This engine is prone to many problems. I would recommend buying a facelift model years 2005-2007. Supposedly, you can get significantly less electrical problems on the later year models.

So is a 2005 less prone to engine issues?

@@bjornzek the later, the better. Yes.

@@David-lh9wh thanks, I just bought a low mileage 2005 kompressor, I go and pick it up on Monday, im hoping it won’t be a pain because I’m just coming off daily driving and e46 that would never let me catch a break lol, no heat or ac either. This car has those and I’m very excited to actually have climate control for this coming winter

I have had 2 of these a Uk spec C240 petrol sedan and a c200 diesel estate (station wagon) both year 2001. The sedan was so nice of a ride legendary really, the wagon felt different as rear air suspension. Both had automatic transmission problems, in the Uk it was difficult finding someone that works on autos. Love the cars so much but would prefer them as weekend cars and use a Toyota as a daily driver, I just personally would not rely on them for work or to take a long trip in. Great videos!

I have a pre-facelift c200 kompressor which i still enjoy driving (im the 3rd owner). But the ownership experience hasnt been the smoothest i’ll admit. Though it has been maintained to some extent by the previous owners, there were still a lot of things left to get sorted which i guess the others just didnt want the trouble of spending for. I guess its understandable given the amount of money they put into fixing and replacing stuff based on their stories and the invoices and receipts i found. Now its my turn to get a slice of their headaches LOL. Got stranded once since it wouldnt start at all, turns out the area where the front SAM module is got flooded with water and the cause was tiny drain plug that got plugged up over its 23 yrs. Took quite a bit of time and money to fix but it ran again after that. Presently the AC evaporator leaks so i had that replaced (god, the disassembly looks chaotic) and some oil leaks surfaced around the crankshaft seal. The transmission started to leak a bit so i had that checked too. Its in the shop right now but im sure as hell my wallets crying right now 🤣

A new Camry would drive not much better than a well maintained old C-200 and it will lose 20% of the purchasing price by the end of 2nd year. Yearly insurance would be much higher. If you bought your C200 at 1/10 of its initial purchased price you will likely need another 1/10 to bring it up to well sorted out condition. Make it as a hobby and learning curve. Buy a dashboard mounted OBD2, dip stick, TPMS, etc etc. My OBD2 had help on my journey of upstanding how my E200k supercharger works. My OBD2 have 5 display menu. In page 1 I set it to display MAP, MAF, short & long fuel trim, throttle body opening, RPM, speed, engine load, O2 reading. During idling at 840rpm with air cond off my manifold pressure is at -7.3 psi and MAF at not more than 4.7g/second. I had recorded the OBD2 display with a mounted handphone while on auto cruise mode. Cursing at 2000rpm while MAP is nearly at 0 psi the MAF value is at 27g/second. While climbing a slope the air manifold pressure climbs to +3 to +5 psi without the car dropping a gear vs MAF going towards 35g/second. This would be the ECU closing the SC bypass flap. Many things could be learned from U tube. I get my mechanic, during annual oil change or at 10,000km, to change items that are a bit worn but not yet failed. A bit costly but a way to build up relationships. Regards

Hey, I had an 05 benz c230 and I walked in to a store after I parked it outside, I came back and it was on fire from under the hood towards the front window. What can spontaneously cause that? It was a very hot day and I was running the ac on high. I was shocked. Thanks.

Probably something in the ac since it runs off the engine, it went wrong and got fried. That sucks, hope it isn’t anything major

@bjornzek the firefighters came and demolished the whole front they couldn't open the hood even with their tools and cutting lol. Total loss. But I've never seen this or heard of this happening. I'm guessing the parking lot maybe had oil puddles and my low sitting car and the heat of the exhaust ignited it? That or something by the window in the engine maybe exploded or something I'm lost on it.
