If drum terminology applied to videography I’d say your videos are in the pocket. But it doesn’t ... so I’ll just say thanks for sharing this interesting and inspiring video. Loved your two licks in the non-linear example, first when you changed from hi-hat to ride (4:10) and at the end of the groove (4:17) ... That’s what I’m talking about. Awesome! 👊🏻🖖🏻
It is really tricky! Sometimes I believe my pocket SUCKS!! But you just gotta keep working on it. I think it comes naturally after practicing time keeping for a long time.
nice stuff, thanks for posting this video, I am going to use the half time transition and that "disco" feel beat to practice this weekend. I am building up a bit of grooves to make re-learning the drums again fun. which is easy since I don't have any requirements, deadlines or homework. I love being self taught now. Compared to high school 30 years ago anyway lol
I sure am a n00b, and I’ve never really understood what linear drumming stood for and now I do! Thank you CJ! Great information and you do it in such a funny, down-to-earth way too 😃😃
sounds good to me. I watched this guy, Larnell Lewis couple months back & he showed some stuff to and what a "Back Beat" is. Hitting the snare twice. I kept hearing about it, but didn't know what it was. Then I stumbled across his video. young guy, about your age. some ppl. don't explain things right and we give up for a little while and bam. @@ThatSwedishDrummer
@@ThatSwedishDrummer Cheers mate. I wish u could come spend about a month with me and us hang out and you can help me get in the groove. You seem like a nice person. Keep on doing your videos and keep playing the drums. I'm glad to know you all the way from Durham NC USA! Peace and Unity for all.

Great video! Would LOVE for you to analyse Swedish drummer Aron Mellergårdh’s playing with the band Dirty Loops, especially in their song “Work Shit Out”, featuring a dope drum solo by Aron… 🔥 Thanks 🙏 And oh yeah, subbed 👍
Hello Mr. CJ, I really appreciate your drumming lessons! Maybe you could upgrade your drum learning with my innovation that presents a slightly different drumming and a slightly different sound. I would like to get in touch with you Mr. CJ. Friendly greetings, BJ.
5:06 Hahaha, I'm a guitar player who is currently having to learn drums because I don't know anyone who owns, or even plays, drums. I'd have better luck forming a group of oboists.
I've definitely thought about doing a follow up on this video! But simply explained; If you're playing a 4/4 groove, the back beat is on beat 2 and 4 (where the snare drum plays). The bass drum is played on what's usually called the downbeat, and the snare plays on the backbeat.
A practice pad is indeed a good tool for practice. It's very portable, so you can bring it anywhere. And they're also very "low volume", so you don't have to worry about bothering anyone. For drum kit practice, it's not gonna be "enough", but it's a good start.
I don’t speak Spanish, so I can’t make subtitles in Spanish either. Hopefully RU-vid will expand the over-dub program they’ve been working on so the videos can be listened to in different languages ✌️
Hopefully it’s been taken care of. Just know that I only write back to people in the comments. I NEVER ask people to add me on any messaging-apps. Spread the word! Stay safe, buddy 🔥

In retrospect - I was wrong about that haha! I thought for a long time he was left handed, but he's just played open handed for such a long time. Apparently it helped him play his setup better.
@@ThatSwedishDrummer Yes. In fact Gavin Harrison interviewed him and he told the reason to play open-handed: the perspective and the drumming approach it arose. BTW: Love your sound!!
