Drone Wars 4: FPV Drones Dominate Film Sets and Battlefields

The most dominant form of drones in the modern battlespace are the simplest. Bare-bones disposable FPV drones are the most effective UAVs in the Ukrainian conflict and the cheapest to build yourself. It's rare that combat and hobbies are so overlapped...

@@AdamWeatherall "distributing the information"... there's not a ton of "information" in there, but there is some hype. We don't need the publicity. Those curious and intellectually equipped will find the information they seek, elsewhere. To give the average T-Rex Arms viewer the impression that they can have some novel "weapon" for a few hundred bucks is NOT what the industry needs. You should know that, Mr. high-level...

The first countermeasure is knowing there is a drone operating in your area. An SDR capable of 2.4/5 GHz or frequency analyzer like the TinySA Ultra with an appropriate antenna will show the FHSS of the controller and the video link. Unfortunately there is no publically available database of consumer drone hardware with their signals displayed like on the signal id wiki. Companies have built proprietary databases for their own anti-drone hardware, but nothing open source exists yet as far as I know. Once you have some early warning from picking up RF, I think the next countermeasure is to hide and stop moving. Just like with thermal imaging, movement is going to catch the operator's eye. Despite the speeds these drones are capable of, the operators aren't always going to be going full speed to conserve battery of a one way device, especially if they havent ID'ed a target. I've seen some videos of Russian infantry shooting drones with shotguns they were carrying with them. Certainly not ideal but what other options do we have? If you have some early warning, are able to take cover, can start jamming or at least intoduce more noise into the control and video signals, and maybe are even able to quickly DF the direction the drone is coming from, maybe you could have the shotgun pointed in the right direction to save your squad. It's the only workable thesis I've been able to come up with for a prepaired citizen without dedicated SIGINT assets and AAA with proximity/timed airburst munitions as recently shown by a Rhinemetal anti-drone swarm gun system, which obviously none of us could afford even if they would sell us one. The only other option I've been able to come up with is carrying a yagi antenna with a radio connected capable of producing enough power to jam the control or video system far enough away before the explosive payload is a threat, but this still requires early detection and direction finding, and now one of your guys has to carry a good size yagi instead of a dual use shotgun. IDK, I'm glad T.REX is producing these videos, I hope y'all can give us some more ideas on how to deal with these things on the modern battlefield that is probably coming to our neighborhoods.

@RealBenAnderson
@RealBenAnderson Месяц назад
It’s going to be near difficult if not impossible to distinguish the 2.4Ghz signals from WiFi and IoT devices. Jamming is really the only effective way to deal with these things, and that doesn’t require any knowledge of them. Just leave it powered on and it works. As far as drones stopping and hovering so you can shoot them down, those are not the FPV drones this video is discussing. Those are spotting drones which move much slower and stay at higher altitudes and are not meant to be disposable. The FPV drones don’t even take off until a spotter has identified a target. Watch Garand Thumb’s video with the Ukraine fighters, they talk about this quite a bit. You can shoot down the spotters with a shotgun and bird shot, but an FPV headed for you will still hit you even if you do manage to hit it while it’s going 100+ MPH.
@TheTrinityDawn117
@TheTrinityDawn117 Месяц назад
@@RealBenAnderson In an urban environment I agree completely. The amount of wifi signals would require very specific equipment to pick out the signal. I'm looking at a rural setting, where there may be several acres between houses and you're trying to defend a homestead. I've got a spectrum analyzer headed my way in the mail right now, in a few days I'll see how crowded the band is when in BFE and how realistic it is to be able to identify it. Thanks for pointing out the GT video, that was one I hadn't watched yet, I'll have to go do that now. It's good to see the tactics employed. I agree that jamming might be the only solution, but in terms of emissions control and not being DF'ed, that certainly isn't something I'd want to leave on all the time, as it would just be a beacon to one's position.
@RealBenAnderson
@RealBenAnderson Месяц назад
@@TheTrinityDawn117 I know this is just my opinion, but I’m convinced the next American conflict will take place exclusively in urban environments. If I’m right, DFing drones, or drone jammers, will be impossible, because they’ll both be mixed right in with all the WiFi signals being emitted by every router and every IoT device and every single phone and smart watch every person is carrying. Nobody will be able to pin down a single signal because they will all be on top of each other constantly.
@zerotasteguy

you can look up the channels fpv drones use, for the controller/radio expresslrs, crossfire and ghost are the most used, iirc they all use either channels around 900mhz or around 2.4ghz. For Video systems, all of them use frequencies around 5.8ghz, the exact frequencies can be seen in some tables online, Oscar Liang has some. Though jamming the video link would be more than enough, imagine blinding a soldier... for jamming those channels, on video just sending higher wattage on the same channel is enough, AKK sells a 10w video transmitter which would be enough to overwrite any other signal in the air. though you would need morethan one to jam multiple drones once you've found the channels... you can also just listen in to the signals of the drones coming in, one person in front of the screen that displays all channels is enough, once any signal appears, you can jam that channel...

A few corrections: 'Return to home' is possible in the latest versions of Betaflight, provided that you have a GPS installed ($10, easy to do). Also, not every drone can take 18650 batteries; they just can't handle a lot of power draw. They're used, but mostly in less agile, long-range drones.

8:55 A large factor holding back the operational range of most FPV equipment is the frequencies they run at. The 5.8GHz range is very common for VTX operation, and these microwaves are easily absorbed by the environment. Additionally, the power that these modules use isn't enough to go very far. I'm interested in how the privileges of a HAM license could be leveraged to improve the range of an FPV. This would allow for much more power than consumer equipment, and allow the use of frequencies that propagate more efficiently. Something like an FPV signal repeater would be more feasible with HAM privileges as well...
@jackjederstrombergman4987

I do know that hams have done rv airplanes and that industry. The advantage is we have a higher power output option. We do have privileges that operate in the 5ghz. Bandwidth is not a problem as they would be using the same mode as it already does. There has been firmware written to replace the factory firmware for popular wifi routers to use some extra channels in the wifi range, also there is Amatuer TV using transmitters to send video feeds back from the rc airplanes as well. This may open an interesting rabbit trail for me as well.

The biggest constraint with higher power is video transmission is power consumption/heat management. My 400mW vtx can't be on for more than a couple minutes without air moving past it or it overheats. Even though some VTXs are down at 1.3gHz, there is a lower limit where the amount of data required is too much. Doing repeaters is an option that adds latency.

Then I got into guns, during the whole Covid mess and riots situation. It's amazing how much more confident I am in the drone world, but I'm astounded to see all of these worlds blending together. Heck, I now use 3d printing to make more firearms related things, than drone things. I excited that I have good experience across the board with drones and printing, need a lot more with guns, and I'm so glad I have something in the mind bank for the future. I can see maybe occasionally hitting and wounding or killing a single individual target, but I really question these drones carrying enough ordinance to take out any kind of armor. These drones may go 200mph carrying a tiny camera, but they arent going to hit those speeds carrying any kind of ordinance. If you watch the full video that was excerpted in here, they do indeed target an armored vehicle, but it has already been destroyed. And all we usually see in combat footage is the drone camera going blank as it hits a target and seldom see if any damage is done. The drones I am seeing in most of these videos ain't going to go fast enough with enough weight to do much damage to avoid being taken out by a shotgun. Plus, when carrying any weight, they are loud af. Long range sniping and ieds are still orders of magnitude more effective, and far more likely to be an actual threat.
