I'm so glad that you got Art Blakey and Elvin Jones! I think that they are among some of the more heavy handed drummers in Jazz, I love it! I didn't see anyone else mention it but that is Lee Morgan. Cheers!

you're so right about Wynton Marsalis. Ken Burns decision to use him as the main authority for his Jazz documentary is the reason they dedicated 9 hours to to the first 70 years and 45 minutes on the last 60 🤦‍♂️

I think there's a youtube video out there of Chicago doing the percussion thang as a lead-in to "I'm A Man" back in 1970. This is one of my favorite versions of the Messengers. Benny Golson (sax) was a monster and master composer/arranger. Of course, Lee Morgan is my favorite trumpet player of all time. What a badass! Btw, a lot of people used to call that roll that Blakey became famous for a "press roll". Thanks for doing all these jazz vids!

One of my all time Favourite modern Jazz Fusiony type bands are the Aristocrats! Their veirson of Bad Asteroid (written by the guitarist Guthrie Govan) off their "Boing We'll Do it Live" DVD always puts a smile on my face.

I'm not a drummer but I really enjoy your videos. I think I've seen them all at this point. And I completely agree about modern jazz. The musicians are excellent, way better than I'll ever be, but the music is almost like a museum piece instead of something full of life.

It's good to see that no one gave a stupid dislike to the video. In the coming age of automation and coding I think a little bit of "Feel" should be there. Don't get me wrong ,music schools should teach their students to write and learn musical notation,but strictly sticking to that is a little too much 🙋. (Trinity College Grade 4 Candidate confession journals) (Ha) Anyways great video as always Steve.

Great review, Art Blakey was the the drummer that got me into Jazz. I do think in my opinion that you are selling some newer bands short, like Vijay Iyer, Sons of Kemet, Nate Smith's bands, Chris Potter, Joel Ross. Drummers Greg Hutchinson, Nate Smith, Jeremey Dutton, Lewis Nash, Eric Harland, etc. I agree with the bad Plus and Dave Holland. Anyhow, music is subjective and I do enjoy your take on this. By the way I will have to check out Medeski Martin and Wood. Thanks for the suggestion.

You are on point with much current jazz being codified and academic. Now consider Art Blakey...he was an orphan who worked in the coal mines around Pittsburgh as a mere teenager. He played piano in the gin joints and switched to drums because Errol Gardner took his spot. Art literally played for his supper. He drummed in all situations (I sure he backed a strip tease on a few occasions). All that gave him his soul which oozes out of his playing. He had more soul in one hit of his ride pattern than most jazz bands of today have with their hard bop. interpretations. It should be added that Art was way into heroin at the time of this clip. Not a good thing but it was all part of his struggle that made him the player he was.

Oh Now you're talking Art Blakey! those turn arounds on the 2's and 3's and dropping back then pulling it up, yes, that's the shit! i am with you on the emotional input to the art. Bop was an expression of rebellion. I think it was said of one guy - he would not have played a note if he could have gone out and punched the first ten white men he saw. You have to appreciate Bop was to upset and sonically assault the world in a land of apartheid. I appreciate your enthusiasm. Thanks great video.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but Ginger Baker loved jazz and fancied himself a jazz drummer. He eventually became friends with several of them (including Blakey and Roach). Here's the drum duo/battle he did with Art back in 1973: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qghrsBfSbgk.html

Joe Morello is My Favorite in this Genre of music.
@drummer78
@drummer78 4 года назад
AlbertDOnofrio Morello was a great drummer but he really played that West Coast “cool jazz” style. Blakey is bluesy hard bop. It’s all jazz but the sub genres did identify at least an approach. Therefore, I think both Blakey and Morello inhabit the same world of music but are at two different poles.
@RoryVanucchi

How about Joe Morello? Danny Seraphine? Gene Krupa? Joe Jones? Ginger baker? or Ron Wilson famous solo on wipe out? Good stuff you are doing

Bro Miles was the biggest name in the music but everyone was not playing like him! His style was introverted. Players like Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd who were the up and coming at this time were influenced by the great Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro!
