Underestimated
Music. It is something every human can instinctively appreciate and enjoy but for some it can be much more than that: a passion and a way of life. Underestimated is an entertaining and informative documentary that showcases some of the people involved in the vibrant Drum and Bass subculture in Dublin where all its members are unified by their love of music.
Featuring insightful, revealing and often funny interviews, Underestimated charts the history of the Drum and Bass scene in Ireland and shows the lives of its participants and the struggles they face celebrating the music they love: Drum and Bass. An extremely rhythmic and futuristic style of electronic dance music that can seem highly abrasive, yet is also deceptively sophisticated, intelligent and varied.
From the professional DJs to the devotees for whom Drum and Bass cannot be much more than a hobby, all the interviewees tell similar tales. They relate their discovery and burgeoning love of the music, as well as their efforts to build a collection of rare vinyl records to mix together on turntables. Ultimately their ambition is to play and showcase their skills in clubs and on the airwaves, with all that entails, including promotion, transport and other difficulties.
Ignored by the mainstream for many years and even distant from other dance cultures, the Drum and Bass scene has grown, it's members forming strong bonds with each other, a tribal community that listens and dances to urban tribal music. Continually evolving, Drum and Bass is now becoming ever more popular in its myriad forms, one of which is dubstep. You won't forget the intelligent, dedicated and sometimes quirky characters you'll meet in this film or fail to find respect for their devotion. Perhaps they were once misunderstood and misrepresented but now after you watch this film they'll no longer be UNDERESTIMATED.

I've been listening dnb since I was kid, but I'm from Venezuela and I never had the chance to meet someone involved in the scene of this genre of electronic music. Now I feel that I have many things in common with this artists. This documentary is a cultural contribution to the world, thanks for sharing!

Hey now not all of us Americans , go by the trends. What got me into Electronic music, was my love DnB. Then I explored into other sub genres, and no matter how heavy the drop is or how hard the bass is none compared to the realism and good vibes of dnb.

This video is definitely dragged way too much. It's too long and they got to the point in the first 10 minutes. So I can feel you. But from time to time it's ok to explore some struggles. Even an amazing scene like dnb, doesn't only have positives. The video is dragged. Way too much talking and not enough music but the idea isn't bad. DnB really doesn't do all that well outside UK.

Dirty cousin of dance music whoever first said that showed exactly how little they knew about dance music... jungle was crafted from the breaks just as bboy music was from the breaks which became hip hop... and I don't mean Pop.... house music came after the disco and the disco was killing the break beat but it came more popular when the media called it break dance and then main stream hip hop came to the forefront so we had the acid house scene i was in Blackburn where we had the illegal warehouse parties every week and I went to the hacienda and kitchen in moss side Manchester and it became commercial with way too much piano hand bag house.... rather than the deep and dirty acid like fingers Adonis Armando mike Dunn etc so the hardcore was using break beat speeded up so the real music head's who were skooled by soul funk house bboy electro hip hop etc began isolating the break beat and hip hop samples over house and with reggae bass lines etc and essentially British bboy street sounds or break beat was born and was called jungle techno../ from places like rage etc and the first night for me was 91 handsworth leisure centre Birmingham jungle techno Which rather than hardcore and house all night like the previous raves it was hip hop breaks and I saw it developed and I will always say that the golden era and peak was 94 i had been hammering it with nights like roast jungle fever and many more... when we first heard the name drum and bass we said it was a posh name for posh folks who didn't want to tell their folks they were getting down with the man dem at the jungle jam ha.. after the ragga flavour became popular in the jungle i saw a cool underground scene becoming dark and gangsta with loads of kids in caps thinking it was ruff tuff and dangerous to be in the jungle dance and lots of people producing some good stuff some bad stuff and suddenly everyone and his dog was a dnb fan... jungle is a British thing with an alliance of black white hip hop reggae soul funk etc and it was made by the real music head's for the real music head's... it's good to see how I was in my early 20s and I am now 51 and seeing lots of new things that is full circle back to the original style of jungle and they are respectful of the foundations...big up Ron Randall rap mc moose 5,0 det GQ... Hype and many more...

Wow, the whining. Couldn't get very far before I realized I'd be lead to feel utterly sorry for myself if I watched the whole thing. I suppose it's nothing new to me as I live in the states and I've just gotten a thick skin to it but I think of this a) I can't remember Goldie, Grooverider, Fabio, or any of those guys lobbing self-pitty videos about being music-discriminated against b) just one look at the club and owner tells me that he was trying to spin dnb at a place that'd be tapped out for tolerance at anything much more deep than electro-house and probably was playing top 40 and US hip-hop if it wasn't D Ramirez. Point being - if it looks like the local dive or booty-grind for locals to get drunk and laid you can't clear a dance floor and make them lose all their money faster than to play something even remotely intelligent. That last point is to say don't even punish yourself to try playing a 'my dick in a box' venue because that's all you'd be doing, innovating new ways to beat yourself up for not being Timbaland, T-Pain, or Skrillex in your tastes. If you really enjoy dnb and enjoy what you're doing - find the right venue or make it for fugsake!

The problem are the girls that just don't understand complex'er music than simple 1/4 house/techno drumlines... They always complain like: how i'm a going to dance to it... Who cares...its music not a "so you think you dance" competition... Most girls that dig dnb are the ones that have brains in my experience!
