Gareway airport was originally WILLIAMS AFB and at one time was one of the largest pilot training air bases in the Air Force. The base opened just prior to WW-2 in the 1940's and closed in 1993 during a round of military base closings around the country. The older control tower was probably built in the 60's. This former airbase used to be very isolated from Phoenix and even Mesa. There was open desert and farmland prior to all the growth. When on the airport proper you can see some of the historic WW-2 hangers that are still standing.

Gateway Airport has major plans to build an entirely new terminal on the other side of the runways that will include jetways. This will probably happen in the next 10 or so years.
