Drum Teacher Reacts to Carter Beauford - Drum Solo 

Carter Beauford is a criminally underrated drummer. One of the absolute best. I love his drumming on the song Squirm from the Big Whiskey album

Can we all pause for just a moment and recognize how insanely perfect his bass drums sound?

Pretty sure Carter is ambidextrous. Amazing either way. Dave Matthews Band is easily one of the best touring bands today and of all-time.

FACT: Carter is NOT left handed or ambidextrous. He started as simply a right handed drummer but taught himself and used the open handed technique. Not being difficult and no disrespect in saying this. Just pointing it out.I worked as a Valet at The Ritz Carlton for a few years and DMB stayed there during a show one year. I was a HUGE Carter fanatic and so when I got to meet him that was the first thing I asked him. "Are you left handed" and he told me that he was not left handed or ambidextrous and taught himself from the beginning to play open handed. That is why his bass drum is still on the right of his kit. Most lefties just switch the kit. That's straight form the Genius himself people! It just takes practice and dedication!

I've seen them 42 times, and have more live bootlegs than I could ever count, and I am still blown away every time I hear them play. This is a prime example of a band that I don’t love, but I listen to, enjoy and have even seen live, all because their drummer is THAT good. The entire band is super talented, but from a drummers point of view, Carter is someone who’s playing really jumps out and inspires. He intuitively knows when to play his role and lays back deep in the pocket, shines with sophisticated grooves and when it’s called for, just explodes on fills that are complex, but sooo tasty!1.

.......and he can do all that while blowing bubbles with his gum. Coolest drummer ever ❤️

And this is why, from the time I first heard the DMB so many years ago, I have been absolutely obsessed with Carter’s drumming. 😎🥳👏 It makes me wish I had originally learned to play open handed, it affords so much more freedom.

Drive in drive out is a treat for drummers

This is not really Carter's solo, per se. It's the intro to a song from the Crash album titled, " Say Goodbye ", but of course extended into a solo...of sorts. The studio version also has the accompanying flute. It was cut off in the video you watched just as the song was starting in earnest where all the instruments come in. A great song BTW.

Carter is not left handed, he is ambidextrous. He plays open handed not left handed, huge difference. If you know anything about one of the greatest drummers on the planet, he plays open because as a child he would watch Buddy Rich on TV and try to mirror what Buddy was playing. He will play with his sticks crossed at times as well depending on the song.

did you notice that the guy (jeff coffin) playing the flute looks kinda of like garey !!!!!!! garey and jeff are both TALENTED and enthusiastic!!!!!!!! jeff coffin could be garey's long lost brother!!!!!!!!!!

I was watching a DMB video yesterday, and thought wow Garey should do a Carter Beauford solo video. And here it is! :-)

He’s right handed, plays open handed, and is just a monster of syncopation. He’s said himself that he only plays open handed because he mimicked what he saw from an opposite POV.

Have you done any videos reacting to drummer El Estapario Siberiano, you have to check him out, he can play faster with one hand than most drummers can play with both hands

If I'm not mistaking, Carter explained he is right handed but when starting to learn to play drums he set it up the way he saw it from the front which led him to setting it up in a left handed fashion. After learning how to setup for a right handed drummer he decided to keep his open arm playing style and add the cross style and play in a left hand and right handed style. As well there is another vid of him doing this solo earlier in the dave Mathews timeline and that version is way better and blows my mind. This was good but the flute or whatever dude really didn't help.

The problem with Carter is if you ever went and saw them live he dominated every single song. He couldn't help it. But it did get fatiguing for me as a listener.

Carter has said that he isn't necessary a soloist. I actually think it is one of his weaknesses if it could be called a weakness. I find solos drum solos a bit overrated.
