Most people in the industry are aware of the dangers posed by Scala Kits. Many of us have heard stories about crushed fingers and ‘de-gloved’ thumbs, however the design of the Scala has remained unchanged for a long time. One thing that has been discussed frequently is a way to secure the drop weight when not in use, to make the Scala safer to carry.
Geotechnics have recently designed a safety feature called the “Drop Lock”. Its purpose is to prevent drop weights from sliding down the guide rod and hurting the hands/fingers of technicians while being transported.
The design consists of PVC conduit with a slot that has been machined down the length of one side, allowing the sleeve to be clipped on to the guide rod of the Scala. It is a simple, cost effective design that can be taken on and off easily. For any feedback or questions on the design, or if you want some of your own please feel free to get in touch!
