We drive Valley of the Gods from west to east along a twisting 17-mile gravel road flanked by towering reddish-brown buttes and mesas, offering breathtaking views. These ancient rock formations bear names like the Seven Sailors Butte, Castle Butte, Sitting Hen Butte, and even the whimsical Lady in the Bathtub.
You can drive the entire loop in about an hour or take your time to enjoy the changing terrain. Camping overnight is also an option and the entrance to this area is free, as it is owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Was there last week on an adventure motorcycle. There are bouts of SAND across the washes. We bareley made it through. My riding partner (lots of experience on dirt bikes) went down. Don't believe we would have made it on a cruiser/tourer. The sand is mostly less than 100 feet long and generally not too deep. But there are a couple of nasty exceptions that are longer and deeper. Would not be much if any issue in a vehicle. Very worthwhile detour.

Hopefully, your riding partner and bike were ok! We totally get the challenge with those bouts of sand. We drove there in the spring and then again just a couple of weeks ago, and noticed the difference. We were genuinely surprised. Nevertheless always a pleasure to drive this fabulous road.

The road through the Valley of the Gods is a graded gravel and clay surface road. If the weather is dry, most 2WD vehicles can handle the road. Actually, It is suitable for passenger cars when the road conditions are dry. We drove the road several times, both with 2WD and 4WD. However, road conditions vary throughout the year with regional weather conditions. Local inquiry should be made during and after periods of inclement weather.
