Drums and bass both make up the backbone of music. Bassists are important!

I actually wonder this about other drummers, too. All the songs I know how to play, I learned just from listening and remembering. Sam is super good (and even learned Tamara’s amazing work to play in Conquer Divide), so I’d bet she started learning with a more formal approach!

Most drummers (at least in metal) learn by listening and there are quite a few out there who cannot even read notes at all. Personally I think learning a song from notes doesn't make much sense because you have to be able to play the song by heart anyway - at least when you are not in a classical orchestra or something. Notes are good for figuering out complex parts and can help a lot in your communication with fellow band mates though ;) Formal education or no - I think it is most important to start playing the drums in a way that makes it easy for you to stay motivated, because in the end the more you play and practise the better you get. And how drummers approach this can be completely different from person to person.
