Priority must be given and not taken, that’s a very good point mate, traffic going straight always has first priority, traffic turning left has second priority and traffic turning right has last priority, this rule applies everywhere except at roundabouts, I think that’s very important for people to remember, it’s very important to remember that if both are turning right then you’ll both be turning across each other’s path and therefore nobody has priority when both are turning right, I would of just held back and let them make the first move and then I’d go after them as obviously it’s much safer if I’m not turning with anybody else, at 10:44 it’s much easier to think about it like this, both have give way lines so both need to give way to traffic already on the main road, when there is nothing on the main road and there is a car at both minor roads then nobody has priority and a decision has to be made as to who would like to go first, it’s not a rule but it’s courteous to let the car who has been waiting the longest go first but what you really have to do is to make eye contact with them and decide who would like to go first, generally if you’re going straight or turning left then you’re not going to cut across their path so I’d try to make the first move but only if it’s ok with the other driver, if you’re turning right then you’d have to cut across their path so I’d try to get them to go first, if both side roads are turning right then nobody has priority and both of you will need to cut across each others path but I’d try to get them to go first as obviously it’s much safer if you’re not turning with anyone else, that’s a very good point, although the traffic lights are on green we still need to be very careful as some drivers jump red lights and of course emergency vehicles are allowed to go through a red light, yes, some drivers don’t understand yellow box junctions but they’re very easy to understand, going left or straight you must not enter the yellow box unless your exit road is clear, turning right, if your exit road is clear you’re allowed to sit and wait on a yellow box even if there is a car ahead of you also turning right and you can turn when there’s nobody in front of you and there’s a safe gap in the oncoming traffic or the secondary traffic light has just changed to red which means oncoming traffic have a red light, the pedestrians should only cross on a green man but it’s very important to check for pedestrians just in case they decide to cross the road on a red man, yes, it’s very important to always keep the pedestrian crossing area clear, we should always keep the junction clear regardless if there is a yellow box junction or not, that’s very important to remember, nobody has priority at an unmarked crossroads, that’s very important to remember, you need to slow right down on the approach to an uncontrolled crossroads after you’ve identified one and stop if necessary and look for traffic coming from all directions before proceeding, it would have been great if you also mentioned crossroads with a central reservation in the middle but they’re very easy, cars on the side road give way to traffic already on the main road, when there are no cars on the main road and there are cars at both side roads then nobody has priority and a decision has to be made as to who would like to go first but it’s safer and best for traffic flow if cars in the middle of the central reservation clear first before cars from the outside enter, usually you keep to the left hand side when waiting in the middle so another car also turning right can come past you and also wait in the middle if necessary but it depends on the layout, there’s a very small junction next to where I work, it’s a small crossroads with a small central reservation in the middle without a road directly in front so I stop at the give way line and give way to traffic already on the main road and then when there are no cars on the main road I look left to see if there is already a car in the middle, if there is I let them go first and then I enter the middle and wait until the other main road is clear before turning but I wait on the right hand side as there are no road markings in the middle saying how to position while waiting in the middle and if you wait on the left then you’ll be blocking cars also turning right to enter the central reservation which obviously isn’t good so I wait on the right so they can come past me, love the drone footage by the way mate and is that your new car? It’s a lovely colour, lovely little blue car you’ve got there mate! 🙃

Always a pleasure mate, it says online that motorised vehicle drivers can’t use cycle lanes to drive in unless: They are crossing them to enter or exit a driveway or side road, in which case they can drive up to 50 metres in the cycle lane They are crossing them to move from a service lane or other parallel road onto the main carriageway or vice versa. This information is from New South Wales so I’m not sure if it also applies to us here in the UK.

Great lesson, I really needed this. What is an appropriate speed to go straight at crossroads controlled by road-markings? Crawling speed or maintain progress? I tend to slow right down to scan for emergency vehicles, but having priority it appears to others I am slowing down for no reason. I have trouble finding the right balance in this situation.

Hello there. You can making the observation as you are moving forward. You can check side mirrors and center mirror before moving and check traffic while moving

Many thanks for this detailed explanation. Would you be so kind to make one when you get stuck in the middle. Ie you have gone through and are turning right. Also when you have gone through the lights but there is a yellow box. Also when the arrows are on the floor and you as a driver have to go around the other driver. Happend to me once and I just blagged it. These sort of junctions fill me with major anxiety.

Hello Karen 👋 yes, I will upload a detailed video on turning right at traffic lights. However, in the meantime watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VHE34XbixhU.html

My understanding was that you may wait at a yellow box junction if you want to turn right but are stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic.

Excellent explanation and very good use of the drone footage made it so much easy to visualise. Few questions. 1. How does one decide if the road is off side to off side or near side to near side.l because not all roads have clear markings. 2. At traffic light controlled junctions, you mentioned observation is equally relevant. But wouldn't the examiner mark you down for undue hesitation. What i mean is, what would be a sufficient level of observation once lights have gone green before a driver beeps at you from the back. Thanks.

Hello Talha 👋 great questions. Firstly, in the absence of road signs or marking, the off side to off side method is recommended as its safer. However, if the opposite driver positions first in near side to near side. Following them is better to fighting them. Secondly, you don't need to wait stationary while making observations. They can be made as you are moving off. This will not be hesitation Thanks for your support. I did try making a video on changing lane, but it came out a disaster.
