A 100-foot-wide barge squeezed through the 150-foot-wide hurricane barrier opening on a hot and humid Wednesday, carrying three stacked blades, a nacelle, and two vertical towers - the parts for a single wind turbine. Video by Antonio Beltran

I was there,at the hurricane barrier,there was a boat named Rolldock Sky, that went through the barrier at around 8:50 Wednesday morning,with what looked like turbine blades on it. While it was quite impressive visually, I worry about the commercial fishermen and their families,who depend on the ocean for their livelihood, and all the animals of the ocean as well,from massive whales,sharks, dolphins,all the way down to squid,butterfish, etc. What's going to happen to them? 😔

@@EmmanuelVAZQUEZ-wr6zc you are delusional if you think installing electrical components in the ocean will not affect animals that use sonar and echolocation to communicate and hunt.

Fishermen kill more dolphins and sharks and other species in their nets than turbines ever will. (and they don't care) They decimate populations by overfishing because they can't stuff enough into their pockets. They pollute oceans while out to sea where nobody is watching, their boats pollute the harbors with stinking. leaking petroleums. And they b!tch about environmental laws meant to curtail such activities. But they suddenly beat the environmental drum if anybody else dares have business in the oceans. In short they think they own the seas. It's quite gratifying watching them learn otherwise.

How do you dispose of the blades at the end of the service life? Are they recycled?

It's actually long known, and proven that at least 95%of a wind turbine are recyclable! Try study for yourself...

in 20 years what is the future for these blades as there is only one place on this planet to recycle them AND it can't handle blades that big. SO IS IT GREEN TECH??

20 years is almost certainly enough time to develop new recycling technologies. And we don’t have 20 years to make big progress on reducing added CO2 emissions.

There’s already good research that painting the blades with stripes, or even a consistent dark color greatly reduces bird deaths. I can’t understand why companies keep producing white blades. When the sky is lightly overcast, the blades ‘disappear’ into the sky glare.

@@pinehawk9600 money certainly accounts for why existing wind turbines haven’t been painted, but this video was for a brand new delivery. Paint is cheap. Or, instead of incorporating the minerals that make the blades white, switch to darker minerals. That might require some testing to make sure there’s no adverse effects on durability, but would likely be less expensive than the current white.

@@hans-petervanaerschot2596 I have visited many wind farms. The maintenance and infrastructure alone uses fossil fuel power. When on land they ruin the land polluting nearby waterways by disturbing virgin ground and causing erosion. Road must be built to access them. How do those get built. I believe in saving the planet, however in a country the size of the U. S. they are a waste of time and resources. My educated opinion!!!
@samdeejr2000

To make the steel required for wind turbines that might operate by 2030, you'd need fossil fuels equivalent to more than 600 million metric tons of coal. A 5-MW turbine has three roughly 60-meter-long airfoils, each weighing about 15 metric tons.Feb 29, 2016

@samdeejr2000 well they aren't going to stop making steel. So steal for something that can generate electricity, is a very good reason for that steel.

We must find a way to slow carbon emissions from oil, gas & coal, tho i wonder how the vibrations these turbines generate will affect the ocean's creatures that live in the area surrounding these turbines? when the disruption caused by their installation has subsided, hopefully sea life will proliferate, again👍
