Learn the tom-layering technique used by Stewart Copeland in the classic hit Message in a Bottle.
Leading into the first chorus, Copeland plays a traditional, driving, up-rock beat but adds a little flavor to it with the toms. On beats "& 3" of each measure, a tom pattern is layered over the base groove. You can translate this technique to any groove you might already play. Try throwing in a tom pattern when your snare stick isn't playing.

Great lesson. Interesting ergonomic setup. Copeland probably puts his toms away from his snare because his arms are so long.

Another great lesson Nate! I've really enjoyed your Foo Fighters drum covers but I would love to see a full cover of Message in a Bottle from you. There are quit a few on RU-vid. Some get close to the original (tricky I know, given that some bits are over dubbed) but I think you would absolutely nail it!! Any chance?!

Do you "THINK" Copeland plays ANY song exactly the same (as per the sheet music) everytime he play the song ? Stewart is NOT your typical western type drummer. Stewart plays more by instinct just the way West indians, Cubans, Jamaicans , Haitians play. I find it HYSTERICAL there is a music sheet for "Message in a bottle" . Just as Ginger Baker , Copeland never plays a song exactly the same twice.

Of course... but you gotta start somewhere if you want to learn to cover the groove. What else would you start with except for a basic transcription of the studio track? No one says you have to play it that way every time. I really don't understand why people complain about this. You don't start out with the pure instincts of Stewart Copeland.
