Driving Through Terlingua, TX

Buzzards on the Road

Upon our arrival in Terlingua, the Two Old Buzzards installed the Hero 2 camera on the windshield and took a drive through town. While we did miss going out far enough to find the brand new Cottonwood Market, we caught enough so you can see what his area is like.

This part of Texas is a land of transition. Just go 200 miles to the east and everything's lush and green. The moisture from the gulf seems to get as far as Del Rio, then just dissipates. The brush gradually gets more dry until you get here and it's desert all the way to California and Baja.

It is an interesting town with a lot of mining history (history for us in U.S.). There is a old cemetery there that is also interesting. Terlingua means 3 tongues. Named because 3 languages were spoken there during the old mining days...English, Spanish and a Native Anerican one.

You're very welcome. I love that rugged area of our great country. I'm always moved by this old legend...."According to Indian legend, when the Great Creator made the earth and had finished placing the stars in the sky, the birds in the air, and the fish in the sea, there was a large pile of rejected stony materials left over. Finished with His job, He threw this into one heap and made the Big Bend."

For sure social distancing would NOT be a problem! Although, I must say, I wouldn't buy land around Terlingua. As the old adage goes, "It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna live there!" Seriously, do go and visit Big Bend National Park. You can headquarter in Terlingua and enjoy it as well (especially the old cemetery and the Starlight Theatre restaurant).

I beg to differ, as a musician myself, I thought the 2 guitars played together throughout the entire song was expertly written. Someone is a musician, I could tell. That is some serious rhythm and lead guitar music.

Living in these isolate places is only for people who have checked out of society. I've lived in a few. Believe me I've known a few peoplw that have checked out and they get as far from society as they can. Check out Slab City in the South West. The city with no laws and no Gov. Lots of Hippies. If you live in one of these places, better have some means of income like a pension or SS or disability because there are no jobs.

@@BadOldBuzzard Hi John. Maybe the reason this is your most popular video is because of the camera perspective. You have the camera at interesting angle that we don't see very often, it makes it look cinematic, with an almost slow motion effect. Also, the landscape is stunning. I came across your video as i am a musician looking for footage to use for a music video. This one stood out.

If you take I-20 (which I would never do) is about 8.5 hours. If you go 377/190 it's just over 9 hours (which I would do). I found the song for you.... It is from the album "Baroque Guitars" by Yvalain and the song is "Sonate2-Andante". DON'T go to Terlingua without spending 4-5 days exploring Big Bend National Park!!!!! The Chisos Mining Company Motel is nice and very reasonable. It's only 5 miles from the western park entrance.

Could be it's still Cochise! Terlingua is a Mexican word meaning "three tongues". In the mid-1800's the Mescalero Apaches moved into the area. There were already white settlers and Mexicans living in the Big Bend area of the Rio Grande river. All three languages were commonly spoken here. Hence, "three tongues" and the settlement ofTerlingua! Fascinating place filled with history!
