This makes me "homesick" for the 1980's. Little did we know in many ways we were living in peak times. People back then or even 20 years ago wouldn't believe this country now. Makes you wonder where it'll be in another 20-40 years.
Whats FUNNY is THE PEOPLE ALLOWED this shit i got my DD214 and i go out 2x a month and we get groceries and stay at home i work from home now and dont go with the FLOW like the MAJORITY DO thats the problem not many will STEP UP and stop the shit we all have to come together and stop whats going on as far as BAD STUFF and there is PLENTY OF IT....this video is way before my time but my bf is a bit older then me and said the mid 90s where not bad either.
My God, look at that lineup at the movie theater- Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Stand by Me, The Fly, Karate Kid 2...in 2019 it's hard to find a movie that will be memorable 3 months later, let alone 33 YEARS later. What an awesome time.
@@fromthehaven94 I've heard that movie get a lot of praise. Many movies get a lot of praise every single year. Most of them fade out of memory, except the exceptional ones. We'll see where Parasite is in 35 years....
@@Doomzdayxx Well, being the first foreign language movie to win the best picture oscar gives it a leg up. And if you've got hulu, make plans to watch it immediately. The less you know about it going in, the better.
Born/raised in Columbus, Was a teenager in 86 in Columbus remember going to Northland mall, ate the Flying Tomato on 15th and High, bought my books at Longs, as a Freshman at OSU took classes in Hayes Hall, left Columbus in 93, this is Columbus I remember. Thank you!
Man, if you ever decide to part with this video, by all means let me know! I run a Columbus history site, and this is pure gold! You have really captured a treasure trove here.
Absolutely incredible and invaluable historical record of everyday Columbus, circa 1986. Truly and utterly grateful to the forward-looking gentleman that filmed this gem. I could watch for 1000 hours!
This is so cool to see. I wasn't alive in the 80's but i love so much about the 80's. Its so cool to see what my hometown looked like 14 years before i was born.
I graduated just a few months before this. Ohio State and Columbus have changed so much; it’s so corporate and huge (both OSU and the city itself). I’m glad you captured this glorious time.
As someone who went to OSU from 2009-2011 it’s crazy to me that during my time there this area on high street looked more similar to this video than it does now in 2022. They’ve changed it so much and taken away most of the character it used to have sadly.
Wow, it's like these two guys recorded this knowing they would post it to RU-vid in 35 years!! Well done. This is just a great watch for any of us who knew Columbus through the years.
I moved from Columbus 7 years ago. Getting hit hard with the nostalgia, especially the campus area before they started going corporate. It was quirky and seedy but still sort of safe in the 90s if you were careful.
Drove that same route a million times in the mid 80's. Miss those times I worked at the GD Ritzys at Morse Center 1986, Went back 2 years ago after being gone for 30 years, Unreal how much its changed. Sharon Woods used to be a nice area..
You should come back and drive Morse Rd. today. A lot more has changed. Funny your comment about Rax vs. Arby's as the site of the Rax you shot on Morse Rd. is now occupied by an Arby's. Gold Circle was bought by Kohl's, and most of the site of Northland Mall is now a Menard's. Sun TV became H.H. Gregg, which itself is now defunct. As a current (and long time) Columbus resident, thanks for the video.
I was 14 and have mixed feelings about this time because I had terrible parents but amazing friends that made life worth living, it was the best and worst of times.
I was there in the late 90's and through the entire 2000's. I had not yet set foot there in 1986 (grew up in the Mid-Atlantic before OSU), and this looks closer to how I remember it than it did on my last visit in 2021.
@@videoholicreturns well, thank you for posting. We all appreciate you for it. You transported us back in time and provided us a little piece of nostalgia. 💖
Thank you for this! I graduated 2 months after this was filmed. What a great way for me to show my OSU sophomore and future OSU, current HS junior what campus was like when I was there
Thanks for this video. Brings back many great memories.I lived on and near campus from '80 to '88. I was around Morse Road all the time too and remember nearly all these businesses. 0:23 I loved Sisters Chicken. Great tasting chicken and sides. Dave Thomas of Wendy's started Sisters. I wish I would have been able to make recordings like these but did not have a camcorder until '93.
I love how this video was recorded to see what has changed in Columbus from the way it was remembered in the past, and now I'm here to see what has changed in Columbus from the way I remembered it in the past.
I’m loving the 1986 radio play. Love this little historic gem of my native Columbus Ohio. *Edit* Also, I haven’t seen or thought of Rax in over 20 years. I’m 35 btw.
I was one when this video came out. I graduated from OSU first in 2008. I have seen it change so much since then. I cam back for my master's degree in 2011 and I was saddened at how much was different. The main library (where I was a work study employee) was completely renovated. The Ohio Union had changed. There were a ton of new residence halls.
What pains me to say is, this video doesn't look like that long ago to me. There early in the video on Morse Road, on one side of the street is Northland. Once upon a time on the other side of the street was an airport, Columbus North Airport. As a little kid we would sit in the parking lot and watch planes fly in and out. In the summer of 1969, fresh out of high school, I was a laborer, building apartments on Rt 161 near Cleveland Avenue. For lunch, we had to drive to Morse Road to find a any eatery, even a hamburger joint. Rt 161 was still halfway out in the country. As for the University area, I worked there for decades, mostly west of the Olentangy River as a delivery person. In my late teens I was a regular visitor to a three story campus bar called The Castle which had live music. I also ventured into the South Heidelberg which I think was on the corner of 9th and High. Sometimes we would travel down to the Beir Stube which I believe is still there, 50 years later. And yes, they spell it that way.
I used to go drinking at the Beir Stube during my first year at OSU - 1968-69. My roommate and I lived at Holiday House apartments, at the corner of 8th and Neil, so the Stube was very close for us!!
I had just scored my first apartment on City Park Avenue in German Village. Watching your video, I frequented a place on High Street called the Souvlaki Palace. George made the best gyros in the city. It was located just south of the Huntington Bank. So I think it’s the store with the blue awnings. Such a carefree time.
Wow. That takes me back. Thanks for posting this to RU-vid!! I went to OSU in the early-to-late 1980s and then lived off of Morse Road near the Northland Shopping Center (and even worked 2 years at SunTV!!) in the early 1990s. I remember it well!!
It took me nearly 2 hours to watch this 46:49 Video because I couldn't stop rewinding and looking at everything. I was only 3 years old when this video was made But nearly everything I see reminds me of something it's like going in a time machine I absolutely love it . Whoever posted this I just wanna say thank you.
Thank you very very much for your comments!! I lived in this area in the 70s for a few years, and thought it would be fun to revisit it in the 80s and see what's changed!
Buzzards Nest Records, Camelot, Waves, Zantigos (taco bell now), Chi-Chi's, The Ground Round, Ponderosa steak house, Showbiz, Flakey Jakes, Fud Ruckers, Big Bear, Cub foods, Children's Palace, Laser One. Isley Shoppe, Friendly's, Roller Chalet. There was a big Ice Cream restaurant in Graceland in the eighties too, forget the name, had a b day party there. I'm sure I'm forgetting heaps of other places, but yeah good trip down memory lane sir, thanks : )
It's odd how much it's still recognizable today but so different at the same time. At least the beginning part on Morse. Most of the businesses are different but the buildings are largely the same. The Wendy's is still a Wendy's, but the Sisters next to it is one of the few remaining Mark Pi express locations around (I work right off SInclair so now I want that for lunch lol). The area near the 70/71 split looks the same now except downtown had fewer buildings in 1986. Campus looks extremely different now, but when I was a student 1995-99 looked pretty much the same as 86. Cool vid.
I've lived in Columbus since 2009 but born in the late 90s. I'm a youngester lol. This feels like I traveled through time exploring. Also shocked to see some stores still here on Morse Road but with just remodeling.
I was a senior at Westerville South when this was taken. I worked at the Holiday Inn on the Lane in 1989. In 1994 I worked as a temp at OSU Stores on the gas cylinder truck.
Thank you for the upload. Thanks to The guys for not only recording, but narrating. I loved Northland mall, I wish it had stayed. The interior for how small it was, was THE MALL. All these “marble” looking center pieces. I feel Tuttle Mall tried to steal some of the design.
What you thought was Derby Hall was Hughes Hall. It was used as the music building when I was there. Thank you so much for posting this. This is a time capsule for me.
I really miss Sisters. The chicken and sides and biscuits all tasted wonderful. Rax was good too. There is still a Rax operating in the east side of Lancaster, Ohio near the hospital.
Zoetropeification is the Rax good? I was planning to drive down there to go to hocking hills and was going to check it out. Sisters mashed potatoes and gravy was the best.
@@ThePlantUtopia You should certainly eat a meal at Rax. The menu offerings are nearly all the same items as from 30 years ago. BBC, Mushroom melt, Philly melt, Rax Deluxe, twisty fries, shakes, salads and more. No salad bar like back in the day but that is to be expected. I live about 35 miles away and because of that onIy eat there about 3 or 4 times a year. But the service has always been good and the food prepared well. Worth checking out for sure. I loved Sister's mashed potatoes. Even the rice at Sister's was great.
10:02 That's the first ever Arthur Treachers location! I have been looking for a photo so I could confirm that the Pawn Shop at that location today is the same building. Thanks for posting this!
@@rawzpfeiffer5521 an article about company hiring mentioned this location. It could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything about it. I'll search the Grandview one and see if I find anything.
OMG!! I definitely miss these days!! I was 15 now I’m 50😄 Suns TV, northland mall, all of Morse rd and I’m going to ask my mom who is now 80 does she remember Rax😄 Yes!! Definitely the OSU campus!!! #backdownmemorylane
This brings back so many memories. I was born and raised in Columbus). When you filmed that, I was living across from the Wendy's (right behind the KFC). I used to go to that Sun Tv all of the time. I moved to Seattle in 2012 and haven't been back since.
I love seeing these little snippets of the past. There's just something fascinating about history especially between the 60s to now. well even a bit before then too but im less interested in the 50s, though those were some interesting times as well. things have developed so fast over those recent decades. even being born in 1990 I've seen so many changes in technology especially. I'm kinda sad about the decline of physical retail stores and malls in rural communities especially. there are far less out of house social areas around these days. at least in smaller areas.
It's almost 36 years later now in August 2022. times sure have changed, businesses come and go, signs come and go. I can only imagine what will become of this country many years down the road. Who knows.
I was an art student and would steal plastic cutlery from the High Street McDonald’s all the time to mix paint and use on clay hahaha. Back when tuition was 700 dollars a quarter, but remember, minimum wage was 3.85.
Ha! Try this now. High has been under construction for what seems like 30 years now. I grew up short north and I remember it being under construction when I was little little. I'm 34 now and it's even worse! I honestly can't remember going through the short north or campus area WITHOUT construction everywhere. I avoid High St as much as I possibly can. Along with trashy Northern Lights and Morse Rd.
McDonald's has moved locations at least two times on Morse Rd. I work at the Department of Taxation and my desk is in the old Northland Lazarus store. Ritzy's is now a gyro shop. They built a new strip mall in front of Northland mall by the fire department and the McDonald's is on the other side of the strip mall.
I came across your video without reading what it was about. I kept looking saying that looks familiar. Then someone says its Columbus. Then i realized that i was 11 years ols then and you were not far from where i lived in worthington. Then the date on the video was my brother's birthday.
That's awesome! Takes me back..if i saw the date right: Oct 86. I was 12yrs old. Growing up in Worthington, Morse Rd had the best stores and mall offered on the North side town! GoldCircle rocked! Childrens Palace toys. Look how may cars don't even have a 3rd breaklight! Wasn't mandated until 86. Love seening vintage local footage, just to see if my memories are accurate 😊
When this video starts you see Sun TV, and across the street is RAX. I lived on that street. Northtown Blvd. I lived in the second house from Northland High's football stadium fence. My parents bought the house for something crazy like $10k in '70. The highway shots dated October 5, 1986 is filmed on my sister's 20th birthday. At that same time I had just started my senior year at crappy Westerville North. I remember Flying Tomato too. That place use to be very popular. In the summer you could walk past it and it was like spring break. Everyone on the patio drinking beer, listening to the music, and just being silly.
I lived in Columbus for the first seventeen years of my life. I know that McDonald’s but I don’t think the upstairs part is there anymore. I was actually telling my parents how the current design for McDonald’s buildings is crap and looks like a prison, to which my dad said he unbelievably never noticed. Nice throwbacks on your radio though. Bruce is still the boss 100%.
The General Cinema Marquee: Top Gun Stand By Me Avenging Force Crocodile Dundee Karate Kid 2 Extremities Mona Lisa The Fly Morse Rd was a major commerce hub at that time. I was hoping the camera would pan over to the Patio Shoppe on Karl Rd. there was a place there called Sonny's Guitar Shop. I spent a lot of time there in 86-88.
I'm the beginning of the video you are looking off to the right(Rax, Sisters chicken) if you would have looked off to the left you would have seen the Amos flea market where I worked in my dad's booth. I would take off on my bike in the morning to go hustle on the campus as an 8-10 year old. There were always tons of people walking around, so I would let the air out of one of my tires and ask everyone I saw for a quarter to call my mom to pick me up. I made a killing. Then I'd stop and air my tire up, hit the castles(White and Aladdin's) and head home. Yes, in the 80s ten year olds could take off in the morning alone, explore miles of a large metropolitan city, feed and take care of themselves.
Yep. Brand new Kroger on that side of Morse too, and lots of new businesses. It was vacant for a few years after Northland Mall was closed and bulldozed but the area is making a comeback.@MarkItAZero
I worked at Sister's Fried Chicken. The part that blows my brain is that I can actually tell you it was sparse pea gravel over a tar macadam. I was there when Northland was built ("always 72 degrees," I sold ice cream, washed trays, sold shoes, lived across a field, went to the library, ate fish and chips with malt beer and malt vinegar, fell in love +times, ate at about 15 historic fast food joints. Ate at Wendy's when there was only one Wendy's in the world.
I lived in Delaware from 72 to 97 and when I was in high school we used to bring our cars down to 161 and Morse Road and cruise and race late at night on the weekends.
I was growing up out there at the time age 8 years old to be exact a Child 🙂on the west part Under Dublin at the outskirts Of Columbus city Limits itself brings back some memories! keep The peace out There From SoCal ✌ where I now reside!👌
I live near Morse center today, insane seeing this footage. I wouldn't have been around but my parents would have. Wonder what they were doing when this was filmed
