Dropping In Super Sketchy Creek (Terrible Idea)

Well I put the group in a pretty shit spot today, there was no reason we had to drop in to this but I wanted to push the guys comfort level. Ended up pushing my own and putting us in danger. Luckily we worked through It and everything worked out alright. Of Course I should’ve done some things differently and I can clearly see that watching things back.

Being able to see everyone’s POV when you tried the first drainage and debating what to do was really cool. Showing what to do in a sketchy situation and educating with commentary afterwards is also something I would love to see more of when these things happen on the mountain

Great video. Something I notice is when things got serious you went from calling your dad Jerry to just Dad. Think it really shows in a time of vulnerability everyone goes back to that security of father/son relationship and the love between them.

As a guy who rides with his son, roughly the same age as Jerry and Matt, my greatest fear is still seeing my son get hurt or killed. As a father you never lose that feeling of being totally responsible, regardless how much experience your son has. AT this moment Jerry is getting it doubly bad as two of his sons are out there. Thanks for keeping it real and not editing out your mistakes and your family's responses to the scenario.

This is such a great real life account of managing avy conditions. Situations like this always create feelings of "shoulda, coulda, woulda" but one thing I felt was spot on was your group communication. Jerry's knowledge was impressive too. Did anyone notice that as avy hazards rise, Jerry's profanity seems to fall? Thanks for sharing!

Our group dropped into something similar last Winter...we ended up in a drainage we couldn't get out of which led to our group spending the night in the woods. Luckily our group was fairly prepared. After a fairly miserable night, we made our way out. Lessons learned....it's DEFINITELY part of sledding. It takes balls to post this Matt. Love your consistency too, you're crushing!

Awesome video! I especially like Jason's riding segments as that's much more realistic for us flat landers that ride in the mountains one trip per year...although Jason is still better! Jerry at 59 years old (my age) is very impressive as well. I wish I had sons that could ride like you, Matt! Again, great stuff!!

I never want to see anyone get stuck BUT at 33:53 when Smash says "lets see if I can do this without doing anything stupid this time," I gotta say .. I was REALLY hoping for an editors cut where the very next second was a sled upside down LOL What a scary start to the vid. As a dad, seeing my two boys in that position would be terrifying. Dont matter their ability .. anything can happen. SUPER glad you guys are good riders and were able to come out of it.

Posted that before the end. Christ, I was almost in tears. Its one thing to ride with your buddies. But the memories you guys are making for your family? Priceless man. You guys are super lucky. Awesome video Mat coming from a search and rescue background this would be a great trainning video on decision making and really brings to light thinking through the plan once everyone's in a safe spot. I now provide safety trainning and would like to use this as a great example of stopping and thinking of the best solution, running that solution by the team to see if anyone can add to the plan. Well done and very humble of you to share, not many extreme riders would do that. Kudos to you on better trainning last year!

Great vid as always. Appreciate your willingness to share a rare miss on the initial avy hazard eval. If you spend enough time in the mtns you will make mistakes now and then, but you course corrected with good communication and respect for the terrain/consequences. Like that your group spoke up when uncomfortable, gave alternate options for comms etc. Good dynamic. It's clear you have a good mtn sense. Always a fine line between comfortable and overconfident when we're able to get out daily. - A guy that mostly skis but likes to braap too. I teach awareness level avy courses in my free time.

The classic look where you ride phenominom. Jason when side hilling is concerned with the slopes and he looks down and sure enough he rides in the direction he's looking. Look where you want to ride and this keeps your shoulders square to the hillside. Never look down.
