Explores the dangerous trend of driving under the influence of illegal drugs and prescription medications.
On any day, at any time, the person driving next to you could be impaired. Increasingly, Nebraska’s health care, safety and law enforcement experts point to a dangerous new trend -- driving impaired from illegal drugs, pills or even common prescription medicines. The threat is the greatest during the evening hours on weekends when as many as one in four drivers could be impaired, according to studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NET’s newest documentary “Drugged Driving” addresses this new and dangerous trend and what is being done to improve safety. It explores how medications can impair vision and balance, cause drowsiness or even render a driver unconscious.
“I had taken a whole bunch of Xanax that night. For some reason, I realized that I was on the wrong side of the road. And I looked up and there was cars coming at me,” said one of the impaired drivers interviewed for this program.
Two recovering addicts share their personal stories of driving while impaired, along with former Husker football athlete Ricky Simmons who served prison time on illegal drug charges before becoming a certified drug counselor.
“Drugged Driving” also looks at research being conducted at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Mind and Brain Health Labs. The lab uses car simulations and real-time driving data studies to learn how brain activity affects real-world behavior. University researchers are examining connections between personal medical needs, reasoning and reactions.
Because Colorado is the first state to legalize marijuana, it is at the forefront of this issue and is focusing on training as well. Loveland Police Chief Robert Ticer discusses the increase of driving arrests related to cannabis and describes new mandatory training. Since there are no national standards for marijuana impairment, officers are learning to become comfortable detecting the severity of the impairment during roadside tests. Citizens are helping with this new training as volunteers participate in “Green Labs” where they consume marijuana and then allow law enforcement to try to identify the source and severity of the impairment as they role play a roadside test without driving.
The program also covers the emerging national priority for educators and law enforcement to find solutions. National experts on impaired driving and drowsy driving were featured at The Nebraska Highway Safety Conference, held earlier this year.

There actually is some miss information in this video and not accurate facts. But it was edited and released in 2017, so I’m sure the stats are up to date and a little bit more in depth then it was then.

I would venture to say you are all users that try to justify it’s use to drive. Typical of our society today. Let’s look at the facts that support our point of view so we can justify our choices.

Medical cannabis doesn’t give you a high like black market stuff does. I have 3 chronic pain conditions that are incurable, require surgery every year to maintain and doesn’t go away even after oxycodone and other medications. I was told my last option is medical cannabis and surgeries. My choices: 1. Give up driving, be pain free but not able to work because I can’t get to work (no public transport where I live) 2. Live in agony 24/7, miss out on half the year after being left in bedridden pain for 2 weeks of every month, go through +5 jobs a year because I can’t function at work due to pain. Either way there is a possibility that I end up jobless and homeless…at least with one option I would be pain free. I don’t drive unless I have to and I don’t drive within 4 hours of taking my medication. After an hour I become functional but I wait an extra 3 hours to be safe. Cannabis stops affecting your ability to function after 3hrs. This video is very outdated and has a lot of misinformation as well. Don’t judge people for using legal medication to function, you’re lucky you don’t have this issue to face.

After watching the video in its entirety, it’s pretty biased. I’m not seeing medical professionals in this video to monitor the statements of the “officers” making the “predictions”. I agree completely with the idea of the video but I would like more educated and medical facts.

Even if accidents go up a little is no cause for concern because lives will be saved elsewhere. I usually wait 4 or 5 hours after a toke and then drive. I smoke every day but just a little . I can tell when I am to high to drive. It is diffrrent thing when it comes to devil's water .

If your saying even if accidents go up a little and is no concern because lives will be saved elsewhere. What about the lives lost and their family's loss a Fathers Mothers Sisters Brothers loss of a loved one. Do you think they would agree with your synopsis. Driving high is driving impaired legalizing another narcotic just threw more fuel on the flame of the problem. And for what ? Money. Lets hope those who lost family members to drugged driving get a lot of it when they sue those who are ultimately responsible for drugged driving..

I just lost my 16 yr old daughter to a high driver. I am desperately compelled to do something, but I don't know what. For her to die in vain is against all she lives for. People, please just don't.

@@angelalackey3521 I'm so sorry for your loss, that is very sad. I think that people need to be educated on the fact that for instance pot still impairs, even if the person feels they are more under control. There's slower reaction times, lane shifting, etc. But most ppl tend to focus on alcohol only. Maybe trying to make some videos and get the word out there that impaired is impaired regardless of substance.

Absolutely and utterly ridiculous. THC impairs your reaction time!
