Hello, Steve. Just so you know. The bell pattern that you are playing is not called the Cascara but the bembe. Just so you don't mix up the 2 patterns. Greetings from a fellow drummer. grtz

What is more helpful that "da da, etc." is the beat and what to hit and when. For example, 6/8 as you mentioned. So Right Hand (RH) on 1 2 and then on 3 3& and then 4 and 4&. Again, this is just an example. Hope this makes sense. Vince

Vincent O'Rourke the notation covers that. Sometimes it’s best to feel rather than count every subdivision. Not always, but inthis case I chose to present it this way. Not everyone who follows these videos understand counting and or notation. What you dub as “more helpful” depends on the audience. I could explain this groove at the level of a masters thesis but this is a short tutorial that gets to the point. Thanks for chiming in.
