Drone Laying Queen - What To Do!

Here is a queen that is only laying drones. I do a little experimenting to see if I can get her to lay workers. Do I need to replace her? Does she start laying workers? How do I know if it's actually a drone laying queen issue or a laying worker issue? Check it out!
Always remember... ask 10 beekeepers the same question and get 10 different answers. :P This is the way I handled this particular situation. Other beekeepers may have some other great ideas, which I welcome in the comments!

One thing to watch out for; Once the cells have been stretched to fit drones, the new queen will tend to lay drones in those cells. If you have frames with many drone stretched cells, it might be a good idea to move them away from the core of the brood nest, or when convenient, replace the frames.

Thanks for the tip! I was actually wondering if the workers would break them down and make worker cells. I’ll definitely move them when I can. Hive is doing great these days with their new queen!

you give me anxiety every time you lift the middle frame first lol drone laying queen is a whole lot better (and easier to queen right) than an established laying worker hive. just subbed and look forward to more videos.

@heatherelliott36 2 года назад
Thank you! Yes, I totally need to stop lifting from the middle first. :P I've actually been making sure lately that I don't do that. Appreciate the tip and thanks for the sub!

Enjoyed your video. Glad you got it straightened out. I would have been afraid that the colony would have killed those nurse bees. I thought you had to shake them off to introduce a frame from another hive.
@heatherelliott36
@heatherelliott36 3 года назад
Thank you! Yes, typically I shake bees off of a frame before putting it in, but a fellow beekeeper suggested keeping the nurse bees on the frame in this instance and to just smoke them real good. They didn’t appear to fight, but who knows after I closed them up. 😬

Another reason for a queen to become a drone layer is if the beekeeper puts too much pressure on her abdomen when picking her up. There is a valve that gets damaged. The same thing can occur due to removing frames from the middle of the hive instead, of beginning at one side as is recommended. The queen can get "rolled" in a cluster of bees and get pinched. At this point, order a new queen, pull 2 frames of bees and brood from another hive and place the frames with queen cage centered in the DLing hive for a candy release and wait for at least 10 days to queen check. Your queen is shot.

Hi Heather. If you get a new queen late in the year they most likely won’t mate as there are no drones around. Thus when it comes spring she wll lay eggs but they will be unfertilized so they are raised as drones. Her eggs are unfertilized as she won’t have a store of drone sperm to fertilize with. And most likely won’t ever mate so the best and sadest solution is the either relace her with known good queen or remove her and give the remaining bees a frame of new eggs from another colony and let them raise a new queen for themselves.
@heatherelliott36
@heatherelliott36 3 года назад
Thank you! Yeah, I was a little sad to have to replace her. My first time replacing a queen. I think you’re right... it was too late in the year for her to be mated. I had let them make a new queen late last year and I was rolling the dice with that. Definitely learned a good lesson that if I need a queen late in the year to try and find a mated one if available or maybe combine hives to get through winter.

@@heatherelliott36 I think replacing her is best I lots of cases. You may have the cost of the new queen but it saves time in the long run and the hive can get back to being productive.

Thanks for watching! I looked for her on the frames and when I found her I used a queen catcher - the stainless steel clip. I call it a chip clip. Those are nice because the queen can’t get out, but worker bees can get in and out of there.

I’m not even a beginner, but can a queen lay drones even if she hasn’t been mated? And if that first queen wasn’t properly mated, is it possible to try a second time for a proper mating somehow? Thank you. 🙏
@heatherelliott36
@heatherelliott36 5 месяцев назад
Great question and I'm so sorry for the super late reply! When a queen is born, she's a virgin queen and her abdomen is much smaller than when she's mated since there's no sperm in it. She can't lay until she goes on her mating flight to mate with a drone or drones from another colony and then her abdomen is filled with sperm. Queens won't mate a second time. They'll only mate once in their lifetime. Can they mate a second time if they wanted to? That's a great question. I would say no because when she's mated, she's heavier and can't fly. If the worker bees stopped feeding her to lose weight like they do when they're ready to swarm, she can fly, but I don't see her flying off again to find another drone or drones to mate with. Excellent questions!
