Hello everyone! Today we're getting into the Christmas spirit and once again taking a look at one of the groups who I consider to be synonymous with the holiday spirit in Pentatonix! In this video, we'll be taking a look at one of their earlier Christmas pieces but one that I consider to be top notch Christmas music in the form of Carol of the Bells. This piece has actually been one of my favorite pieces for as long as I can remember and I'm actually super excited to see what PTX has gone and done with it!

For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! I'll also do my best to convey and educate on the things that pop out to me so that we can all appreciate the artist and what they are doing! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short RU-vid video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!

This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!

They are lip syncing to themselves for the video! You can do a lot in the studio to make it seem like you never breath! 🤣 If you watch some of their “making of” videos you will realize that they always lip sync. Makes sense. With the amount of takes you would have to do, you would loose your voice!

@@magslee6288 definitely untrue, it really depends on the performance and most of the ones i've seen has mitch at least leaving out a few notes to stabilize himself

It’s triple meter, but it’s actually in 6/8. The easy way to realize this can be found in the text. The second part of the arrangement is filled with canonic entrances -almost a fugue! Amazing!

I thought this as well. All the sheet music I can find, though is written in 3/4. The fugal section is my favourite part. Shows their creativity.

Theres an interview with Avi and Kevin where Avi said the wonderful thing about Kevin was that he was such a serious and intelligent musician on top of being a great beatboxer.

Thank you for reacting to this awesome Pentatonix video. Glad that you liked it. When I first saw this I was amazed at how long Mitch could sing without taking a breath. Now, I'm still amazed but I realize that it was just Mitch being Mitch. They are all incredible. The harmonies are beautiful.

It is very contrapuntal. They are really clever. They take very mundane musical compositions and elevate them to very colourful, very intelligent works of art. I am fascinated by them. I love Bach - and this piece reminds me of that sort of counterpoint with very clever harmonies. Well done Pentatonix!

Nice reaction, especially the exploration of Kevin's range of percussion tools. Whenever you think about PTX arrangements, it's worth remembering their near-invisible "sixth member," arranger Ben Bram.

This song was a nod to the background they all had in high school and college choirs. Avi in particular was an opera/classical major in college (and had been offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera when he was approached to join PTX for The Sing Off), performing with a few groups there, including their chamber choir. He was also a theory/composition/arranging minor, which came in very handy in arranging pieces like this, with that madrigal approach.

I'm so glad you did this one. I love it, and it often gets overlooked. This kind of arrangement is SO hard, particularly the "instrumental" sections. Anyone who's sung choral stuff, even if not acapella, knows what I'm talking about. Yes! Counterpoint! Like madrigals. That's exactly what I'm talking about.

That’s the performance that solidified my belief that Mitch is an alien since he doesn’t appear to breathe at all while singing for at least 30 seconds or so. 🤯

Yeah, when you have multiple voices at once, there are four basic categories of things they can be doing. 1. They can sing in parallel, all going up or down by the same number of half-steps together at the same time. Typically parallel voices are separated by octaves, but you can also have a voice going in parallel that's raised by some other amount, e.g., a perfect fifth. Of course if they're not separated at all, that's called "unison". 2. They can sing independently, each doing something different. This is called "polyphony" and was a quite common technique in the late Medieval and early Renaissance periods. 3. They can be interdependent, interacting in ways that create interesting patterns. This is called "counterpoint" and was the dominant technique during the Baroque period. The simplest form of counterpoint and probably the most common today, is the round ("rondo" if you want to be pretentious); but counterpoint can be much more elaborate than that. The "canon" is a particularly strictly-structured form of counterpoint, and the "fugue" is a very famous and very complex form of counterpoint, but the general principle that makes it counterpoint is that motions of the various voices interact in an interesting way. 4. One voice can lead with a melody and the others can supply notes that combine with the melody notes to create a desired sound (typically to sound good, but dissonant sounds can also be created), on a note-by-note basis, forming chords (which may be arranged into a progression; some chords in the progression may be chosen with more dissonance to create a tension, which can then be "resolved" when subsequent chords are less dissonant, and so on). This is called "harmony" (or sometimes, in historical contexts, "monody") and has been the dominant technique since the middle of the eighteenth century. Note that the composer may or may not write the melody first; in some cases the composer starts with a bass line or even with a chord progression, and then writes a melody and additional harmony to fit. This is still "harmony" because there's exactly one melody line (at a given time) and the other notes are forming chords to support it. Of course, an individual song can have more than one of these techniques in it, and I think this one has all four.

This and Little Drmmer Boy are two of my least favorite carols.......until PTX worked their magic. If you haven't yet, you should hear what they do with O Come All Ye Faithful.

Carol of the Bells has always been one of my favorite carols, but I felt the same about Little Drummer Boy - never really liked it until I heard PTX version

100% on Little Drummer Boy, but I randomnly heard PTX version this past season and I love it! They manage to do it without it becoming the same repetitive phrasing and keep it interesting and of course beautiful (:

If you want to see and hear Kevin speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, there is a video of PTX in 2011 shortly after winning "The Sing-Off" appearing as guests on the Chinese version of the same show. It begins with the Chinese host speaking English with everyone in the dark about Kevin's skill in fluent Chinese. When the host asks the group how they like China, Kevin responds in perfect Chinese and blows everyone away. Check out the video when you get a chance; it's hilarious.

Listen to The Prayer. Kevin kicks a$$ in it. Along with the others, but hearing Kevin's contributions really sounded fabulous. For a long time I was more focused on the singing and harmonies without giving Kevin his due. Now I've been really listening to Kevin and he is AMAZING.

I'll never forget them performing this piece live on "The Talk" back in about 2012, and it sounds exactly like this production version. Everyone on the show was blown completely away by the performance. I will always be amazed that these five humans can produce this much sound at the same time in perfect harmony totally without instruments. Just phenomenal.

I am not sure of you are familiar with Voiceplay, but they are another acapella group with an amazing bass and vocal percussionists as well as crazy arrangements and harmonies. I think you would really enjoy their cover of the Halo Theme.
