Respect to you both awesome dads, my dad raised me with Slayer and other music of similar genres (Hendrix, Aerosmith, the Doors, Metallica, GnR, Audioslave, Pearl Jam etc). I will always love him for it and I will be passing the music on to my kids when I have them, I'm 24 now so I'm thankful for not being into Bruno Mars etc.

I started playing when I was 12, acdc , guns n roses , Europe and other stuff like that, then at 13 I went to learning iron maiden, then the slower megadeth tunes , at 14 I discovered anthrax then close to my 15th birthday I found the south of heaven album, I practiced to every song on that album until I had them nailed down, then spent the next 6 months solid learning the reign in blood album and seasons in the abyss until I could play along with any of those album's, At the time I didn't understand how much of an achievement that was , Then when I was 16 some 19 and 20 yr old dudes who were in a band asked me to come and play with them in their practice room one day, By the end of that day I was in a death metal band and a hard thrash band, I'm now 44 yrs old and I play between 10 and 15 slayer songs every week because I love dave Lombardos drumming, and the fact that learning that opened so many doors up for me.

The mosh pit part is usually the most effective when you have the tension/release relationship in the music. The ultra speedy parts with little melody provide tension. The music slows and gets melodic....then goes into a slightly faster but still melodic riff. THATS when the mosh part is the most effective. It’s like an adrenaline booster.

LOVE Dave Lombardo! I've seen Slayer live 14 times since 1984, eyes & ears always gravitate towards Dave's awesomeness! As I grew musically, I came to appreciate his efficiency, he lets the sticks and pedals do the work, as well as the mics. Looking at his ride hand, it's like that "spoon bend" game, you wobble a spoon fast, holding it lightly in the middle. He's moving his hand slightly up and down through the fast phrases, almost looks like the stick is pivoting past his fingers. And that double kick! He's barely moving! Fucking unbelievable. All hail Lombardo! Funny, he and Vinny Appice are my fave metal drummers. Two perfect opposites. Nobody plays 60bpm like Vinny.

Dave has achieved the American Dream as his parents came from Cuba-hats' off to him. In interviews he's a totally down to earth normal dude. The entire album 'Reign In Blood' is about an hour and a half of music compressed into 30 minutes of a non-stop assault that'll melt your face off. 'Angel of Death' and 'Reign In Blood' blew me out of the water whenever I very first heard them. I totally agree with you in that Slayer, the Kings of Thrash knew a little 'airing' out slightly 'normal' speed section in the song sets the bar even higher for whenever they kick the afterburners on again.

Listen to the bass drums , NO TRIGGERS ! to many modern metal drummers think you must have triggers if you play fast double bass because you won't be able to hear the bass drums if you play fast, I've never heard anything so stupid, I play extremely fast stuff and I actually pride myself on not using triggers, Set your pedals up correctly, use wood or plastic beaters ,choose the correct drum heads and a high quality click pad with strong adhesive so it stays on the drum , You will be heard ,locally I'm the "double bass guy " and a lot of people have had lessons from me or asked how its done, Passion and love for the music you are playing and the proper gear is what you need.

I play and have played in multiple black/ death metal bands, I would never say anyone needs triggers. I don’t think its a good idea when people set up there pedals to allow them to play with a shorter stroke to reach higher speeds. HOWEVER it does help a lot in a live setting with getting the sound I want. Most venues are too boomy and the house kits are often not set up to sound the way I like. Using triggers helps my bandmates hear the kick drum, which allows all of us to stay tighter, and gives is the sound that we wish to achieve. I don’t practice or rehearse with triggers but I do use them at gigs for this reason. They are very useful tools, but they shouldn’t be used as a crutch.

Very astute view and feedback, sir! I viewed this particular video on my own a while back. Love the backstage drummer nerd-on of love going on! And best of all, Dave looks back at the entourage after the song ends and asks with a smile, 'did we do okay?' LOVE IT! YES! 1980s was the era of bands and artists under assault. From Slayer to John Denver, Twisted Sister and Frank Zappa all appeared in court in defense of the then-new Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) slicing, dicing and dissecting interpretations of lyrics. Those "trials" lead to agreement from those eyewitnesses that sure, posting explicit lyrics warning stickers was a reasonable compromise to alert parents of what their kids might be getting into, without censoring the art itself. So there's that history about THAT, for musicians under 40! I am more or less around your generation at 48, indoctrinated to the metal world in mid-late 1980s/ early 1990s. Went from listening to family members' music (funk, big band, classic country and folk) to Michael Jackson, then Cyndi Lauper to Hendrix and then onto old Van Halen into Metallica, Slayer and then Sepultura! I was somewhat of a late arrival in a sense, catching bands after they already broke up. My ongoing favorite is Voivod because they're so NOT to be confused with any other band! Other very heavy faves: Gojira, Behemoth, Mastodon. Blast beasts: IMO the quintessential introduction to blast beats can be best defined in Napalm Death's 'Suffer the Children'. Dunno if they were the first, but that's where I first heard this style. I am pretty sure they helped define that term.

Love to see a drummer analyzing drummers on here! It's fun! Ever think of doing Darren King from Mutemath? Either Reset or Break the Same (both live versions of course) would be awesome!

I think Frost is one of the best drummers out there today. Definitely the all-star of the Black Metal scene.. his work with the Norwegian band "1349" is just off the charts phenomenal! Particularly so, there's a drum cam video for the song "Atomic Chapel", highly recommend checking that one out.

If everything is always fast then it loses the speed within itself if that makes sense. But when you slow it down for a minute and kick it back in. My god

Dave Lombardo Was The Shit. They Had The formula for Super Heavy Metal Success. I Did This for Years Way Back in 1980 and It Takes Real Work!! I Had Super Fast Feet Way Before having any kind of time track. I Went Up In My Bedroom Which Just happened to have Huge Drum Kit. I Spent Thousands of Hours Enjoying My Craft and I Was Super Successful. Then the 90's hit and I had to play Boom Tap. Blues etc. then the 200's hit and well...You Know..

Extra speed advice. Even if you are already fairly fast, slow down and work back up to ensure that your technique allows you to hit the 280bpm plus levels. I was around 230 comfortably blasting and kicking, but I struggled above that. I went down to 90 and was into individual beats and working on one hand at a time at first and massively paying attention to my technique, sticking, the way I held the sticks, where I held the sticks, how I used my fingers to develop the speed etc. I think you can only really see your technique in detail when you are ultra slow. I kept going back to and starting at 90 and working up in 10bpm incriments at every practice session and watching a reflection of my technique. If I felt bad and it wasn't working, back to 90 and assess things. Quickly I was 100% better across the board with other things like rudiments and stuff and single strokes and blasting was upto a comfortbale 280bpm and going beyond. Thats my story and I hope it helps atleast one person!!!

For live shows I always thought the best warm up on guitar came from hanging out with the drummers. Death/black metal drummers all were working out with the metronome set to 240bpm or higher :) It's true that you just gotta keep grinding on those metronome workouts and the speed will come.

My mom smashed Dad's Steppenwolf record because it said "God damn the pusher." She pitched shit when she found out Dungeons and Dragons was going to make us kill ourselves... But regarding the drums: that strobe lighting seems like it would be a hell of a distraction to overcome like a visual metronome running at a slightly different tempo.

Hilarious Slayer story. That guy was definitely doing the Lord's work. Probably turned tons of kids onto metal. The great thing about Lombardo is that, no matter how fast he's playing, there are always little nuances and dynamics that make it feel great. Personally, I'm convinced that his exposure to Cuban music as a kid was crucial for his feel.
