The 2025 Volvo EX30 is coming to U.S. shores VERY SOON, and it’s set to be one of the most exciting EVs we’ve seen in quite some time. It’s an affordable EV that’s priced to fly off dealer lots and has brought a TON of interest to the Volvo brand. It’s also an electric car that’s courted a bit of controversy of late with the Biden administration steeply increasing tariffs on Chinese-bought cars. We’ll ask Volvo about that as we take one of the first drives of this compact SUV on American roads.

Wondering about range? Volvo tells us it expects over 250 miles on the EPA test cycle. However, at the time of publication, the automaker is awaiting final figures.

Pretty sure that's a MY24. MY25 has the "EX30" lettering on the back hatch, not on the C pillars.

We (wife and I) have been driving Citroën C4 Picasso minivans for well over a decade. There are no guages in front of the driver. Everything is under a large cowl in the middle of the immense dash. That's to say, well to the right of the driver's line of sight. It took only minutes to get accustomed.

As one with a $500 Reservation on this car, I appreciate a video that I thought was coming from the USA. The parked car had a South Carolina Plate on the back, but the car while driving had European Plants on the front and back? I also appreciate, kind of, the Tariff question as that non-answer is basically what my dealer has to say on the subject? In nearly a year, we USA Reservers/buyers haven't heard a word from Volvo about our Configuration Date and certainly not a Delivery Date. I guess I'm somewhat relieved that after watching hundreds of European Review/Delivery videos to see now two videos with the same Volvo Rep in the car... and maybe from the good old USA.

We didn’t have time to get enough b-roll to feature US-only video so we borrowed some exterior imagery from Volvo. The car itself was driven on US soil but an early prototype wearing US plates.

I suspect that's a 2024 Model as opposed to a prototype, given the 2025s are supposed to not have the two EX30s on the Roofline and instead have one tag on the rear... which honestly I'm kind of disappointed about. Additionally, the Steering wheel buttons are supposed to be improved and the ones on that car were the same as all the other '24s. Anyway, thanks for clearing this matter up... I'm pleased to see them on our roads... Finally!!

Because Volvo stated it’s a prototype (maybe started life as a 2024 but with some NA updates) the car could not be driven without the representative tagging along. When we get to drive a true production-ready 2025 later this year we’ll be able to go far more in depth (and alone).

Looks like an very compelling (relatively) lower priced EV option. HOWEVER, why not offer even a simple HUD that displays basic necessary info (like speed)??? It's baffling to me that auto manufacturers these days don't want to incorporate simple solutions... 10,000 glances for a center screen speedo vs. about 100 glances that it took me to get used to my EV6's HUD.

Absolutely agree about a simple HUD. Volvo has always been the leader on safety in the automotive industry and not having a very simple digital cockpit, or as you say, simple HUD, is mind boggling. I love Volvos, their simplicity and Scandinavian flair. Emphasis on sustainability is fantastic, but it should never compromise safety.

I’d be waiting for the Kia EV3. It has legroom in the back, heaps more boot storage, buttons and a heads up display. Likely to be cheaper as well.

Great review. Sustainability is nice but no gauge cluster or HUD is clearly primarily a cost saving measure, one which buyers at this price point will have to decide if it's worth it. I'm positive they started there, then someone in a board room said "figure out a way to justify this as a safety feature". I'm sure many will get used to it, but for me it's a deal breaker (That and the dumb 2 switches for all 4 windows thing, which ID.4 owners have been complaining about for years now). Kris Rifa also lambasted the UI for its frustrating inability to easily access frequent functions, which he demonstrated in his review...I'm curious if they updated the software or you just had a very different experience

Wifey picks up her Dual Motor top spec EX30 next Friday. It replaces a long line of Mini Cooper Ss but Mini did not seem to come up with a similar offering and wanted a staggering 8.9% apr with no dealer contribution, while Volvo was 2.9% apr with £1k dealer contribution. Way to lose a customer, mini. Plus the Volvo looks way more futurustic. The drive in tje ex30 is amazing.

Its simply too expensive for this segment, at $68k drive away here in Australia. This puts it $6k ahead of the base Tesla Model Y. Ouch!

It has autopark included in the plus model and other features that align with the base Model Y with the enhanced autopilot (no lane change). Except when you resell your Tesla, you can't sell the autopilot.

A very nice looking car and a real pleasure to drive. However, three things put us off buying. The first was the space for getting in and out for the rear passengers. The second was the wheel trims. Yes, those black inserts are actually wheel trims! Smaller wheels equals more range, so why not go 17” and have an all alloy wheel? Lastly, we were very excited about the amount of recycled materials. All except for the inside of the doors. These look really cheap and nasty and if I had to guess, looked like recycled polystyrene tea/coffee cups. If it weren’t for those things, we’d be driving an EX30 now.

I wanted this one so badly. After sitting in it at a local dealership during a roadshow, I decided against it. I canceled my order (edit: preorder) in mid April and despite multiple phone calls Volvo has still not refunded me the deposit.

It’s an overview. It’s one of the only few in North America right now and it’s considered a prototype. There’ll be a proper first drive review later this year. However at first glance we like what we see. Not a sales video, just facts.

Fair enough I've just heard some other reports of the negatives associated with the EX30. Such as the battery range predictor being totally inaccurate among some other minor software issues I'd like to see these being reported as that would feed back to Volvo to make necessary changes

The car has been already available in Europe and there is a lot of complaints from owners. Check the EX30 subreddit. There's serious malfunctions of the safety automated systems such as lane keep steering where people report the car has pushed them into dangerous situations. This car is just a beta/alpha phase.

If you’re asking what the plug standard will be, it will be the SAE J3400 connector, also known as NACS.

It is way to expensive. For the lower thrim fine price. But if you need a car with more features. The price will come up, and then you get way more at tesla, nissan or other brands

Nice looking and nice to see more manufacturers offering economy EVs. Not a fan of the glass roof. Driving a greenhouse isn't efficient to climate control in the warmer months. I also want a minimalist EV emphasizing efficiency with things like physical buttons and LED gauges rather than massive screens drawing power and collecting smudges.

Re: the glass roof. Most OEMs would probably love to leave the glass roofs off of cars for tons of reasons. Most customers demand having one, though.

Whoever thought speedometer should be in center of console is an idiot. Heads up display is so inexpensive if you're too cheap to have a standard speedometer. The carbon footprint of a tiny screen is a laughable excuse. Your screen is so huge, you could have two smaller screens thus taking same carbon footprint. And no physical controls and no haptic feedback is another issue. Look at the backlash Honda got for removing a physical knob for volume control of the stereo to a touch interface. It was so bad, they switched back the very next year.

Genius? With that terrible interior and software that is all but ok. Wouldn't drive it if I got one for free. There is so many better options in that price/size group. I know some engineer that works on Volvo in Gothenburg and even those guys would´t buy one, if the price were 15 000 Euro lower, perhaps it could be interesting.

90% of your electronics are Chinese produced. The best EV batteries currently are made in China. Fit and finish is impeccable on Volvos and Polestars. Quit with the xenophobic nationalism. US made cars are poorly made.

@@bobdrago6965 This is a Swedish product. This ignorance about it being "Chinese" is common but it is untrue. It was developed by the same teams that developed the XC40. The only exception is that it uses a corporate Geely platform but on top of that, its specs in design, materials, manufacturing production, suspension tuning, combination of steels in the body, all of that is done in Sweden. You can make it in China or Europe or the USA, the specs will be the same.
