Drone vs Bald Faced Hornets

I discovered the huge Bald-faced Hornets’ nest on the Hughesnet Satellite Dish. I have been attacked by Bald-faced Hornets in the past and figured the safest way to eradicate them was from behind the screen door while piloting my DJI Phantom 4 Pro. My thought was that the suction from the props would draw them in and be chopped up. I proceeded to fly the UAV near the nest, but the obstacle avoidance prevented me from getting close enough.
After switching off the obstacle avoidance, I was able to fly under the nest. I discovered this from flying under the nest earlier in the day before deciding to record the video. I had already got a large number of the hornets on the first unrecorded flight. What I didn't expect was for them to get aggravated just by the sound of me launching my UAV on the second 'recorded' flight. They remembered the noise from the first time and were attacking my camera on the tripod near the nest. Once I was near or under the nest they started attacking the UAV.
Then I pounded on the wall of the building to shake the dish to provoke more of them to exit the nest. By the end, I’d guess I got over 75% of them. A week later the remaining hornets were gone. It took about an hour to clean the UAV.
Note: No UAV components were damaged during the making this video.

I've been stung by wasps a few times; it hurts but not too bad and lasts maybe 10-15 minutes. A hornet stung me high on the cheekbone (near the tempero-mandibular joint if you've taken anatomy) and it felt like being punched by a good size human. The next morning it was still sore. Hate the bastards; glad to watch them get some of their own medicine.

I was about 10 or 11 when I walked around to the front yard and saw them form a perfect "bee line" before I could even turn and run. I made it a few steps before they started hitting me. 13 hits starting at my upper left shoulder and all the way down to my waist, through my shirt. Each one felt like a punch, not a sting. I somersaulted down the hill trying to crush them as I rolled. I was sick for two days. I will never forget, and never forgive. Now I am a grown man with propane torches, wasp spray, and fire extinguishers. I am still alive, many, many of them have died for the transgressions of their cousins :)

Kind of reminds me of when my neighbor took his weed eater to a hornets nest like that, it was shredded in a flash but he got stung a few hundred times in the process. By the time he was well enough to take a second crack at it, they had repaired the nest and made it 10 times the size. At that point he chose a roofing torch and some gasoline to get rid of the nest. There's still a stain in the driveway where he let the thing burn.

PFFT! Look at those HOME RUN swings, some of them are 10-20 feet away from the nest by the time they hit the ground. and GOOD ON EM. Hornets and wasps both should be hunted to the farthest ends of the earth, and killed in the slowest and most painful ways, for what they did to my childhood. :)

Freight Train we don’t have hornets where I’m located but we do have yellow jackets and red wasps. They keep are spider population in check but I do agree if you stumble across a nest unexpectedly they will let you know. Red wasps aren’t as aggressive as the yellow jackets in my experience but they sure do hurt more lol.

Soak the nest with wasp & hornet spray after dark when they are all at home sleeping. If you don't have that available then use brake parts cleaner. It will shoot more that 10 ft with the little straw attachment and wont stink up the house, although almost any spray will discolor vinyl siding. You don't have to spray the critters. Just soak the nest and they will leave, never to come back.
@fadedexile
@fadedexile 6 лет назад
or he could just set his house on fire, that would work as well.
@rupe53
@rupe53 6 лет назад
Odd you should mention lighting the house on fire, because it doesn't work that way. Burning the house would certainly generate enough smoke to chase them away but they will return to the nest as long as that remains suitable. Spraying the nest (with almost anything) screws up their home enough that they will never return to the same place. If you want to get rid of the colony so they don't rebuild then use a shop vac with a gallon of soapy water in it. Place the hose (extended as necessary) near the nest opening, then fire up the vac for an afternoon. As they fly by they will be sucked in and drown in the soapy water. You may need to repeat this the next day to get them all but it sure beats getting stung while trying to clear a nest.

You'd be amazed at the things that don't burn in a house fire. Not saying that nest can't burn if the fire gets close enough but after 20 years in the fire service I am still amazed at what survives, especially if the local fire department does a good job. Heck, I've seen the FD do a bad job and still leave a few walls standing!

@MrClean417
@MrClean417 6 лет назад
Pretty good job there but I gotta tell ya, after I got nailed by about 30 f these little jerks got quite a bit of satisfaction of sneaking out to the nest with a puffer full of pesticide after dark. These guys are not nocturnal at all, so I stuck the nozzle in, and puffed till the smoke was coming out all over the place. The pesticide is a kind of desicant, basically like tiny glass shards that cuts their carapace. The fluid in them just leaches right out and it kills the nest. I was using a red LED headlight when I hit the nest, which I had found by pulling the front cover off my compost pile. They had built their nest half in the pallet that I used, tore it wide open. NOT a good move for me. Well, in the red light I saw what I thought were a bunch of little moths crawling all over the place, flipped over to the white light and nope, those were dust covered wasps, went right back to the red light. Hundreds of them crawling all over the pile. Compost now. Next day I took the nest and stuck it in the burn barrel. It was about half again as big as a basket ball. Still, even if I took video it wouldn't have been as cool as this one. I'll have to forward it too my disk guy, he already has the drone anyways.

they can carry 16oz (track the drone fishing vids) I would secure a thin dowel and practise flying a bit, then poke it off. Or attach the flame thrower :)

Smart. Aggravate a bunch of hornets you still left with a nest on the side of the house. Trouble free way, make note of where the entrance hole is, return after dark when all the hornets are in the nest and inactive. Get a can of spray foam insulation and prime it so there is foam in the tube. Stick the tube in about two inches and run about 5 seconds of foam and keep spraying while you withdraw the tube. Hornets safely sealed in. No escapees. No flames. No back draft poison in your face. In a few days seal a garbage bag.around nest and take it down.

Sounds like it should work pretty good. They can't move if they are encased in foam! You can also just whack it with a bat into a bucket of water. Or hose it down.

Some morons are going to scream animal cruelty , even though there's enough hornets to kill a full grown man in that hive , much less a child.About 20 years ago , yellow jackets almost killed my father. Lucky for him to get medical attention quickly. Now have vendetta.
