Driving to the top of Mauna Kea Volcano in Hawaii
Highest elevation: 4.207 m (13,803 ft)
Map: goo.gl/maps/a7...
The distance covered in this video is 19 km, and the elevation gain is 2.146 m. The average slope percentage is 11 % but there are sections up to 17%. The road is paved, except for an 8 km section in the middle, for which a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
As at 4.000 m altitude there is almost 40% less oxygen than at sea level, respiratory problems are possible, so everyone has to stop at the visitors center for at least 30 minutes for acclimatization, while people with health issues are advised not to climb to the top.
The climate conditions on the top can be harsh and can change rapidly. Even though Hawaii has generally a tropical climate, during winter time on the top you can find up to 2 m of snow.

Good ol Mauna Kea the unforgettable gruesome walk when our unit flew to the Big Island to conduct Military training. Climbing this mountain was our last training we had to do before we went back to Schofield Barracks on Oahu. Felt like eternity but most of us made it. Good memories. B-Co 2-27 3rd BCT 25th I.D. ✌️

That's so cool how you're literally driving through the clouds. On a hot summer day here in the southeast US, I always look up at clouds and wonder what it's like up there, like how high up they are and how cold it is.

I remember my parents took me here as a child. I grew up on the Island of oahu so when I came here, it was the first time I ever saw snow on the ground and felt the cold. I also had to get an emergency oxygen mask because it’s so high up that some people can’t breathe.

Awesome. We drove up to the visitor center when we were there and they had a sign there that said you couldn't drive to the top without a 4WD and that rental car companies would charge you something like 2,000 dollars to come tow you out. There was no way I was going to risk that. Looking back I wish we had just done a tour. It was still very cool at the visitors center. The mountain does look really enormous coming from the ocean to almost 14,000 feet. It really slopes gradually too.

The only danger is to people who don't know how to drive in mountains. The trip is about a 13,000' drop in elevation one of the largest in the world. If you don't use low gear and try to break all the way down your breaks may fry and then you crash because you have no breaks! If you use low gear its no problem at all. Another problem is Hawaiian people don't know how to drive on snow or ice because except on the top of this mountain there is no snow or ice in Hawaii.

What's annoying is that I saw two vehicles(at least) that were not 4X4. A Nissan Rogue and a sedan were both seen on the descent from the summit. I saw nothing on this road that makes you really need a 4X4, unless you have no clue what you're doing. The Mt Washington Auto Road has much narrower actual road, is dirt and gravel most of the way up and is even steeper in sections. Yet, they make it a destination that hundreds, if not thousands, utilize in a day. What's really annoying me the most is that to rent ANYTHING that is acceptable to take to the top is nearly impossible. And if you want to take any of the myriads of tours, be willing to shell out over $200/person. So it's either pay $800 vs $350 for 4X4 rental to sedan, or pay the same for a tour. Or hike to the top. Which I don't think I'm ready to do. Honestly, just rent a car and learn to use Low gear and modulate your brakes. This is not some death dealing drive...

The visitors center. They have a sign at the visitors center and they may have had a gate to keep people w/o 4X4's from going; I just can't remember. I remember asking the lady at the visitors center if we could drive up in our rental Chevy Cruz and pretty much told me I was a fool if I did and I would have to pay a tow company 2K to come tow me out if we got stuck. The road doesn't look very bad however. I have driven some roads in Georgia like the road up to Springer mt in my Toyota Camry. That road is steep, narrow, large drop-offs, huge ruts, gravel, etc. We made it ok going very slowly but it was iffy.
