He’s left handed playing classic grip with reverse hands my world all makes sense now! I studied his playing on Vulcan worlds return to forever and there’s a part midway where he does this constipated flam triplet thing from the floor Tom through the rack toms. I thought It was so cool and different I mastered it and used it all over the place. Now I know why de did it. Left hand on right handed set with classic stick reversed as a lefty or using matched grip off and on. It all makes sense now. He is a great drummer.
Back in the RTF days they actually had an address on the back of their albums where you can communicate with them. As an eighteen year old drummer I sent him a cassette tape of my playing. He sent the tape back after he talked on it and said what he thought was good and what needed work. Such a great guy and great drummer of course.
I saw him with Return to Forever a decade ago. One of the best shows I've seen. Most of my attention was taken up by Stanley Clarke, as I remember it. Zappa Plays Zappa opened, and I was not prepared for how authentic they would be. I felt like I was in a video of an old Frank tape.
Hello Gary!! I love your videos man, you certainly take the time to break all down, as an amateur drummer I find this very helpful and obviously you know what you are talking about. I would also like to make a request: Lee Pearson (Spyro Gyra/Chris Botti) the great drum solo. Hope you find it interesting and refreshing. Greetings from Mexico!!
Lenny White has been one of my favorite drummers since the hey day of RTF back when I was in high school. Just a great sound. Maybe there's something about left-handed drummers who play right-handed kits (like Ringo).
You should react to Felix Lerhmann, a great left-handed drummer from Germany. There are plenty of great drum solo videos on RU-vid, very groovy cat! Would love to see your reaction!
React to keep yourself alive live Hammersmith odeon 1975 by Queen, there’s a drum solo in the song that Roger does and would be interesting to see you analyse it✌️✌️
WAY COOL!! Love Lenny White! Left handed drummer on a right handed kit... such a different sound and quite unique (i.e. Ringo Starr and Simon Phillips to name a few). I've seen Lenny w/Return to Forever (on a reunion tour in the early 2000s) and he played open handed with match grip. First time I've seen him play with a traditional grip (left handed).
I saw that tour also, and 3 times in Philly in early 70s. One of the greatest at his craft ever! I also saw Billy several times, they both are mind blowing musicians, Those were the days!
I'm not a drummer, but,I'm a lefty that plays a righty guitar, so I can relate. I'm nothing special, but some lefties that play right are Steve Morse, Mark Knopfler, Duane Allman, Gary Moore, etc.
