It’s another day on the road and another chance to see what the New Tesla Model 3 refresh “Highland” Long Range Dual Motor can do!
Real-world efficiency and capable range in cold weather conditions (I start the day in 4c only with NO preheating!) .
Then I drive it to 0% so I can see how fast it charges. As it was driven to such a low state of battery it means no preconditioning which actually means it will charge slower than its capable of in some conditions.
We can then calculate how long it would take the car to recharge if covering longer distances. Take for example a 500 mile trip which is the length of the UK, more than Edinburgh to London and about the same as Calais to Geneva. The model 3 can do this distance with just one charge of under 30 minutes, potentially only 20 minutes. Now that isn’t bad is it… you need that to stop and rest and have a coffee and lunch anyway!

Therefore has a vested interest in promoting milk floats. I wonder if that Tesla has been paid for via the limited company that runs the dealership to benefit from the various tax benefits and avoid the horrific depreciation occurring on milk floats at present… just curious.

@@craiglockley9939what are you talking about? This guy has his own independent used EV dealership, so is in direct competition with the main dealers. The guy sells second hand EV’s for good prices and makes EV’s affordable for more people. That's a great review ,as electric goes the car seems great ,but I live in Ireland the infrastructure sucks, it really does ,so it need major investment in Ireland for this to work for myself as I do lots of miles,secondly the car not cheap I think nearly 60000,but the amount the car devalues is ridiculous, and the warranty I think they give 120000 miles on the battery and that's great but who's going to buy a 100, 000 electric car with hardly any warranty because when it goes wrong, it's the end. I wish reviewers would tell the truth about these aspects, the cars great when bought new,but money,charging infrastructure etc, it doesn't makes financial sense at all . Hi Richard, apologies but I'm not sure about your maths on the range/price. The cost you quoted for the fast charge ie ?100kWh is reasonable at @34p per kWh, ditto @7p for home charging hence the significant advantage (as ever) for home charging. My beef is that my home charger would expire if asked to pump in 100kWh per hour- as for most people it is 7.2kWh/hr and my o/n tariff is for 4 hours only. So I agree if the o/n tariff lasted for 24h but that ain't the case. I adore what they have done to update the M3 but the lack of indicator/lights would put me off- I passed my test in 1977 so habits are rather ingrained. Keep up these videos- and I have no idea where you find the time whilst running a successful business.

On 'Economy Seven' you get seven hours at a reduced rate but EDF have just raised that from around £0.08/kWh to £0.16/kWh, still considerably cheaper than the daytime rate though. With a 7 kW charge connection you could put in 49 kWh in the seven hours overnight giving a daily range approaching 200 miles at 4 miles/kWh. It would cost £7.84 per overnight charge ......

Hi, me again, about insurance. Sadly the cost is going up for all motor vehicles. Have a look at Range Rover quotes for a real shock. It's not just down to the vehicle model though. You do need to research using your particular details - quotes are very individual.

Advice to maintain battery after extensive tests : - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w4lvDGtfI9U.htmlsi=5YfpjbhVCac2HCWd

Why do you run your battery to 0%, knowing that you're degrading the battery? I hardly ever let my battery run down below 20% and rarely charge to 100%. It is sort of equivalent to red-lining an I.C.E car from cold; ie it's a no no. There is extensive scientific evidence to show depth of charge has substantial effect on battery life. Operate between 20% to 80%.

It’s there to be used. I wouldn’t leave it parked for long times at the extremes but otherwise use it! If it was really bad they would t let you.

Does the Highland have the LFP battery and if so can it be repeatedly charged to 100% without any ill effects?
@rogerstarkey5390

You can "Repeatedly charge" Nickel based packs to 100%. The trick is not to leave them "cooking". . I mean..... You "can" change your oil in an ICE vehicle at 30,000 miles.... But WOULD you? Or Drive everywhere in 3rd gear?

Only the RWD standard range has LFP. There are rumors however that Tesla is working on new batteries for the long range model, when or if it will happen is very much unknown at the point.

I drive Cardiff to Bristol about 4 days a week, 115 miles round trip. Really considering the Model 3 as my company car, but I cannot charge from home and I am sure the charging would annoy the hell out of me.. But the BIK tax rates are so low I may have to put up with it.. I am stumped...
@EwanM11
@EwanM11 7 месяцев назад
Don't do it unless you can charge at home. I've got a model 3 performance and have a 150 mile daily round trip but can charge both at home and at work. Even if i could only charge at work it would probably cause issues when driving in the weekend.

If you can charge at home there's no argument, EVs are way cheaper to run. If you use the public charging network, not so much. They need to reduce their prices to match the reduction in wholesale costs.
@RSEV
@RSEV 7 месяцев назад
Tesla have been good at reduced public rapid charging costs. Sometimes they’re less than home charging. Others at £0.79 like Gridserve and Instavolt not so, yet.

Hi great review on efficiency. just wondered when your autoshift calibrated - I have a rwd highland and it seems to be stuck on 75% after a hundred miles or so

It was a solid couple days. Depends how many times park and get close to objects I think. Then you have to make sure you put seatbelt on first for it to auto shift.

Hi Richard, you never seem to use autopilot on the motorways. Would that alter the range significantly? Make your journey less tiring?

Autopilot is less efficient than actually driving the car. Not by much but still less efficient.

Great informative videos. I have owned my model 3 LR since june 21. Just had a test drive in the new highland model 3 SR ultra red. They didn't have a LR available to test. Was impressed by how much better the ride quality was and also the noise in the car was a lot less. The ventilated seats will be great in the summer. Range seems to have been improved too. When i got back to the showroom ordered a LR in white with white interior and standard wheels as they had one in the showroom and it looked good. Should get it in March to get new plate.

I like the white interior too but i gave up at the end, because i saw the showroom car with white interior already beat up a bit, then my gf convince me to get a white seat cover instead of the white interior 🥲

I’d love a Tesla! I find it interesting that you heat the car @RSEV although range isn’t an issue for you. I have a VW ID.3 and instead of heating it I just heat my seat as I’m usually on my own or only have one passenger who also uses their heated seat. It’s a good way to eek out those extra miles of range 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

Hi Richard - love your videos and I too received my Model 3 Highland a few days ago. I agree wholeheartedly with your review. The incremental improvements have made a very good vehicle great. I have one question. I didn't see the warning symbols on your speed indicator or hear many of the annoying pings that I am now getting whenever I go even slightly above the speed limit. Have you found a way to disable this ?? The looking away chimes seem to go when drowsiness alerts are disabled. However, I cant so similar with speed Thanks in advance

Quick question, I have just had my Model 3 LR (Hyland) delivered however, I have charged it up to 100% and the range is only showing at 293 Miles. Seems really low so I spoke to Tesla and they suggest to raise it as a service issue. Should the range be this low for a brand new car (only done 96 miles) or could there be issues?

I wonder how much weight affects the range and performance (0-100 and 100-0). I cannot seem to find anyone testing EVs with near maximum load, usually always just a single reviewer in the car. It actually matters for us as we are a family of 5 and with vacation packing it could be pretty close the load cars are approved for.
@rogerstarkey5390
@rogerstarkey5390 8 месяцев назад
Richard ran a large part of his previous test "3 up".... . Logically, weight is "momentum" / "potential energy" once at speed, so an EV will recover more when regenerative braking with a load. Less impact than with ICE.
@pauld3327
@pauld3327 8 месяцев назад
Weight has very minimal impact on range at steady speed.
@ProXcaliber
@ProXcaliber 8 месяцев назад
I thought the same thing at one point, but it turns out weight doesn't affect range once you're already going, and it's actually better for slowing down or stopping since more goes into the battery with regen.

Saw a prototype new taycan being tested for range on youtube, the guy was driving at 50 so obviously it was going to do well but he managed 465 miles out of it so hope you'll be testing one of those once they are available in the UK.

It's rumoured to have a 110kWh pack, so that's 4.22 miles/kWh at 50. And 47% more battery than this car.
