If you fly a drone, then you will probably be aware of birds protecting their air space. In Brighton the seagulls are massive, they don't move out of the way for cars and they will steal your lunch! I can usually work around problems, however the seagulls come to me when I am flying a drone, and there is a danger that they will collide with my drone.
For the last six months I have installed some orange stickers on my drone in an attempt to scare them away. Does it work....?
Link to the stickers that I bought on amazon below (not an affiliate link and not that great at sticking to the Mavic 2 Pro!)

The gear I use to make my content (although this is always changing!)
Sony A7iv + 20mm 1.8G - My main RU-vid camera for shooting out on location.
Canon EOS R + 16mm F2.8 + Zhuyin Crane M3 - I use this for a combination of stills and video B-roll
Sony A7iii - this is my primary stills camera that works with native Sony lenses and all my Canon EF lenses on the Sigma MC-11 adaptor
Canon 5D3 - I use this camera when I use my EF glass and there is no benefit in adapting
DJI Mavic Pro 2 - My first drone, and I can’t see me replacing it. It’s amazing for both stills and video
Go Pro Hero 8 - for adverse weather conditions that my other cameras might not survive!
Insta360 - X3 & One inch edition - for 360 degree video and BTS content
Microphones - DJI Wireless Mic, Rode Wireless Go, Rode Lav Go, Rode Video Pro+, Rode Video Micro
Photo Tripods - Sirui ST-124 with Sirui ballhead, Peak Design travel tripod
Video Tripods - Benro + spikes, Switchpod, K&F travel tripod + Gorillapod
Monopod - Sirui P-325FL
Camera bags - Manfrotto, Lowepro, Peak Design, K&F and Crumpler
Photo Filters - Nisi V7 + Nisi filters, H&Y magnetic filter system
Video filters - Freewell magnetic NDs, H&Y Revoring, Hoya Variable ND
All of my cameras have Arca Swiss plates to connect with the Peak Design Capture Clip and compatible tripods.
Video editing software - Adobe Premiere Pro
Video editing on the iPad Pro - LumaFusion
Photo editing - Adobe Lightroom, photoshop, Artisan Pro X, Silver Efex, Color Efex

My solution to the problem was to get rid of the drone altogether and duct tape a GoPro directly to the sea gull🤣

As long as it was my gull and it comes back on command, I need the footage for my video 😂

I’m still working on that. The trail of birdseed idea didn’t really pan out (damn those pigeons)😂

Every single time I fly my drone near the seafront I'm swamped by armies of angry, angry little birds 😆

Oh wow those stickers really seemed to work - they _always_ nose dive me around that pier!

I put the stickers on last November I think, and I have seen an improvement, so I keep them on. I don't think is gets rid of the problem entirely but they certainly lost interest quicker.

Personally I would adapt the drone to have a flame thrower, problem solved, now that would make it an interesting flight 🤣.

It happens a lot when I am in Brighton, i have not had such a close call as i did in this video before though! As soon as I leave the tourist areas of Brighton (where the seagulls get fed) then I don’t seem to have an issue. Even just a few miles down the road on the South Downs.

I got a new DJi Mini 4K and today was my 1st ever flight, I was in blakers park Brighton and got surrounded by Seaguls so I landed quickly and safely. 😅

It’s stressful isn’t it! I have to do a lot of commercial rooftop surveys in Brighton with my drone and the seagulls all gather around and start to circle the drone. The proximity sensors start to go a bit mad and my heart rate goes up! Touch wood, they have not connected with my drone yet, but I tend not to change direction as they swoop just in case they misjudge where the drone is going and clash with it. Other than that, I do find that the bold colours on the drone has improved the situation.

I was in the Azores in July and whilst flying my drone over the sea three angry Terns (Terns are always angry) took up the chase. Certainly gets the heart racing eh, but thankfully managed to return it safely without any harm.

It’s a good opportunity to use sports mode and get the hell out of there! FYI I see that you have a YT Chanel and they have added some numbers to the end of your username. I hd the same issue. I googled how to get rid of the numbers and I was able to go into the settings to do so. You might want to change it to ensure you keep your account name. Your Devils Dyke drone video looks very similar to the conditions I got there one morning and I made a video about.

@@benharveyphotography Do you know, I noticed those numbers last night and couldn't understand how I hadn't seen them before. Thanks for the tip, I'll remove them now. That morning I had at Devil's Dyke, similar to your video, there was actually too much fog that obliterated all the detail. I was able to get some footage, but then the wind picked up, and because I have the Mini 3 Pro it was really struggling in the wind, and I had to keep bringing it down. Had to give up eventually, but I was happy with what I'd got. Your video was the inspiration for me to head down there by the way, and I think you managed to do better than I! Will definitely have to get down there again at some point and hope for a little less fog.
@benharveyphotography
@benharveyphotography 10 месяцев назад
@craigdenfordphotography hopefully you find a way of removing the numbers. I remember that morning at Devils Dyke for a reason, it was really cold as well as misty and my drone actually landed itself and it had ice in the blades from where the mist had frozen. The only time it has ever happened. Secondly, in the rush of getting the drone up in the air I had a really strong ND filter installed, and I think all the photos are videos had to be shot at the highest ISO. Nobody notices but me, but the images and video could have been cleaner if I was prepared. I think I will head back there at the next opportunity of mist.

@@benharveyphotography Sounds very disconcerting, but glad you got the drone back in one piece. I also had a bit of a moment whilst there - due to the wind it took longer coming back than usual and the battery ran down very quickly. Thankfully I managed to get it near enough to home that when it began an emergency landing it was within a few yards, but it set the heart racing. Have you tried running your images from your visit through DXO Pure RAW? They updated the plugin fairly recently so you can now run it on your DJI raws. I've had some fairly decent results from it so worth a try. Managed to get the numbers removed from my YT account, so thanks again for the tip.

A great & interesting video as usual Ben, though, a little shorter than normal. If the bright orange stickers seem to work at scaring off seagulls but they don't adhere well to your drone, would you consider giving your drone a bright orange paint job? I'm sure you could find round numbered stickers for your batteries easily enough.

Cheers Chris. I never really know how long the video is going to end up until I have edited it, but you get a general idea when you import the footage. The sweet spot for most peoples attention span is sub ten minutes. Regarding the stickers, I suspect that if I spent more money on a better brand then they might adhere longer. I could probably mask off some of the drone and spray it - but I would regret that if I ever came to sell it!

@@benharveyphotography Ben, there is the resale value to consider, of course. To be honest, I hadn't thought that idea through far enough. I wonder if anyone makes silicon skins for drones. I've had them in the past for a couple of DSLRs & my Godox AD200 flashes. The Godox ones are one yellow & one orange. The bright colours do stop people from wandering into them when shooting without a softbox attached.
@benharveyphotography
@benharveyphotography Год назад
I do enjoy seeing customised cameras (skins) or similar - but I end up switching cameras every couple of years, so I do need to think about resale value and whether stickers would leave a horrible glue on the camera body that requires some chemicals to get them off. The goods news with these basic stickers is that they are still on the drone 6 months later, just a bit turned up at the edges.

Whatever the species is that we have in Brighton, they are massive and they don’t even get out of the way for cars in the street. They have become accustomed to a diet of tourists chips and ice cream as well!

Aren't you meant to have your operator ID on the top of your drone? Or is it just to small that i can't see it.

Yes you do, not on the top of the drone though, as you would have to put it on each of the batteries. It’s on the side of my drone, but I made sure it is out of focus as I don’t want my ID on the internet.

When I was getting into drones I was worried about this being an issue. But I passed my exams, i register it every year, I follow the rules and I get insurance when I do commercial work and I have never been asked for any paperwork or challenged ever. There is a good YT channel called Ian in London that is worth watching if you are into drones.
