Drone captures moment alligator attacks swimmer in Florida lake

For the fourth time in the last three weeks, someone in the Tampa Bay region has been attacked by an alligator. This attack, along the shoreline of Lake Thonotosassa in Hillsborough County, was actually captured on video by drone hovering above the lake. JC Defeats was rushed to Tampa General Hospital after a gator bit down on his head. Doctors performed a craniectomy, or surgery to remove a portion of his skull.

We have a lot of gators here in SC too. I had a 7 ft gator in my pond last year in fact. It's pretty rare for one to attack humans. Same in FL. They usually steer clear. Now dogs are a different story. They like to eat dogs. Which is why that 7 ft gator is no longer swimming in my pond. :)

It's lobster season and I free dive every weekend off the coast of Jupiter. Yes accidents can happen but that doesn't mean that I am going to live my life in fear and not do the things that I enjoy.

@@tylerthomas3744 That is a dumb comparison. When you drive you'd where a seatbelt. Comparing that to this is stupid. The water is murky, no visibility, and it's got gators. The equivalent to that in terms of driving would be like driving blindfolded, with no seatbelt, using your feet to steer, going the opposite side of I-95. That's a better comparison.

@Thomas I'm with you..I was born here & absolutely won't get in either above my knees... I'll do the natural springs & the ocean but, only because I worked on being a strong swimmer (I suck more often than I'd like) and I'm scuba certified but a girl can drain an oxygen tank real quick if I'm not 100% controlling my breathing aka anxious. Man, Florida keeps a Floridian on his toes. I admire this guy's drive to survive. Very few things can make an alligator unclamp when it's clamped onto something bleeding. He deserves an ovation for escaping an apex predator. Same goes for anyone who can get free of a shark or bear and live.

I like how he said he forgot his goggles so he didn't even see the gator as if that made all the difference. Wtf are you gonna do even if you do see the gator? Outswim it back to shore? Tbh he most likely could have scared it off. I've kayaked and fish all over within a couple feet of gators and 99 percent of the time they want nothing to do with you. Especially if I slap my paddle at them the swim away in fear. Alligators and very docile, in this situation he probably got too close to a mother with children or something. Alligators don't just see someone in the water and instantly go attack them.

They attack cows too close to the water which are much bigger animals than a human. You ARE on the food chain if you're IN the water.

To the well wishers. I didn't really expect that, and I certainly appreciate it. I just wanted the guy to know there was at least one other person that has gone through something somewhat similar, and the human body is wicked resilient. As for me I'm perfectly fine. Doctors and surgeons patched me up to nearly new condition many years ago. I do have a funny story. After coming out of my coma and realizing I was still alive I eventually got to see what I looked like. My lips were HUGE! I'm like why in the hell did they do that? Keep in mind my entire head was wrapped like a q-tip... but my lips were something out of a tabloid of failed plastic surgery (at least that's what I thought at the time). I wanted them to fix my lips LOL. Turns out my lips were just swollen and after a month they looked normal again. I think it's funny anyway... probably because I'm not much to fuss over such details... but I'm tellin ya... they were frikin huge! LOL.

This is why I moved out of Florida. I just wanted to dip my feet in lake or creek without thinking a gator was going to attack me. Now I live by mountains and forests. Lots of creeks, rivers and ponds with zero gators. People swim freely without a care in the world in my state.

I grew up in Florida as a kid in the '70s. Even back then we knew the lakes and creeks had alligators and moccasins. I don't know why he was swimming there like that.

Tell you what, you do that but make sure you have a camera set up to record your final moments for the next “Florida man” episode. I grew up in Miami and spent a lot of time around gator infested water. I never met anyone dumb enough to tempt gators like that.

You know how to tell if there is a gator in a lake in Florida? You go right up to the water, dip your finger in it. If it's wet, there's a gator in that lake.
