Drop-In Anchors for Concrete - Hilti vs. Simpson

I've been using Hilti 409492 drop-in anchors for a while. They're about $1 each ($50 for a box of 50). There are a number of other brands including Simpson, Wej It and Powers. Simpson is a pretty well known brand with quality products. What surprised me is a box of 100 is about $16 SHIPPED from Amazon. So sixteen cents each vs. a dollar each for the Hilti. Figured I'd test them side by side to see if the Hilti performed better or something to justify the extra cost...

So what did we learn? Both anchors are stronger than whatever that unquantified shitty eyebolt was. At the same time if you tried this with anything stronger I'd be worried about your safety being so close to the forces you're generating. The potential for hardened metal shards to blast you in the face with a better eyebolt would be high.

Why so hard on the eye bolt? The eye bolts are your basic turned, 1/4 - 20 zinc coated eye bolt. Each eye bolt is has a working load limit of 50 pounds. The signs I install are usually around 15 pounds and I use at least two eye bolts per sign. So these are more than sufficient for my purposes. As far as my safety, you're right, a face shield would have been a good idea. Thanks for the concern.

I appreciate the type of content ur striving for. If u use software that allows for edits and time-lapse, u can nix pacing issues. Im let down by the content because it only showed that Eye-bolts break under identical circumstances as opposed to testing the actual anchors. Keep the latter statements in mind when producing further content! :)

Good test thx for ur time. Good to know what kind of weight those anchor pop out not the hook. Those 2 jacks have to move exactly the same distance because if they not the anchor is more difficult to pop out

You made the double hydraulic pull up jack yourself or bought it from some store?

As a distributor of several different brands and types of drop in anchors, I would like to point out that regardless of the brands you prefer, CODE dictates that the use of a drop in anchor anywhere above your shoulder is prohibited! basically due to 'cracked concrete testing'. We still sell a buttload of them , I'm sure for all applications, but we bring this fact to their attention at the time of purchase to make sure they are aware.

I use powers anchors when forming walls against existing concrete to tie the forms together, I'm pretty sure if they can hold up to the pressure from vibrating concrete they'll hold up to just about anything you could throw at them.

Awesome. I love hilti shit and use the same anchors and same bit and had the same concerns... about price, about weight and about install techniques. (I typically dont clean the holes but I'm also typically working overhead) the hilti drop in anchors are awesome. I haven't used other brands. But I installed thousands in a parking garage building for pipe to run electric wires through them for lights/exit signs. The 3 things I found that they could improve on is obviously 1.price! 2.you cant use that 2 piece bit with the hilti dust removal system. 3.they are not hollow (like lead sinkers) so if u try to use different hardware or guess wrong on the depth they will bottom out. Unlike leads that allow u to drill a deeper hole and stick any reasonably sized screw into the hole. It gives u more options in a pinch. With the hilti mdi anchors u need to use washers with longer hardware to pad out the screw head. I know u should use the proper size but when the proper size is an hour away at a store, you use what u got. But awesome vid. What were the eye bolts rated for? You should run it back with the info u got now

No better anchoring system, excellent value for money.

Surely this was just a test of the eyebolts from what I saw,if you had used overkill eyebolts it would have dragged or snapped one or the other out which surely was what the whole point of the demo was,wasn’t it??
@e4d578
@e4d578 3 года назад
Yes and no. It did reveal that the failure point would be something more consistent and perhaps quantifiable. The eyebolts are the point of failure and not the anchors, which is good because the engineering specifications for those are much more easier to come by and not prone to installation factors, etc. So in some way, is was revealing, and to a certain extent, a relief to see that the anchors and the screw system will hold, but that the metal itself will fail before it being ever dislodged (possibly).

Thanks for doing the test, it just goes to show how much we over build things. Using 2 or 4 anchors rather then just one. I think a quarter inch drop in anchor has something obsurd like a 2000lbs max pull out if properly set in 3000psi concrete. I love Hilti stuff as much as the next guy and I think they have some truly innovative solutions but alot of their products seem to be really over priced. All the anchors have to meet code standards. So really they should all perform to a certain level.

Remind me to never come near anything you install. The reason for using 2 or 4 anchors isn't just for load capacity, which, btw, wasn't even demonstrated in this video. There's this little known design concept used in relation to safety critical applications called SINGLE FAILURE PROOFING. You might want to read up on that.

You'll never know when you have too many braces on your forms but you'll definitely know when you don't have enough.

good test sir , but what if the niels was stronger than that?! wich drop-in will standing for the last, i believe that hilti is for profissional project , and its great for loooooooong time life ... thanks a lot

why did you not put 3/8 inch bolts in (say #8 bolts) instead of eye bolts? Or you could have used eye bolts which have a complete eye & do not have an open end. But that carabiner would probably not hold. Methinks you could have used a stronger connector than that type of carabiner.

Should close that quick link on top. It’s less then half as strong when open.

Perhaps the down votes are because he didn't explain clearly what he was trying to prove. Basically he was showing that both inserts are far stronger than the eyebolts so there is no need to waste money on the hilri ones.

Sorry to lose time with you...but what do intend to prove here?...or better what is your conclusion? No force mesured...eye bolts brake and you are not testing them. Im not hilti fan. I use hilti, fisher, wurth or others

Zero Engineering, nor Safety taken into account here. A Dude with extra tools and time on his hands. Hilti published load values have 4 to 5 times Safety Factor built into them. Therefore, they take into account for improper installation and/or human error.

Doesn't have to be a scientific test. It's a real world, practical test and for most of us that's all that matters. If you want to test it to failure then go right ahead but a demonstration with a known, all be it nominal, force is fine by me.

Totally agree, he didn’t even have a load meter to test at what load it failed at. Hell, all that was tested here was if non welded eyebolts would unbend.
