Holly... I can see why it’s your favorite video. Hands down, this must be the best drum notation video ever made! I wish I saw it when I just started learning reading notes, absolutely epic introduction. The graphics and the way you talked about it is absolutely sick! I agree with points you made there 100%. I started learning drums half a year ago and reading was one of the first things Í’ve decided that I want to learn. It’s actually suprisingly easy to get into and the payoff in learning has been immense! I’m still an absolute beginner, but being able to read and also write my own charts is super handy for learning both drum patterns (grooves/fills) and whole songs. Also, gonna make everyone in band watch this, because people get confused everytime I mention “bars”. :D Very underrated channel, keep pumping this gold quality content, man!

Yeah man.... So many time to explain and do it a fun way. I had checked to Stephen Clarks(A.K.A "The Non Glamorous Drummer") video on Drum Notations . Folk who might have trouble understanding this video slow check out his video too. ...But coming to Brendan's video ,woh this information and animation were freaking nuts. I loved the video man. Crisp and sound answers no beating around the bush! . He must have had insane amounts of retakes (or atleast I would ,if I was recording 😅😅). Great job Brendan😎😎.

Wow, nice result. This piece probably took forever to edit, but it definitely helps keeping the attention of the viewer, as well as making learning fun. It is proven that knowledge obtained through playful means trains the brain in the long run to associate learning with positive emotions, and makes the brain want to learn new things there where there is fun. Which means you have just got yourself another returning customer. Time you put in this video is time well spent. I am 49y old, and recently I started playing drums in a band, for the first time in my life. Never played drums in a band before, mostly did the singing or bass. Now, I have to learn all there is to be learned about drums from scratch. After a couple of rehearsals, I realized that my brain at my age is not too eager about remembering grooves and parts of songs to the letter even after hours and hours of listening to the same song. So, I realized I have to learn how to make myself some drumming cheat sheets. I'm so glad I bumped into your channel. I've also seen the other video you made about transcribing songs quickly when there is not a lot of time given to absorb a set list of 20 or 30 songs overnight. Loved the video. But the sample song you picked was very simple. Do you have a video that builds on that one and also shows a way to write down songs that are a bit more complex?

As a French speaker, I notice how some terms in English are straight forward and mathematical whereas we are very visual. Just some examples: Whole note = Ronde (Round) Half note = Blanche (White) Quarter note = Noire (Black) Eighth note = Croche (Hook) Sixteenth note = Double croche (Double hook)

As someone who has read music notation since I was 9, I can honestly say this video is absolutely brilliant, and should be shown in schools. I have never had to read drum notation and I am trying to learn drum notation... as in, how do you notate a roll, what the heck is a flam and how is it used... that sort of thing... but I subbed when he put up the repeat symbol as he repeated himself... good stuff.

The video is really good. I've tried to learn drum notes for years, but I can't seem to get it in my head, just because there's too much to process. I have managed to learn drum notes in its absolute most simple form. Quarter notes, eight notes, triplets, and so on. I've also learned the most basic 4/4 grove, with some embelishments of each voice. (Kick, tom, snare, hihat, crash) But after that there's too much going on. Too many signs intergrated with note values, time signatures and diffrent ways of writing it, it's no use. I can't really get anything out of it. But if I hear it, I still might be able to play it, if it isn't above my level. Having that said, I can see why reading notes can help a drummer grow and expand skill level. For me, I have to keep all in my head, remembering every thing I have to play. I wish I had some system to write down for remembrance. But next time I look at any self made note I've made, I can't remember what I meant..

I recently decided after years of playing to start learning music notation. I avoided it over the years because I didn’t understand it and wanted to channel all my energy into having fun on the kit. I wish I had done this earlier, but better late than never. It’s opened up a new world to me. You’re analogy with reading and writing being the foundation to learning about endless topics is spot-on. I feel like I’m starting to understand far more about subdivisions and syncopation and other aspects that I kind of had a feeling for before, but just didn’t truly understand and couldn’t communicate. It’s also helping me understand what other drummers are doing when I listen to recordings. This a great video, and lots of fun. I really appreciate your creativity and editing skills on top of the educational content. You have a new subscriber.
