit! In this case, the exit road was coned off. But could also be pedestrians crossing (and remember the new HC rules for that) or a traffic tailback up to the junction. Assess early!

Clip at 9.00 regarding giving way to the pedestrians... in my view giving way here just increases risk for all involved. The camera car is at risk of being shunted from behind from a vehicle who is either not expecting or, cannot see from their position the pedestrians, so in this scenario the camera car would be pushed forward into where the pedestrians are crossing! Also if you notice how the pedestrians feel the need to move quickly across, again increasing their risk of slipping/tripping.

Don't be silly. If the cammer was at risk of being shunted from behind then that means he was going too fast for the conditions. Presumably using your logic you don't stop for pedestrians at Zebra crossings where the rules are exactly the same. Pedestrians have priority at both exit and entrance junctions at roundabouts and you should give way to them just as you would at a Zebra Cross. Pedestrians are increasingly expecting drivers to obey the Highway code and so some may well step out in front of you. if you were to hit such a pedestrian while breaking the law (and once they have a foot on the carriageway then it is the law) then you would be in serious trouble. Do the save and sensible thing: slow down and give way to pedestrians at all pedestrian crossing points.

I was riding along Aintree Lane crossing Valley Road on to Copplehouse Lane. A woman in an Escort decided to go as the lights started to change, was turning right from Copplehouse Lane. She hit me in the middle of the Kirkby bound lanes and I came to a full stop next to a police car at the traffic lights on Copplehouse Lane. They looked at my unmoving "corpse" lit up their lights and went after the Escort which was motoring down towards Kirkby. They pulled her at the M57 roundabout. She denied all knowledge of seeing or hitting me, she was not drunk, she couldn't exit the driver's door because the car was so badly damaged. Her offside front light cluster was smashed, bonnet, o/f/wing bent out and the driver's door twisted. When she saw the damage she complained that someone had done it to her car, this got a really good laugh in court. I got two months in hospital and three months of rehab, along with a wrecked knee that still causes issues over 40 years later. Some drivers only take in what they want to, every driver should have to ride a motorcycle for at least a year and sit an extended retest every 5 years. Passing the L test means that you are safe but not that you are a good driver. Advanced courses are the way to get better.

On the merging in the M5 clip; I do think it's mostly up to the people merging in to find a spot to merge in, equal or slightly greater speed than traffic already driving there and then merge in. Honestly to me it didn't look like the lorry did anything wrong. The passenger car had power to spare, but it wasn't used. In my opinion thats a far greater mistake than the lorry not slowing down. Gotta remember that asking already moving traffic to slow down for your merge has an echoeing effect on everything behind it. At least when its busy it does. This is how we get holdups and jams on highway junctions

Similar happened to me once, but the sprinter went up the bank and fell on to its side. Funny thing, the brakes don’t work so well that way, so I had to drive backwards faster till the van slithered to a halt.

That first clip the van, what an awesome save by the viewer. I don't think I could of done that. For one I'm in an auto and two I have 290BHP so would of prob panicked put in a hedge in reverse, lol. Supposed to drive and be able to stop on your side of the road in the distance you can see. On a single track road you need to half that distance. I drive a similar road on my commute and faced the same but the oncoming car did stop in time but the BMW behind the oncoming car skidded and almost went into the car coming the other way, the BMW driver defo left more than one skid mark at least, lol.

Giving way to pedestrians exiting a roundabout is so complex, not only do you need to know what's behind. But you also have a knock on effect on the people joining all around you. One of the worst rule changes ever made imo. Giving way entering a roundabout different story makes total sense, same with junctions

Crossing the road at a roundabout is so complex. Giving way to pedestrians is comparatively simple, it starts with reducing your speed, after that it is much simpler - admittedly multi-lane roundabouts make things much more difficult.

My thoughts on the clip of the car merging onto the slip road is that I would have made it clear I was having that space between the two trucks, and then created my safe space to the forward one if I was unable to move out into lane 2. But also if it had been the truck merging, they would have forced their way in whether room was given or not.

Where I live in Wales that’s an everyday occurrence. Get delivery drivers with all wheels locked up slithering straight for you, you get a sixth sense to keep your hand near the gear lever and hope your car has a syncro mesh on reverse gear. !

About “you haven’t been seen”; I live in a place with lots of corners and roundabouts. With cars these days and their safe thick A-pillars bicyclists, pedestrians and even cars and trucks can be hidden when their taking the roundabout movement aligns perfectly with your forward movement. I have started to move my head like an impatient parrot, from left to right, because I had two occasions where a car or cyclist scared the hell out of me that way. Conversely, I take any roundabouts with more caution. Did they see me? I don’t plunge myself on the roundabout and search for eye contact or at least look for the driver’s head and which direction it is pointing. When I was younger I have been an absolute pr*ck by driving fast on a roundabout, never braking if my side was clear, and being mad when people would get in front of me not giving way. Luckily I sold that car which made me do that and learned how stupid it is to ASSume and TAKING way in stead of giving.

I think with roundabouts it shouldn't be about whether the other driver has seen you. As you shouldn't be impacting them at all. The question is can you join the roundabout with enough space to the other driver without having to slow them down or be startled. If yes - join the roundabout, if not - wait for the opportunity. The more you use the vehicle the more you're jn touch with how quickly you can merge onto a road/roundabout and hence calibrate your decision making using this data.

@@kiradotee knowing if you have been seen can be a life saver with the situation I mean by it: even if you are already on the roundabout and others must give way before driving onto the roundabout, it may be that you have been hidden behind their A-pillar and they see an empty roundabout they can safely drive onto. Here we have lots of roundabouts with cycling paths on the outer perimeter which have priority. They are used to cycle without stopping because cars always brake for them. Since I’m a cyclist too I don’t assume a driver has seen me because that curve I take can line up exactly with their eyes, or they can be distracted by other things. It’s good to read the actions of the car before assuming they will stop. Do you see them brake hard enough? Can you see their eyes? Are they traveling slow enough to brake on time?

7:48 you literally can't report this where I live. Unless it gets posted on social media and gains significant traction there, they won't do anything even with video evidence clearly showing a readable license plate. There's been a few instances of people driving very fast and posting it on social media or people being recorded pushing other people off the road, but that's attempted murder level stuff. Anything less than that just gets ignored, not even a citation sent through the mail.

8:03 when you're cycling around a roundabout, you have to be aware that motor vehicles are looking further around the roundabout because they're looking for other fast moving vehicles, the to best things that I've found to do, is be prepared for them to pull out, and stare at the driver as you approach them - when you make eye contact, you are far more noticeable.

So I have asked this before on the BBB channel, with no credible reply from anyone. In my opinion, and going by wording in the Highway Code, Road Junctions and Roundabouts are two different things in definition. Therefore the ruling on pedestrians does not apply at a roundabout surely? As far as I am aware you’re not meant to suddenly stop on a roundabout to allow a person to cross the exit you intend to use (Unless of corse they’re in the road and making their way over, or a zebra crossing is marked). Therefore can you please clarify where you’re taking your definitions from on this matter? While I appreciate it may be a nice thing to do, I’m quite confident I have no legal obligation to do so at roundabout.

It does not satisfactorily cover why the 7 rules for roundabouts (184-190) are a separate section from the 14 for junctions (170-183). Nor why rule 187 "watch out for and give plenty of room to" a variety of users including "pedestrians who may be crossing the approach and exit roads", is short of the instruction to "give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross" in rule 170, if roundabouts should be considered junctions. My impression is that the DVSA has spotted this ambiguity and doesn't know what to do about it; that nobody really intended that rule 170 should apply to roundabouts, but nobody wants to say on record that it doesn't. I tend to agree with a lot of your viewers' reservations about giving way but would add a bit of nuance. At a mini-roundabout in a 20mph town centre, as you demonstrated in Formby last year, giving way to pedestrians is entirely natural to a considerate driver and rule 170 is empowering if anything. To apply rule 170 to roundabouts in non-residential areas with limits at 40 or 50mph, where many drivers will be taking the roundabout itself at 30, the culture shift is of a different order. The roundabout junctions of the Liverpool boulevards we often see you on fall somewhere in between. I suspect your DVSA media officer was conscious of all this and hoped to cover all bases with the call to exercise judgement and assess four criteria: presence of traffic following; speed of approach; body language and visibility of pedestrians and the clarity of their intention to cross or not. Maybe, given the ambiguity of the Highway Code itself, that was the only option, but it would be better to clear up at top level the ambiguity of which rules apply where: the DVSA should not have to rely on dictionary definitions to clarify its own code.

I do feel however and without any clarification in the Highway Code I would have a sticky conversation with my insurance company should I suddenly stop and have someone plough in to the back of me. Confident the opposing insurer would lean on mine under the proviso I’ve stopped suddenly without just cause and thus been partially, or fully to blame for the accident. On the flip side of that, you have over zealous police who will not understand the difference between should and must. Clarification is formally required in my opinion.

Interesting on the joining dual carriage way. The car ON the carriageway has right of way and the car joining has to give way. However if its a large/slow vehicle joining then giving them room doesnt hurt. If its busy help those joining. If its empty dont just assume when your joining that you will be given way to! I regularly have difficulty joining in my old Landrover but when its the other way round I am regularly forced to give way when it isnt necessary to force me to give way or even safe! The issue is many drivers dont think or pay proper attention!

Your viewer @02:00 should have accelerated gently and merged shortly forward of the centre of the gap. The A&B lorry did not close the gap and had left more than sufficient room for the merging car. This was evidenced by the camera car moving to the centre of the space after they had merged before changing lane. It is not tailgating if you put yourself there. Confidence issue? In the final clip, where did the car driver think they were going?

The driver joining from the slip road should have accelerated a bit more to get into the centre of the gap between the lorries, he had no problem accelerating after joining the carriageway, I think he is one of those drivers that doesn't accelerate on the slip road but waits until he gets on the main carriageway, there are an awful lot of drivers who do this and even brake on the slip road, I appreciate what you say about cooperation but in this case the problem was of his own making.

I had an accident once which luckily only ended up with cracked bumpers. I misjudged a slight downhill descent towards a car at a junction in icy conditions and must have slowly skidded about 50m in a very slow 8-9 secs. I just went into panic mode trying to stop instead of doing the now obvious and trying to reverse instead. It was a Christmas Eve too which now makes me extra cautious and I prefer not to drive on that day now if I can avoid it.

As a rider of motorcycles you learn pretty damn fast the "have they seen me" trait. The more vehicle you drive/ride/operate the more complete driver you are imho.

Complete driver. 😂 Definitely have enhanced observations after riding a motorbike. More than cyclists or car drivers. Potentially on par with buses and/or lorries.

Hmmm, judging from many clips on the usual suspect biker channels I have to doubt that. The anticipation and awareness skills of plenty of bikers on them are very much lacking. They are very good in rev bombing though.....

@@ArminGrewe I think that's more about the "vocal minority" or in the case of motorcyclists, the "visible minorty". The ones who actually want to live will indeed learn the skills required. If you're watching "biker" channels, I suspect a lot of them are about motorcycles performance/riding or the culture. How many educational motorcycling skill channels do you watch, like Ashley's channel on driving cars? I don't think I've stumbled across any bike channels like that other than for stunts

@@TheBeardedQuack hopefully it's a minority. The channels I'm referring to are the biker "dashcam" channels, so not really racers and the like. Many of the bikers on them are as bad as some of the drivers on the dashcam channels. Essentially riding into danger rather than mitigate it.

@2:23 there was a conversation about this by a lorry driver elsewhere on RU-vid; it was cut between he was in a lorry and it was the van's tough luck, basiclly he should have fitted in; and the fact the lorry had a clear lane to his right. I pointed out they were both crap. The van for not adjusting his speed better and the lorry for being downright ignorant.
