@@AndrewRooneyDrums They were on Mtv . Alot ... The Mr. Krinkle , My name is Mud, and Wynona's Big Brown Beaver videos were played quite often. they actually had a few more i cant think of at the moment. And 10 years later VH1 was playing them too! Wynonas BBB still plays on rock stations in the US as part of their normal rotation
I saw Les Claypool do an interview in which he explained their songwriting process. In a nutshell, the just jam out the music and then Les just writes some words to go with the music. I believe the words were "we try not to think about it too hard".
Not too sure about that, Les was probably playing it down a little. Some of the lyrics obviously had more thought than not trying to hard. eg; On the Coattails of a Dead man
Tim Alexander is a genius, he is a slightly twisted version of Neil Peart. As a matter of fact, Primus are huge fans of Rush, they have been playing “A Farewell to Kings” as a tribute while on tour recently.
"It's not the kind of band that's gonna be on MTV or anything" Well, not now since MTV doesn't play music anymore but they were definitely on MTV back in the day, in fact this song has a video. They were pretty big. Maybe not Nirvana big but well known. I went to one of their New Years concerts...it filled an arena and Tool was a supporting act.
Les Claypool's bass is So Heavy on this track.. Jerry was a Racecar Driver has always been one of my favorite tracks from Primus.. Mr.Claypool is a Bass Guitar Legend No Doubt..
Another great drum song by primus is pudding time, eleven and over the electric grapevine. But let's be real, every primus song has ridiculously impressive drums.
This song actually had a video that played on MTV. In fact it was their most well-known song thanks to that video, before Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver came out. Also as a side note, before joining Primus their guitar player was in a death metal band.
Tim Alexander was my reason for learnig the drums! This song was definitely not his showcase but great tune anyways. Crystal Mountain by Death - Gene Hoglan would be a good song to check out
Wow.. a real snare sound. Unlike this beat mapped plugin horror we have today. Throw in triggers from mid 90s and every drummer sounds very similar these days.
Great assessment of this band. I concur on all points. I saw them play a long, long time ago and I was very impressed, especially with the bass playing. I left the show wondering WTF was that all about? Decades later I'm still wondering ;-)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums their new tour they play through one of Rush's albums. Check out a live performance on youtube if a fan of Rush. It's pretty amazing
5:03 - If you are confused about that saying, it's from the American South. It basically means someone is going to do something because that's what they do. A dog is going to hunt because that's what dogs do. In this case a race car driver is going to race or do stupid risk things.
Great song. Need deeper analysis. This is some unique work mate! Serms some people miss the subtle high level work Tim does that makes him unique and that no other drummer does quite the same.. For example the bass drum notes here are spurt in beats like a car engine ,to mimic the theme of song.
Sure Primus can be tongue-in-cheek but there is a serious side as well, eg; American Life, On the Coattails of a Dead man (is about Courtney Love) and Lacquer Head to name a few.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I just love and am passionate about great music, including discovering, as well as helping others discover something they may not have otherwise. 👍 that’s why I am hooked on videos such as yours. Keep up the good work my friend
So heres the thing with primus, they get a lot of flack for "not taking themselves seriously", being a "goofy band", a "joke band" and all sorts of things like that. In reality, they touch on a lot of dark and or political topics during their first three albums especially. too many puppies touches on young men being involved in war, american life touches on american society as a whole with immigration, poverty and veterans, my name is mud touches on murder, bob touches on suicide, nature boy touches on insecurity, and various other serious topics and opinions are shared through their music. I think with the more joke type songs like jerry was a racecar driver and wynonnas big brown beaver, its les claypools way of bringing his odd creative vision and his so-cal upbringing into one piece of music. Certainly a misunderstood band.
RU-vid threw this up on my homepage. I want my time back. The best you can say, the sum total of your content when critiquing Primus is “that sounds so 90s!” And “these guys are great players”? Was this worth a video???
I've actually seen Korn open for primus in the famous Dutch club "Paradiso" in '95. I'd already seen Primus once, so I knew what was coming, but Korn gave me a similar WTF surprise with their unique sound. Quite like their original drummer's style as well.
Funny you said it sounds like korn, David Silveria is a huge Tim "herb" fan and I find his drumming on korns first 3 albums to be very like Primus! Good video sir, keep them coming!
My intro to Primus, other than South Park and this song, was actually John The Fisherman, which has a more classic structure, but I just LOVE the riffs and the bass play. Nice job 👍
TIM ALEXANDER - CHICAGO DRUM CLINIC This is the BEST AND DEFINITIVE video of him playing. Filmed close(and fairly well) and solo drum work. Full songs. Watch "Ten Gates Back" and "Eleven" Minutes 10:47 - 19:33 If you only have 5 minutes watch minutes 13:00 through 18:00 I want to see your face MELT. I'll put $50 on your patreon just to make this video. CHEERS! Love your vids.
I recently started listening to Primus and they really blew me away, such a MASSIVE sound. I only remember one single from the time of release. You had it right, all three are virtuoso performers in their own right, super talented IMO and definitely pretty weird. Thanks for sharing.
