This is the stuff! Listen to the mighty inline 6 roar to life again as we drive the end of the most iconic Skyline race machine the Team Impul Skyline GT-R R34 with the striking blue Calsonic Livery. There's something about the completely solid colored car that just looks right. It's simple but really captures your attention and imagination when paired with the lines of the Skyline. As far as this being the end of the Calsonic colors on a Japanese race car, Team Impul would continue to run the overall scheme going forward after the end of the Skyline GT-R in 2003, splashing the Nissan Z with the blue in the following years, eventually transitioning to the modern GT-R and finally coming back to the Z starting in 2022.
A little bit more on the actual race car. So despite this being called a Skyline GT-R, I believe it shares very little with the production car. The chassis and obviously monstrous aerokit really bring the car into a realm of performance and appearance you couldn't achieve with the production Skyline. Though the body is quite different, it still used the famous RB26DETT that breathed life into every Skyline GT-R starting in 1989 with the R32 and finally ending in 2002 with the R34.
It might seem like a bit of an odd combo, to do a solo drive around Calfornia roads in what is supposed to be a track weapon, but trust me it fits so well. The speed at which you're able to negotiate corners, and how flat the car drives lends itself to carving up the multitude of corners. The smooth throttle response and control you have over the braking allows you to chain the quick succession of corners fairly easy, and is actually a surprisingly relaxing drive.
This car really came from the end of the golden age for JDM cars, and I am sure for a lot of us, we could only imagine the excitement of seeing it battle it's way in a pack of Supra's and NSX's. It brings me a ton of joy to be able to experience just a small sliver of what that glorious time had to offer through Assetto Corsa, and it's just another example of what makes racing sims so incredible.
