FULL RESULTS-SLOPPY STAGE 2 TURBO CAM VS THE WORLD, 10 CAMS
ALL RUN BACK TO BACK ON THE SAME 4.8L. Here in part 1, we ran 10 different cams on our 4.8L test motor. before comparing them all under boost, we ran them all NA, comparing them to the factory LM7 cam. After running them NA, we will follow up with the same test under boost with a VS 7875 gen 2.

its neat to see how similar they are in this configuration, as ive seen this too, so when people ask what cam and i would say, one that opens the valves, or one that is 210-230 ish will be fine with mild events again i agree the 216 st1 is a better cam for a 4.8 but people are always upset there is no chop, so also since people have no idea what they want and would rather chop than make better power average the ss2 was born, and i started calling it sloppy stage 2 because its a joke, based off everyone's needs to have stages. the funny facts are the 200$ price tag, and the fact that as far as we can dig up it was designed by GM and ordered from Elgin Industries to be tested in development by GM engineers since before the Engine was released, so no one can say that this cam is a copy or Chinese is the absolute icing on the cake

This is Richard’s masterpiece. Saw this when it came out 3 years ago and it opened my eyes to what these shorter duration, higher lift cams do on the smaller LS motors. When you consider some of the newer cams that have come out since, they’ve sort of continued that trend and Richard was onto that way back in 2020. Bravo!

Thabk you so much for this test, and doing it NA first. I've said it a million times. I break my cam choice down by whether I'm willing to buy a converter or not. If so, am I willing to buy new pushrods or not? Then by price. 10 ft/lbs down low, or 5 HP up top is not going to change anyone's life. Hell, but the cheap cam, tell people you bought an expensive cam if you just want to sound cool, no one will ever know.
@ZackNakazora1
@ZackNakazora1 4 года назад
So what would your cam of choice be for 3200 stall. 862 ported heads but small valves and tbss intake? 216/218 and then add nitrous? Makes a pocket rocket outta the 4.8
@rustysausage69
@rustysausage69 4 года назад
@@ZackNakazora1 My buddy ran a 217/224 cam in his 5.3 truck engine, stock 706 heads stock injection. His converter was a 2400 stall. You could probably get away with a mid 220's or low 230s duration cam (.600-630 lift) with a 4.8 and 3200 stall. Make sure you have the piston-valve clearance for that much cam though if you're running stock bottom end. It really depends on the displacement atop a couple other things (IMO). Larger displacement will "flash" more quickly than a lower displacement that has an identical camshaft because it makes more torque; because of that, you can run a lower stall speed with larger displacement. Because of fluid dynamics of the converter, a higher torque applied to it on the engine side will raise flash RPM to the output side. It also depends on induction and rear gear, because both of those will change the RPM range and load characteristics. I'm running the same "3000 stall" converter (brake stalled 3200, flashed at 2800) in my mild setup as i will be in my wild setup. My new setup (11.5:1 6.0, 235/251 .630 cam, CNC 11 degree LS3 heads, EFI, massaged LS3 manifold) won't be getting a higher stall than my previous setup (9.0:1 6.0 LS, 232/236 .600 cam, 243 heads, single plane, 750 carb). Much bigger cam, much higher compression, wild heads with less RPM dependent intake, same displacement, same gear ratios.
@TheDrivewayEngineer
@TheDrivewayEngineer 4 года назад
@@ZackNakazora1 you're misunderstanding me. I don't choose a cam based on the converter. I first decide, am I willing to foot the expense of a converter. If yes, I go bigger, if no, I go smaller.

That torque cam produced a very happy looking curve. The peak numbers might not be there, but it'll put more smiles on faces when the throttle is pegged in real world conditions than a dyno chart. Smack an LSA blower on there and it'd be an absolute weapon that was still drivable and streetable enough to drive it to work every day.

If you decide to do a Round 2 on a 5.3 or 6.0 might I suggest cams with larger differences between them to really elucidate what effect the different valve events have on an LS. Like a reverse split or something with a lot more exhaust duration similar to many LS3 grinds.

I've crunched the numbers. The best cams had intake valve closing from 65*-71* with about 2 bhp difference. Overlap wasn't an obvious factor. Cams with exhaust valve opening earlier than 79* made less low end torque, and the best performers were around 71*. I'd say an optimum cam for the 4.8 is 276*/276* 0.600" lift, and 112* LSA. A strong performer with good idle and vacuum to run power brakes. I'd extend that to the 5.3 with 706 heads and stock intake manifold.

@@SloppyMechanics Totes. Take number. Divide by 4. Times 5. Bam, 4.8 to 6.0 (same heads) numbers. Wondering about the turbo? Take these numbers and then run through Richard's NA->Boost estimator. What ifs are pretty damn easy to get rough order of magnate figured out.

I'd like to see it on a 6.0 as well, except with larger differences in cam timing. Most of these were all within a few degrees of each other so it's no surprise that their curves looked similar. But what about a cam with a reverse split? Or one with a lot more exhaust duration like many of the LS3 grinds have?

That test would be of useless, everyone here needs to realize that its all about percentages! Identical camshaft, identical compression ratio, identical induction, identical port designs, identical rocker arm ratio, there is almost 0 variables! (Valve size doesn't matter in this instance) Adding the same camshaft to a 6.0 as you did a 4.8 will yield nearly IDENTICAL % power gain as it did in the smaller displacement. The power gain from the very first dyno graphs was 8.6% from the stock 4.8. Given a stock 6.0 horsepower, add 8.6% and thats how much power the camshaft will gain on a 6.0. Call it 435 horsepower. The curve shape will be nearly identical because everything is the same! For reference on how dead-nuts that number is, my past 6.0 setup with .015 bigger lift and 4/6 more degrees of duration cam makes 465 horsepower.

RH makes quarrantine easy! Just watch his videos. So from the group of a dozen LS videos, a mid budget street combo to rule them all has Edlebrock cross ram intake on a high compression LS3 6.2 with a 220/220, 108+4 and extra long tube 1 7/8" and meticulous attention to the exaust after the collectors (3" all the way?) ....And when it's time to get serious, go low compression, wider LCA and twin turbo on the above combo.

Now I have a internal battle between the BTR stage 2 v2 truck cam and the stage 3 V2 truck cam, putting in a mild 2600-2800 converter and stepping up to the stage 3 could negate some low end loss! But, the chances of me seeing the drag strip are slim as I am a broke college student/engine enthusiast, not a great combo XD! I found it interesting that the smaller summit cam stacked up well against the others lower in the rpm range. If you aren't planning to rev to the moon and back, that seems like the perfect street cam for a smaller engine with future boost in mind.

I found most of these cams were pretty close to the same. Slight variations in lift and lobe seps. I would have like to see cam wars with same lift and durations but different lobe seps. Especially with the long tube headers you used I would have liked to see more scavenging numbers and differences. I find it amazing the curves with such a high lsep at the 115 mark I thought that would be better with a 105 sep. great video. That was a lot of work I bet. Good job

My understanding turbo cams is they have less over lap. On forced induction higher overlap blows out the air fuel out the exhaust. With dual over head cam setup you can phase the cams to control overlap on bottom end vs top end using factory ecu programming. That is what Nissan did with their 300z twin turbo which I use to own.
@richardholdener1727
@richardholdener1727 4 года назад
think about this-boost doesn't blow out of the exhaust when the exhaust back pressure is higher than boost-more likely go the other way
@zmanphx

@@richardholdener1727 , Yes forgot exhaust back pressure factor on turbo but not on supercharged so much. Turbo turbine design is big factor.
