Ok man you just blew my mind again. That makes better sense than airplane mode, eh? I guess iPhones have the focus settings now so I could totally make up a do not disturb drone flight setting. I think you may have just come up with another video idea. Lol. You are amazing!
Kevin, I agree with the other comments. Great test. I find that a lot of people dont understand the find my drone app very well. While it is not perfect it is meant to get you in the general area of the last known position that the controller was able to locate. In cases of a fly away or even a total power loss you have to consider momentum carries the drone a little farther from the last known point. It should get you close, and if you can do a grid or even a circle sweep search you should always be able to find your drone. Ahhh. Also, if over trees don't forget to look up for your drone as well. Since Find my drone doesn't show altitude it doesn't tell you if your up in a tree or down on the ground. Thanks for sharing.
Couldn’t agree more, brother. I’ve been really fortunate in that when I’ve crashed my drones I’ve been able to locate them without the find my drone app because normally they crash right in front of me. Hahaha. Anyway, I’ve learned a lot about the feature doing these “tests” and the older video. The looking up is a really good tip by the way. Thanks for the advice, man!

Hahahaha. We’re in Florida so that cold front was a little out of the ordinary for this time of year. I’m from WV though so I do like it a little cooler. 50 is where I can take off the jacket. Regarding the 107, I forgot to ask when I got mine if the renewal is free. Also, do you have to go back to the testing site to retest or can you do it online? I’ll need to know in a couple years. Lol
Kevin, another really useful video. I stumbled on this particular one quite late. I have a tip for all those who don't wanna be distracted by all the apps you've mentioned. Instead of switching to airplane mode, you rather use the digital wellbeing app, go to focus mode, checkmark all the apps you wanna have switched off. Now nothing is gonna distract you anymore, but you still have wifi for the relevant things. I hope this helps. By the way: Your channel content is a big positive contribution to the drone community.

Strange, I fly with a Tablet that only has wifi and no cell Data. If the map was loaded it's there. If Not the Map shows drone and stuff on a Blank Map.. Yeah I'm a Dinosaur and dont have a Phone.

My only complaint is Man, you talk fast! lol (No offense, but I'm old, and my brain doesn't think that fast) I had to back up and replay parts of that to let it sink in. But I do that watching TV also, which drives Cheryl crazy! So we each have our own TVs now. She can watch in peace while I'm backing up to replay. 🤣 BTW, I believe you only have to use the remote ID module when you're flying commercially (making money). You can take it off for recreational flying. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You’re kind of right about the modules but kinda not if that makes sense. Haha. Basically, the RID is only required for drones that are registered with the FAA. If you have a drone that doesn’t need registered (under 250 grams) and it’s only used for recreational purposes, the RID isn’t required. But if you use the drone for commercial purposes, regardless of weight, the RID is required. Now you can still fly the registered drone for recreational purposes but since it’s registered, the RID is still required. Basically you can’t take the module off to fly a registered drone recreationally. If it’s registered with the FAA it has to have the RID. So, did that help at all or did I make it worse? Lol
Cool test buddy 😎 Though the Mini 4 Pro was slightly better in this comparison, I love when both models are involved in the test, so I can see that my Mini 2 is old but not obsolete 🤖🚁😎 Knock on wood, I haven't yet had to use the find my drone, but I've also tested it both on my previous Mavic Mini and my Mini 2, and it worked just fine. However; when I crashed my Mavic Mini, the battery fell out, and all sound, lights and connection disappeared 😬 I almost spilled my coffee, at 8:16 😅 Be gentle with poor Dwight's rear opening 🙈🙉🙊

As a Part 107 pilot, you are required to have RID on everything you fly, regardless of weight. I've heard that the Mini 4 Pro automatically turns on RID if you are using the larger (heavier) batteries. Can you manually activate RID when Dwight is below 250 grams? If not, you will need to put that ugly box on Dwight's back too.
Awesome comment and info, Fred. Yea you’re 100% right. Those RID modules really add a bit of ugly to the drones don’t they? Lol. There’s not a way to manually activate the RID on the Mini 4 which I think is unfortunate. When they first released the 4, my understanding was it was activated regardless of weight. I’m not sure why they changed it but there’s a lot of 107 guys not happy about it. I sort of made a positive good when I first bought Dwight though. I accidentally bought the plus package with the heavier batteries so Dwight’s RID works every time he flies. I guess I ultimately paid more for the drone at first but now I don’t need a RID module. Lol. Happy accident?
I believe you placed the RID on top of the GPS module. Do you know if it takes any longer with the RID in this position to get your satellites and does the number of satellites change with the RID in place?
Oh crap! I didn’t even think about that being an issue. I was just trying to put it as close to the center as I could. I haven’t noticed any difference in the satellites but then again I haven’t paid attention to it. I’ll see if I can test that out soon though for sure. Thanks from the heads up, John.
Hahaha. You got a good eye man. If Dwight was a normal Mini 4 pro and under the 250 grams, he would need a transmitter thingy but I made a goof when I first bought him. I ordered the plus package that came with the oversized batteries so he’s always been above the 250 gram limit. And I didn’t even know it until I weighed him for another video a while back. The Mini 4 is pretty smart and knows it’s above the 250 gram limit when it has a plus battery and it activates the built in remote ID signal at that point. I bet I just made it clear as mud didn’t I? Lol anyway, It ended up being a good goof in the end I guess.
Nice test and well done. I know with my Mini 3 Pro or the Air 3 if I have the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on after take-off I get this message. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth automatically disabled to ensure transmission quality. Manually enable them if needed. I was just wondering if you get the same message☺. I know I have tried it a year or two ago and it's cool how well it works. I almost forget how to get to how to find my drone so, thank for the refresher course Lol. @@WeretheRoberts The controller is the RC-2 on my Air 3 and now that you mention it, I'll have to check if it does that on that controller or not. I'm pretty sure it does but then again I'm getting kind of old and forget things like that Haha. It definitely does on my Mini 3 Pro which is the RC-1 controller.
Along with this test have you tried to locate by using the remote id feature/ there are several apps, the module is on my list to get and at 89 that is not bad. I have a mini 2 also

I bought one for each of the Mini 2 drones and I have the plus batteries for the Mini 4 so it’ll emit the RId signal when it takes off and realizes it’s over 250 grams. I haven’t proven that yet though because the drone scanner app doesn’t work on iPhones for the Wi-Fi type RID signal. I don’t have an android to test it out on and can’t justify buying and android just to test it. Lol. I may need more friends and maybe one with an android. Hahaha. I haven’t tried to locate anything with the remote ID feature. Do you mean using the drone scanner app or is there another way I’m not familiar with?
Whenever I go to fly my drones in a new area that I'm not familiar with, I download the map of the area I'm going to be flying in just in case don't have Internet signal. This is another great video by you Kevin. Thank God you didn't really loose your drones. lol

Lol yea man I’ve been using airplane mode for a while but never even considered the find my drone feature in airplane mode. Apparently I didn’t think that through which would be normal. Hahaha. Do not disturb mode has been mentioned as an alternative, too so I’m gonna give that a try and see how it does
Great video. I once had to use Find My Drone to find my mini 2. She jerked right, unexpectedly, and went into the thick FL trees/shrubs. Due to her beeping, I located her pretty fast.
Lol I know it’s not funny but I can totally see that happening. I’ve seen these drones make some weird movements at times. My initial reaction is to freak out and try to correct it then I overcorrect it and instigate a crash. Lol. Yea that happened to me a few times. On a positive note, maybe her beeping and flashing scared all the snakes away from the brush. Hahahaha
Oh wow that’s awesome! I know a lot of times the battery compartment opens up when it’s a horrendous crash (Roscoe P Coltrane reference). I’m assuming the beeping and flashing part didn’t work though right?

Question: since your mini 2 is registered under the 107 and under 250g, would it not have been easier and save you some money buy not buying the remote ID module and just unregistering that drone from the 107? Awesome comment as always, Jim. I’d say you have a really good point here and it is definitely a way to save some money and a bit of a headache. Lol. A part 107 guy can totally keep their sub 250 drone as a recreational status and not need remote ID but I use both of our Mini 2 drones for commercial purposes now that we monetized our channel a couple weeks ago. (After I got the 107 of course lol) I still have that Aspexel drone we demoed a while back and I’m keeping it as a recreational drone. Speaking of the Aspexel, that was a fun test. Lol
I'm happy to see the prices of the remote id modules have come down. Definitely make it a point to mention that most of the newer DJI models are already remote id compliant. Also everyone needs to have remote id unless you're flying in a frea, however part 107 users need a different module per drone but recreational pilots only need 1 for their fleet
What’s funny is I accidentally bought those plus batteries when we got the Mini 4 pro so the RID is activated when we fly Dwight. And I didn’t even know it! Lol. Aloe, I’m also curious what you mean my depends on the fleet. Are you talking about the FPV world? That’s something I don’t know anything about (YET). But I do wanna learn it. That stuff is awesome.
So what if you fly on airplane and when you need the maps could you just turn airplane mode off so you can get a map. Fly better further on airplane loose the drone turn airplane off to get the map and go find her. Or will the map stop working since the drone may not have a signal with the controller.
That’s a really good idea, man. Most times I don’t use the maps when flying other than when I’m trying to get back home quick I’ll switch over and look at the icons and red line shown on the maps. I guess the best reason for keeping the maps updated would be if there’s a crash or something and you need to find the drone. It’s easier to find when the map is accurate. Other than that,‘it’s sort of not even necessary.
@@WeretheRoberts great tip thank you so much for the quick reply. The only thing I keep on when flying is my location wifi, data, bluetooth all off. I have had no issues 2.5kms out at 500m from my backyard to downtown area until I start loosing signal. Dont really think I need to have any better with how far I can get out under the circumstances with houses, trees, buildings and get out 2.5kms.
@@treynolds94dang I’d have to agree. Lol. We very rarely if ever have signal problems and we don’t go out very far so it’s never been an official issue to need the map. Now, we have flown out intentionally and disconnected stuff or turned the controller off to force a return to home but again, I can’t see the map so it’s a non issue. Lol.

Find my drone feature will still work with all the DJI drones. If your Wi-Fi is off on your phone find my drone feature works through the satellite that your remote controller is picking up not your phone if that were true, the mini three pro that I have would never be found because it automatically turns Wi-Fi off when you take off for a better connection. if you turn the Wi-Fi off, you will still see the drone and your location. The map will not be as detailed. That’s all you can still find your drone. As usual, thanks for the great video👍
Oh ok that makes total sense, Michael. The dot is the controller and the triangle is the drone. The phones only role is to display the map, right? Do you fly the 3 with the RC controller or the RCN1?
@@WeretheRoberts exactly I use the built-in screen but when I’m flying my mini two I use the phone I have the mini three pro and the mini four Pro.😂👍 but the mini two is my first DJI drone I have over 1000 miles on that little guy will never give it up. Only problem I ever had with any of my DJI drones was pilot error L O L love your videos. Keep them coming bless you.
If you know where you are flying beforehand, you can to to the location on the mini 3 pro map and zoom in. It will download a detailed map of the area and store it for offline use. This works on most phones too, if you know you will be out of cellular range.

Hey Kevin I downloaded the new DJI Fly update and now I have a problem. I can not fly my drone as a screen comes up saying< "Before You Fly", "No fly spots available nearby" "Recommended Zone". I have tried to get off this screen but no matter what I do this screen stays on, so I can not get to the DJI Fly. Do you know how to fix it?
@fredmunson8603 it really shouldn’t matter which drone you use. DJI recommends being on the most current fly app update regardless of the drone so I have no idea why it would cause a problem. I’ve flown the Mini 2 (Rose) on the new update a lot since installing it. 1.12.8 right?

Oh very cool, Steve. We are in NE Florida up by Jacksonville. We drove through Columbia a few times a year when we go to WV and visit my family. Kristi’s family is in Iowa so we go another way to get to them. Haha.
While the " find your drone" feature may be useful if the drone has a malfunction and flies away out of control, (which is pretty unlikely,} if you fly legally, the drone will always be in your direct sight or your official observer's direct sight, and in the case of a DJI mini 2 or mini 4 not farther away than about 700 feet which is about the farthest you can actually see it. It would not be probable to lose the drone when flying legally. As you are a certificated FAA 107 pilot now, you should certainly know you can't fly a drone off the back of a truck while you are sitting in the truck looking only at your controller. A recreational pilot with a TRUST certificate can not do that either and fly safely.

I was worried when I saw the title. Good to see you didn't actually lose any drones. Haha. You can also download maps to your phone so you don't have to be online to see the maps. Just go to Google maps and save offline map for the area you're flying in. I assume this would work in airplane mode. It works fine on my tablet which is not connected to wifi while I'm flying.
