I am in a wheelchair, and a drop-side crib would allow me to reach my child. I don’t know what other options there are out there for parents in wheelchairs. Bassinets would work until the child can roll over, but then the mattress must be lowered and the child would be too young to stand. I am glad drop-side cribs are off the market, but it complicates the lives of a demographic who need access to their babies.
This is tragic. I wish they would make modifications to the drop down cribs though and re manufacture them. As a short gramma, I can’t reach my grandson to get him out of the crib. The mattress is lower so he found climb out but my feet leave the floor when I’m trying to get him out.
My baby is currently sleeping soundly in her high quality second hand drop side crib. A drop side crib is perfectly safe as long as it is well maintained and not broken. We don’t ban cars or bathtubs, and those cause many more deaths than 32 in 10 years time.
Thank you for the warning. I found this when searching 'how to put together a Jenny Lind drop side crib'. Someone gave it to my husband for my grandchild, and it was probably from the late 90's. I'm buying a new one. Whether it's legal or not, the risk is not worth any amount of money.
We have a (cheap) Jenny Lind, drop-rail crib that made it through six children with no issues. (It was purchased at Sears in 1997.) I think the difference between our crib and these ones being recalled is that there is no plastic on our crib outside of the teething rail cap.
Same here. Ours made it through 3 kids and now occasional grandkids no problems. Ours, purchased in 1986, has metal rod bolted and screwed into the ends. Not plastic. My wife said it was so much easier on her back to be able to lower that side. The problem is imoral college boys, educated beyond their intelligence, cutting corners to make a couple more bucks.
I got to this site because I couldn’t sell a well-designed quality Stork Craft drop-side crib on Craigslist. After watching this video, I inspected the crib I was anticipating selling. None of what is said here is true in the Stork Craft 05580-744 with the drop-side. It’s a sad day when we, the people, let government agencies tell us what is good or bad. Just about any product can be cheapened, but to throw all these companies in one category is absurd. I think it’s time that people should learn how to think for themselves.
Exactly! I got my drop side crib second hand. It cost $2000 back in 2001 when it was originally purchased. It’s high quality and entrapment is impossible in it. Sounds like parents using cheap broken cribs was more the problem than the drop side crib itself. A fixed side crib can’t break as easily - the only reason why it’s “safe.” All government regulations related to baby products are written with the most brain dead, irresponsible parent in mind.
It never hurts to learn things about baby/child care products even if you don't have babies/kids....my kids are grown (born 1995-2000) but they all had drop side cribs...the first one barely made it through my 2nd baby...the last born in 2000 had 2 cribs...the first lasted 7 months cuz the person helping me move broke one of the plastic sliders and the drop side wasn't safe anymore...the 2nd crib for that baby lasted a looong time... I think it went through 2 other kids after I gave it to a family member
@@starlingbaez6681 even young ones like yourself can learn about things that maybe you aren't into... maybe a family member expecting a baby and bought a second hand crib with a dropside. . you can point out to them they aren't safe anymore cuz they may be unaware of it...who knows, maybe you could save a baby's life with this little tidbit of knowledge ... I know a lot of things that I call "random knowledge" that I didn't particularly set out to learn about but could be helpful to someone else
It is NOT illegal to own a drop down crib at home. You need to buy a crib immobilizer kit to fix them. (about ten bucks) The drop down cribs are not sold anymore and illegal to use in a child care facility.
