Driving simulators should simulate everything! | Which one does rain the best?

This is a non scientific, super subjective test. I love the way AMS2 looks, although the wet weather driving seemed weird. ACC does a great job all round, and RF2 is super difficult but looks the most realistic to me.
I don't think any do the job perfectly, but at least its something...
Props to the developers of each simulator for including it. :)

If a sim does rain I feel it should be doen as realistically as possible. The problem with that is that it's just not fun to race in the rain... The problem is that most simracers compare rain racing in sims with what they think it should be, not what it is. I've raced in the rain in real life and my main takeaway was that visibility is a lot worse than any of those three, the roostertails hiding the cars in front of you is one thing, but those roostertails hit your windscreen or helmet like a gardenhoze constantly spraying in your face. Also I found the car being tail happy not as problematic as they are simulated, but what's lacking is the absolute lack of grip on the front end. If you try to turn in over a certain speed nothing happens. Even in this comment section people say it feels like ice as if it's a bad thing, but it does feel like ice in certain corners.

Great video Dave . Your face is redder than mine an I’ve had an allergic reaction to my epilepsy meds . Your correct about being currently spoilt in sim racing … competition breed’s improvement across the board .. just being able to do comparisons like this wasn’t really a thing a few years ago.. same with the equipment. Such a vast improvement in both quality an affordability in the last couple of years . Likely due to sim racing going more main stream over the niche it once was . Couldn’t of picked a better car to test with though.. love the Porsche cup in any of the sims .. although my personal favourite is rFactors .. but the wet weather driving is extremely difficult .. easier in certain cars .. usually the more modern content ..(the Porsche cup in rFactor 2 hasn’t been updated for some time ) doesn’t detract from how it drives but not sure it has the new tyre model ? If 397 make a 992 I will be in sim racing heaven … in the dry out of all the sim’s the rFactor 2 Porsche drives the most realistic for me … hard yes .. tricky yes … rewarding when you get it right… but most importantly just pure fun. You should give the BTCC cars a blast in the wet if you want a good wet race to test in rFactor 2 .. just adds even more to the paint swopping adrenaline rush that is BTCC . Plus the wipers an windshield react completely differently to the rain droplets on the new content .

Have you tried doing it on GT7? In one of the races on Tokyo there is standing water and it does reduce your speed as you go through and you get feedback aswell. On one of the races on Le Mans depending on the level of water on the track and how heavy it is raining, even on intermediates you can get a bit of a slide either left or right if it is too wet showing you need to take it more careful or change to full wets. Also as the track dries out the inters start burning off more and losing grip if you stay on the line but if you keep going over to the wetter parts of the track it helps to ease the tyre burnoff, like real tyres do. Also, depending on how wet the track is changing gears sometimes can be tricky if you get wheel spin and the car will start to lose control meaning you have to back off. Visibility changes too depending on how much water is on the track and if it is drying out or the rain is getting heavier.

Increasing rear camber adds more grip in RF2. That's because there's more static friction from the larger contact patch. I think that because wing downforce doesn't seem as connected to grip, than contact patch does, dialing in cars has a steeper learning curve with RF2.

How do these sims compare to PC2 ? (To the weather driving only) I know pc2 is old, but thought it was a pretty good "console" sim at the time. Specially with live changing weather atmosphere & track conditions. I fired it up the other day & remembered how weather was so dynamic and life like for 2017? It was the 1st sim that u can really feel the tires grip from the road. Also liked how hard contact with other cars felt real & not flimsy. Cool video BTW!

Interesting video, but I think it's difficult to judge the full scale of the different sims and their rain implementation based on a few short races, as it's a pretty dynamic feature. rF2 doesn't have hydro- or aquaplaning compared to ACC and AMS2, wich is a bit of a draw back, but it's drying line after the rain based on vehicle trajectory is still quite advanced and better than in ACC for example. After the latest update ambient and track temps affect how fast it dries aswell and until around 50 % wetness you have less grip on the rubbered in surface, while the rubber get's washed away with more and more water. According to the devs 100 % wetness in rF2 is Monsoon aka red flag state and you would clearly need a wet setup. No wonder you kept spinning on your dry setup where AMS2 seemed like alot less rain. Curbs and even the white lines affect grip levels in rF2. All in all I am glad that devs spend the effort on implementing wet weather and all sims do atleast a decent job. Also intersting to see how AI handles wet weather wich is quite an important part for me. ACC and rF2 do this quite a bit better than AMS2. Another interesting test would be to test slicks in wet and mixed conditions or stuff like tyre cooling.
@Leynad778
@Leynad778 2 года назад
I'm running AMS2 with AI quite a bit and often put the last quarter some light rain in the mix, so racing with slicks. AI works quite well and usually doesn't change tyres if it's not getting real slippery. rF2 AI is still broken and never really tried AI in ACC.
@nicolatranchino7089
@nicolatranchino7089 2 года назад
@@Leynad778 yeah but they're inconsistent and often very slow when wet. I had couple of races yesterday, half race in started to rain and times went from being within half a second from each other to give the ai 5 second a lap just cause was damp. AMS2 might look the best out there with rain effects, but that's just graphics. The actual grip level, curb behavior, ai handling and visibility is incredibly off.

This comparison is meaningless if you don't choose the same level of grip in every sim. If you use "default processing" track conditions in AMS2, it's a barely wet surface. Changing it to "wet" makes you a good 5 secs a lap slower. And AFAIK 100% wetness in rF2 is monsoon red flag conditions. So largely in irrelevant comparison. The kerbs in AMS2 could be a bit slippier, mind you.

I want them to simulate it as accurately as possible. If that makes it much more difficult, so be it. I certainly don't want it dialed back just to make it easier for the average player. I mostly run iRacing and I think rain will be very polarizing in official races. In some series, slower cars in particular, it should be fun, but for faster stuff I think it's going to be havoc. It'll be a blast in endurance races, for sure. Hopefully they are taking so long because they are making sure they get it dead on.

The rain-racing in AMS2 can differ quite a lot depending on the car and when it feels great, it's the best. The Porsche Cup has too much grip in the dry already and that's not one of it. Driving the 992 in ACC is a bit of a cheat since it's a completely different car and more like a Gen 1 GT3 R than a 911 Cup. These machines are driving high 2:19 at Spa (not ACC) and 1:29 at Red Bull Ring. The 911 is horrible in ACC in the rain, at least it was before 1.8 and the 992 is a lot better. Rain physics in rF2 are just BS and feels like driving on ice. I was watching enough 24h races on the Nürburgring with onboards in heavy rain and it's not like that at all. In the dry IMO the Porsche Cup 991 in rF2 is the best and the 992 in ACC 2nd.

AFAIK they all suck and none actually simulate correct wet racing lines. In ACC you're still faster on the rubbered line compared to the outside, which is totally wrong compared to real-life. Same with all sims, IIRC. Maybe rFactor 2 actually simulates a proper wet racing line, but I'm not sure about that either.

Question for iRacing devs: for how much longer do you think your customers will tolerate you being dead last for graphics and immersion? I know I’m losing my patience. Stop coming up with new cars and tracks to get our money and fix the friggin core product!

What do I need graphics and weather if I have no strict rules and cannot drive online because of people crashing me. And no, with 41 and full time job and family I will not join a racing league and maybe even pay again and being forced to drive when THEY want me to or some bs (was there before). Although they could lower their prices a bit. I find iRacing pretty expensive. But I also must say I am only interested in IndyCar and Nascar on Ovals.

None of these sims can even hold a candle to GT7 in this particular regard. All of these have either rain on or rain off, no dynamism. GT7 has raised the bar to a whole new level with regards to in race weather. Not suggesting for a second that GT7 is a better SIM, but it's dynamic weather system is the new bar.

I gotta say I actually agree here. I've been doing the spa 1 hour race a bit, testing verious gt 3 cars and the rain it so good. The drying line rubbers in its so rewarding, but when it rains again, forget it lol. Its very good.
@uSACRIFICE

GT7’s dynamic weather system is just what Project Cars 2 already had and now AMS2 has upgraded (weather, no wet physics). Weather radar is the most ridiculous thing only an Asian could put in a racing game. Lol. None of these sims have rain on or off immediately. Wet tracks dry with time and weather. If it’s cold in ACC, water will stand longer than if it’s sunny and warm. Drive some sims first, then come up with an opinion 🤷‍♂️

@@uSACRIFICE it's absolutely nothing like project cars 2 so don't even bother talking that bollocks, I played project cars 2 to death, along with acc, and all the other sims on my pc, and none of them do rain anywhere near as good as gt 7 at all. if you pay close attention to why wet or dry happens so quick is because its scales to time, if a race is longer, the wet last longer, if its shorter it drys quicker, actually try paying attention before desperately trying to discredit gt7 rain

@jernhoeganonymous9816

Why? At best the experience of driving a racecar in the rain is very subjective and the realism is very questionable, your trying three different simulators and get three different experiences. And Who in their right mind and in a competitive car would choose to drive in the rain, when you have the choise to drive in the dry. Only drivers in a non competitive car, would choose to drive in the rain, due to the chance to gain positions is greater than the risk of poor result.
