The Smith-Morra Gambit (1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3) produces enterprising compensation for White via free-flowing development and open lines. When my opponent gives me a pair of opportunities to land knights on b5 and d5, I don't hesitate. #Chess #ChessInstruction

First you started playing the Sicilian, then more 1. e4, and now even the Smith-Morra! I like your slow evolution toward GM Gingerhood :P. Phenomenal game BTW and very happy to see so many uploads. Small note: In Esserman's excellent book, he mentions, "We dissect the superior 9. Be3 later in the advanced material. Unlike the Kamsky game [Borba (Esserman) vs. Talion (GM Kamsky), Internet blitz, 2005] , here the bishop falling back to g3 makes less sense, as the d-pawn (still on d7) is no longer in the line of fire." You also mention 8...f6, which is what was played in the famous Esserman - Van Wely game. 8...h6, though, isn't wrong. Thanks a lot for the Smith-Morra video, John!

One criticism I want to give, is that with your knight f5 move, you didn't really explain how it's attacking the bishop. I'm rated around 1800 on lichess so I'm not so good with tactics, and it took me a little bit to realize Nxe7, Qxe7 followed by Bd6. I can imagine many of your viewers didn't notice that at all, especially those who may be beginners. Otherwise, brilliant commentary, you're my favorite chess explainer on the internet (: Edit: Wow, I doubted you, you actually did mention it, a little too quickly for me. I apologize. 😅 Ok now I can say with full confidence that you're the best chess teacher 💕

I can still record a bit on lichess as of now, but eventually 100% of my recorded/streaming play will be on Chess.com. I know a lot of you guys will be disappointed that I won't be recording lichess arenas and whatnot. lichess is a fantastic gift to the chess community, and I have only positive things to say about them. Please know that I didn't make this decision lightly! Ultimately Chess.com offered me a career-changing opportunity I don't think any other site can match, and I'm really excited to be a part of their push to professionalize chess (especially when it comes to streaming). I'll still be producing as much of the same content as ever, just on Chess.com." Fair play to the bloke I reckon, it's comparable to signing to a record label after blowing up in the music industry.

Hey John I’ve noticed you don’t seem to spend much time thinking about how to use your opponents pieces but instead only on good moves. I feel most great players really were always carefully trying to manipulate their opponents rather than only good solid moves but this may be something you’re always considering and just don’t really mention. Curious on how much emphasis you put on this personally? This was a great game though big difference in your play over the last few years as I’ve started watching your more recent videos now
@tomscott904
@tomscott904 5 лет назад
By the way I didn’t mean getting the initiative but overall baiting moves to exploit weaknesses and players to overextend themselves etc... I just played this game as an example playing on all the ideas of founding principles people are taught. Giving them a big centre. I get this example would never work with high rated players but the fundamental ideas hear of exploiting what people think are good ideas. I think it’s very clear why my opponent made the moves they did and obviously blundered esp not playing Bd2 and then esp the recapture with the queen instead of the king. Also realize this is a ridiculous example but the game was: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 e5 7.Nf3 exd4 8.cxd4 Bg4 9.d5 Ne5 10.Bb5+ c6 11.h3 Bxf3 12.Bxc6+ bxc6 13.gxf3 Bb4+ 14.Bd2 Bxd2+ 15.Qxd2 Nxf3+ Then resign of course. Seems clear to me pshycoligically why they played like this. Get a big centre, avoid the queen trade, try to castle with check, recapture with the queen not the king, not wanting to retreat the bishop and maybe especially the check with the pawn guarding etc... I’m also only a casual player and don’t study any openings or lines but I do look over tons of GM games to see the ideas being played. I obviously understand some basic theory and am considering looking at more but I basically only play over the board and try to formulate my own ideas
@TSgitaar
@TSgitaar 5 лет назад
I feel that John is looking for candidate moves first, and when he finds an interesting move, he then looks for possible responses from his opponent. Its a very disciplined approach and hard to fail imo. John always has a very clear plan and tends to stick with that throughout the game. If you play enough strong moves with a clear plan, your opponent will have to react to you. I think that is the main idea behind this approach. Its a little bit self centered, but I don't think that you will make many mistakes playing like this. I always want to figure out what my opponent is doing first and then think about my own moves. Make sure that I understand my opponents plan and that I don't miss anything. How can I stop his plan and manipulate his pieces to make my plan work? Refuting ideas. I feel that a player like Hikaru is doing that too. Constantly evaluating and adjusting. There are different approaches that will work, I guess.
